Bombardier, which does work on rail cars, to lay off up to 140 workers Matthew Daneman Staff writer March 6, 2010
Bombardier Inc. this week notified workers at its Steuben County plant that as many as 140 of them could be laid off this year.
The layoffs are scheduled to start in June.
The Bath plant does rail car refurbishment. The layoffs come as two Bombardier contracts are set to expire later this year, said company spokeswoman Maryanne Roberts.
Those contracts are with Metro-North Railroad, which runs a commuter rail service from New York City into the Hudson Valley and Connecticut, and the Maryland Area Regional Commuter train service, Roberts said.
The Bath plant employs about 220 people.
The precise number of layoffs will depend on whether the company is able to land other rail car refurbishment work, Roberts said.
"We're always pursuing other contracts," she said.
Canadian multinational corporation Bombardier specializes in transportation equipment from commercial aircraft to trains.
Its rail car refurbishing operation had been located in Dansville, Livingston County, in the sprawling former Foster Wheeler plant there, before moving to Steuben County in early 2008.
