Downsizing deals - Cargill to close Memphis steel service plant Monday, 01 Mar 2010 EmailButton Pdf_button Cargill is closing its steel service center on Presidents Island in Memphis, affecting 12 full time jobs.
The workers at the Cargill Memphis Steel Service Center at 1495 Harbor were told about the closure earlier this week. The center custom cuts plate steel to be used by other industries, such as heavy equipment and automakers.
The company confirmed Memphis was one of two service centers that will be closed by April 30th 2010. The other is in East Chicago. Both closings will affect 35 employees total.
Mr David Feider spokesman of the company said that the closings were based on changing market and customer needs.
Cargill is highly diverse, with operations in agribusiness, food and industrial services. The company employs 159,000 people in 68 countries, and had revenues of USD 116 billion last year.
