Title: U.S. leaders knew we didn’t have to drop atomic bombs on Japan to win the war. We did it anyway

At a time when Americans are reassessing so many painful aspects of our nation’s past, it is an opportune moment to have an honest national conversation about our use of nuclear weapons on Japanese cities in August 1945. The fateful decision to inaugurate the nuclear age fundamentally changed the course of modern history, and it continues to threaten our survival. As the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock warns us, the world is now closer to nuclear annihilation than at any time since 1947.

The accepted wisdom in the United States for the last 75 years has been that dropping the bombs on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and on Nagasaki three days later was the only way to end the World War II without an invasion that would have cost hundreds of thousands of American and perhaps millions of Japanese lives. Not only did the bombs end the war, the logic goes, they did so in the most humane way possible.

We had to drop the atomic bombs if we didn't want millions of casualties on both sides in a prolonged war. The bomb ended it swiftly, and was the Right Thing To Do.

The Japanese were going to surrender anyway.

Every day that the war went on, 10000 more Chinese died under the Japanese occupation. The Japanese were the invaders, and as long as they stubbornly held on, thousands of innocent people were dying every day. There was NO REASON to let the Japanese keep their dignity. They were "going to surrender anyway"...WHEN? Let another ten days past, and as many innocent Chinese would have died than Japanese died at Hiroshima.

No.

The bombs broke the Japanese spirit and caused them to recoil in SUDDEN terror, and SUDDENLY surrender, at the Emperor's behest. They went from proud, arrogant, murderous bastards, ACTUALLY MURDERING 10,000 Chinese every day, to cringing beaten dogs on their knees begging for their own lives...which we magnanimously granted them. That war had to end RIGHT THEN. NOT when the Japanese finally decided to concede defeat.

They MAY have conceded defeat in October, when the invasion fleet was at the door. By then, another 600,000 Chinese would be dead.

No. Dropping the atomic bomb saved Chinese and American and other Allied lives. It even saved Japanese lives, by forcing the Emperor, in terror, to surrender right then and right there. That was the point. Surrender or it will be the shattering of jade. They did, and that was very, very good for everybody except for Japanese pride, and a handful of Japanese leaders, who were hanged as war criminals - which they WERE.

Any suggestion that Japan be allowed to surrender on its own, without the bombs, means giving Japan more TIME, and the Chinese did not have time. They were innocent. Every day it was prolonged, another 10,000 innocent Chinese died. Versus dropping the bomb and killing 100,000 guilty Japanese, and ending the damned thing in two days.

It was the morally right thing to do. The refusal to see that, and to admit the casual deaths inflicted by the Japanese on everybody they occupied, is either ignorance - you did not realize that there was a price paid for delay - or it is morally bankrupt, valuing Japanese lives OVER the lives of the innocent people they invaded, and the Americans who would have had to dig them out.

"Japan would have surrendered anyway"? WHEN? If it was later than two days, it is not nearly good enough. Sacrificing too many innocent lives to let the Japanese have time to preserve their wounded pride. FUCK Japanese pride. Nuke it.

"The Japanese were going to surrender anyway."

No evidence of that whatsoever, but plenty of evidence that the thoroughly-propagandized Japanese people would have fought to the death, and tens of thousands--at least--American soldiers would have died in the invasion. Truman made the right call...MUD

They would have fought to the death. And even WITHOUT American casualties in an eventual invasion, 10,000 of our allies, the Chinese, were being killed PER DAY. WHY give Japan "time"? The Chinese had no time. They were dying right then. The bomb caused immediate surrender, which ended the slaughter.

This whole hand wringing about dropping the bomb is immoral. It shows an utter lack of care for the deaths of the innocent people the Japanese were going to go right on slaughtering until they were defeated and ended the war. The bomb ended it in TWO DAYS, saving hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Chinese lives, and all those American lives that would have been lost in the invasion. I don't really care about the Japanese lives, frankly. Once the war was over, I care.

It's like the Germans. German whining about all of the deaths from bombing and Russian invasion? Waaa - waaa - waaa. And the British the Germans bombed? Or the Russians the Germans slaughtered?

Nope. You start a war, you are a criminal, and guess what, the lives of innocent people and cops are more valuable than the lives of criminals. That's the way it is, and it is CORRECT.
