The nationwide distribution of gas mask kits began yesterday in Or Yehuda, part of a program in which masks will be provided to the entire population over the next three years. In the initial pilot stage, gas mask kits will be distributed over the next month to residents of Or Yehuda, Kiryat Ono and the vicinity. The actual distribution is being carried out by the national postal service, the Israel Post, under the supervision of the army's Home Front Command.
The kits may be picked up at distribution centers after presenting an identity card. Heads of households are entitled to receive kits for their spouses and children. For a fee of NIS 25 per household, the post office will deliver the kits to residents' homes. Thus far, the service is only available in the areas of Or Yehuda, Kiryat Ono and Yehud, where the pilot program is being carried out. Delivery from the post office can be arranged through the Israel Post Web site (www.israelpost.co.il) or by calling 171. Home delivery will eventually be available throughout the country.
Individuals who are in possession of old gas mask kits previously given out through the Home Front Command must return them at distribution centers as a condition of receiving a new mask. Old kits were collected after the fall of Sadam Hussein's government in Iraq in 2003; this move allayed concerns on the part of the defense establishment of an attack on Israel with non-conventional weapons.
It was determined that new kits would be distributed following renewed concern over the past two years that non-conventional weapons might be used against the country. Although distribution is expected to take three years, in the event of an emergency, the Home Front Command is prepared to provide kits to the entire population within a matter of a few weeks.
