Barack Obama is still struggling to kick smoking, according to his first medical examination since becoming president.

Obama is sensitive about his cigarette habit and tetchy with reporters who raise it. But after his 90-minute medical at the Navy hospital outside Washington yesterday morning, his doctors confirmed he had not yet managed to conquer the habit and suggested he "continue smoking cessation efforts".

The doctors said the president used medication to try to ease the pangs, they described it as "nicotine replacement therapy, self-use".

Obama promised Michelle when he embarked on his campaign to become president he would quit, at the time he said he was smoking about eight a day.

He told reporters last year he had quit but still had an occasional cigarette, without specifying how many.

His health was described as excellent and he does not have to return for another medical until 2012. Obama, who is 48, has 20-20 vision, weighs 179 llbs in his shoes and clothes, and requires little medication. Apart from the nicotine replacement, he uses a non-steroid anti-inflammatory medication associated with physical activity: he regularly plays basketball at the White House.

The doctors also recommended "moderation of alcohol intake".

So we've heard. And not seen.

He's quite the "force" on the court according to the floorlicking acolytes in the media.....who also fell all over themselves spewing the praise of the "athletic" J Fing Kerry blow up doll / dork.

Death to everybody who does not get outta my way.

Typical political doublespeak from a career politician. If you still have an "occasional cigarette" you haven't quit. I used to have an "occasional cigarette" myself. 40 to 60 of them a day,as the occasion required.

He does have my sympathy on this one though, even if on nothing else. Quitting smoking is NOT easy for somebody that has been doing it for 20+ years, and it ain't exactly like his new job is lacking in stress.

Also, when you consider what a narcissistic SOB he is,it's gotta be killing him that he can't quit. There ain't no AA set-aside program for addiction, and this is probably the first real challenge he has ever had in his whole life.

Adventists have a smoking cessation program that has a high percentage of success.

How long ago did you quit smoking?

Remember the old line, "It's easy to quit, I've done it a dozen times."?

How long ago did you quit smoking?

I'm not really sure. Probably around 10 years ago.

I still have the occasional craving to smoke that hits me so hard I get dizzy, though. It doesn't happen often and it only lasts for a few seconds, but it does happen. I have even had dreams about smoking a cigarette that were so exciting they woke me up and had me happy and smiling.

Addiction is a powerful and jealous God,and it doesn't like being ignored.

Like other addicts,I will be a addict to tobacco for the remainder of my life.

The ironic part is I had no trouble at all quitting drinking or using drugs. I just somehow had a moment of clarity one day,and it occurred to me that I had lost about 6 or 8 months. I have no idea what happened during that time period. It's just a black hole. It may have even been longer than that for all I know. Anyhow,I took that as a good first clue that maybe it was time to back off a notch or two.

BTW,here is a little tech tip for you all. White whiskey and Quaalude's are NOT the basis for a healthy diet, and they do NOT make you a clever boy. Trust me on this one.

A good friend of mine was a smoker that played hoops. He got lung cancer when he was 36 and died at 38. I don't think there are any medical studies anywhere that say if smokers exercise they're less likely to get cancer.

I have often heard people say quitting cigarettes is harder than quitting crack or heroin. I wouldn't know as the mere smell of tobacco is disgusting to me.

Never touched cocaine or heroin either. Although, I did get a hold of a bottle of Roxanol once, so I understand how addiction to opiates could come quite easily. That was some good stuff.

I don't know if that is true or not because I was never addicted to crack or heroin. I have never even SEEN crack.

I do know for a fact that if I ever face a bigger challenge that quitting tobacco,I am screwed. Hell, the only way I quit was by getting a respiratory disease from remodeling my house that damn near killed me. I literally didn't have enough wind to inhale a cigarette. I spent almost 2 years blacking out from doing nothing more than just walking from the house to the truck. No warning,no gasping for air,no nothing. All of a sudden I wouldn't be able to breath, and I'd black out just like somebody flipped a switch and fall down where ever I happened to be standing. And I STILL wanted a cigarette so bad at times I would get dizzy just thinking about it.

There have been times when I've been on the court just shooting around with a Honduran puro nearby:)
