Hummer May Rise From Grave The Wall Street Journal General Motors reportedly revisiting two previous offers for the brand. print email share recommend (0) General Motors Co. is looking at two offers for its Hummer brand after a deal to sell the line of sport utility vehicles to a Chinese manufacturer collapsed this week, a person familiar with the situation said Thursday. The latest suitors previously submitted bids for Hummer, which GM turned down in favor of a deal with China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery. But the auto maker is giving the bidders a fresh look after Tengzhong failed to win approval from Chinese regulators for its bid, the knowledgeable person said. GM said Wednesday it would wind down Hummer operations after concluding Tengzhong wouldn't be able to finalize the deal. That process continues as GM weighs the latest offers. An effort to sell GM's Hummer unit to a Chinese company fell through after Chinese authorities nixed the deal. Heard on the Street's Andrew Peaple discusses what went wrong. Plus, what the deal says about Chinese cross-border M&A. Hummer's extinction remains likely, given that both potential buyers have already been turned down by GM. But the auto maker, facing the latest in a string of failed efforts to sell underperforming brands, is willing to consider even a long-shot deal if it comes with adequate financing, the person familiar said. If the new offers fail to produce a deal, Hummer will join Pontiac and Saturn in the scrap yard of failed brands. Tengzhong planned to pay $150 million for the brand. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I love mine, as you all know. I've had both the H2 and the H3 now. Never had a significant problem with either of them, found them to be great for long road trips, and of course there is nothing better for snow/mud/off road. It will be interesting to see where the price goes if Hummer does in fact disappear.

What are you gonna do for service? My wife got a used Land Rover last year and it's a royal pain in the butt trying to get such mundane items as windshield wipers for it.
Most of the replacement things (windshield wipers for example) are GM standard. The dealership I bought it from (Jeff Wyler) gave me a ten year warranty on parts and service. I'm not concerned about it. Fact is, I'm easy on vehicles. If I want to go 'muddin' I get out one of the ATV's. Where I live, I have exactly one stop sign between my home and my office ten miles away, which is also why I get pretty good mpg with it. Its relatively flat to rolling land, and 55 mph county highways after that one stop sign for me.

It will be interesting to see where the price goes if Hummer does in fact disappear. I'm sorry BE, Hummer has the taint of GM and at one time I did consider getting an H2, I will never now. I have heard good things about the H3 alpha.

What concerns me since I heard that auto mechanic with a radio show mention auto companies were discontinuing parts after as little as ten years was how they can do this? And he said Toyota was the best? They used to be horrible. My Dad used to have to close product lines of a Fortune 500 company, among his many other assorted duties. One thing he specifically told me was he had to arrange for spare part availability for seventeen years after closing. Pretty easy, he found a company that specialized in supplying these heavily marked up parts. Usually the cost was inventory on hand and any equipment specific to the obsolete products.

Understandable. I loved both the H2, and the H3 I currently have runs great, tears up snow or ice covered roads, and has most of the bells and whistles the H2 had. Biggest difference (besides size and mpg of course) is my H3 doesn't have a built in nav system, but that was an easy add on that actually didn't cost me a dime. I'm not worried about parts.

My wife is on her third Toyota - 2 Avalons which she really really loved but simply are impracticable for our lifestyles 'out here' in a rural area - and her dog rescue work (over 800 dogs saves this year alone to date). She's currently driving a Highlander (2008 model) and likes it.
