The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation after an newly hired American Eagle pilot, Captain Patrick Ford, suffered a “medical emergency” shortly after taking off from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport this past Saturday night. The pilot of American Eagle (Envoy) Flight 3556, who became incapacitated during the flight, later died at an area hospital. The plane returned to O’Hare International Airport at 7:57 p.m., 37 minutes after departing for Columbus, Ohio, according to FlightRadar24. Captain Ford was talking to an air traffic controller (ATC) when his voice suddenly stopped. ENY3556: Tower, Envoy 3556… The pilot’s co-pilot, Line Check Airman, Captain Brandon Hendrickson came on the radio seconds later and can be heard calmly telling air traffic controllers (ATC) what happened and requesting paramedics. According to an archive of audio recordings on ATCLive, the co-pilot can be heard informing ATC of the incident: “We need to return. Captain is incapacitated… he’s knocked out. We’re going to need paramedics.” ATC then advised pilot Hendrickson, who was supposed to be flying to John Glenn Columbus International Airport in Ohio, to descend and reposition the aircraft for arrival back to O’Hare airport. Listen to the recording between the pilot and ATC: Thankfully, Captain Hendrickson was able to take control of the plane and land safely. Ford was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His cause of death was not immediately released. The carrier said in a statement: “Despite heroic efforts by those on board and first responders on the ground, our colleague passed away at the hospital. We’re deeply saddened and are doing all we can to support his family and our colleagues at this time.” Ric Wilson, Vice President of Flight Operations of the airline, also praised the pilot for landing the plane and taking care of those onboard: “Sincere thanks to Line Check Airman, Captain Brandon Hendrickson, for his leadership and professionalism in the safe handling of his aircraft, passengers and crew.” The FAA is now investigating the incident. Aviation sources believe the captain in training died of a heart attack, but officials have not confirmed the cause of death. In May, an international coalition of aviation and medical professionals sounded the alarm about vaccine damage among pilots. The coalition receives daily messages from pilots with vaccination damage. Most airlines employ pilots who have suffered vaccination damage.
