Business news briefs: Whirlpool plant closing protested Compiled from reports by Free Press news services

MANUFACTURING Hundreds of sign-carrying protesters have gathered outside a Whirlpool plant in Evansville, Ind., to protest the company's plans to shutter the plant.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff's deputies shut down one lane of U.S.-41 Friday as the crowd gathered for a protest march from a nearby union hall to the factory.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka was expected to join the protesters, who carried signs reading "Save our jobs."

Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool announced in August that it would shut down the 1,100-worker refrigerator factory by mid-2010 and move production to Mexico.

Local union President Darrell Collins says corporate greed is behind the closure

And all made possible by NAFTA, NAU mandates negotiated by Poppy Bush's two sons.

This cannot be true. According to war, go65 and other shills, the economy is getting better, the recession is over, and manufacturing is up.

I'm just waiting for Obammy to turn water into gold . . .

Manuacturing is up...the manufacturers themselves say so...

The economy is getting better...that is a fact...will it be sustained? Personally, I have my doubts. If the economy continues to perform as it is then the recession IS over...

translation:

I predict the economy will get get better, unless it doesn't. Either way, I am right because I said absolutely nothing of substance while pretending otherwise. And everything good is President Urkel's doing, while everything bad is Bush's and Reagan's fault and Hoover's too.

Nope...I've stated what stands in the economy's way. But for the likes of you with the memory of a spastic ape here it is again:

1) Commercial loans: IF you get some REITS that go tits up it's game over and we hit 15% unemployment.

2) China and the other EM's that are growing like mad and supporting our export industry have any prolonged slow down or outright recession.

There are other issues but these are the two big ones...

I agree with the premise... REITS are very, very cash rich tho...

I don't recall ever saying that a growing economy meant that there would never be any job losses. Need I remind you that unemployment under Reagan grew from 7.6% to 9.7% during the early years of his presidency.

Being a Republican means you get to choose your own reality.

Sorry - I don't buy the notion that presidents have all that much to do with the jobless rates or the economy in general. But brain-dead partisans of both sides say that it does - and it does win elections for them.

Hell - you demwits ran against Hoover for 40 years at least. And the pugs have been running against Carter for years.

Whatever positive or negative influence a POTUS has is subjective. If anything, Reagan's optimism had a net positive effect on the economy. On the flip side, Carter's whiny demeanor and his "malaise" speech probably sunk him.

Carter's ratings went up after his "Crisis of Confidence" speech which was later tagged "malaise" by the media even tho he never used the word.

Which had nothing to with Reagan, or maybe it did depending on which moonbat argument you want to believe.

The recession then was mainly caused by the Fed tightening money to stem inflation, which Reagan supported and the moonbats jump on this bandwagon when saying the recession was all Raegan's fault. But when giving credit for curbing inflation, the moonbats say that had nothing to do with Reagan and was all the Fed.

Unemployment rose after he cut taxes, therefore, his tax cut was a failure, right?

I happen to agree.

Whatever positive or negative influence a POTUS has is subjective. If anything, Reagan's optimism had a net positive effect on the economy. On the flip side, Carter's whiny demeanor and his "malaise" speech probably sunk him.

Again, I happen to agree. But there are some things that a President can do to help, Clinton's 1993 budget for example went a long way to calming credit markets concerned over the growing deficit, thus easing liquidity. The stimulus has worked in that it restored some growth to the economy at a time when most people were retrenching.

But you are right, there are a lot of factors outside of the President's control.

Being a Republican means you get to choose your own reality.

Why would anyone think that? The tax cuts allowed people being ravaged by inflation and a heavily graduated tax scale to keep more of their money.
