The movement to legalize marijuana has enjoyed an unbroken string of victories on the state level over the last decade. But as Congress considers nationwide legalization , proponents of legal cannabis are making the same empty promises they made to the residents of every state that took their advice.

They spoke of marijuana as a harmless drug that gave a cheap high and nothing more — not at all like the deadlier hard drugs such as meth and opioids, with their unhealthy and even lethal consequences. They also downplayed the idea that widespread drug use would bring about societal maladies............

Smoke'em if you got'em...RINOZ insist on regulating personal behavior. RINOZ can go to hell in a handbasket. RINOZ are as worthless as DemRATZ.

Smaller government doesn't include making up more ridiculous excuses to ARBITRARILY arrest WeThePeople for imbibing something we can easily grow in our backyard gardens. Get lost, RINOZ...Making America Great Again means reverting back to a far more libertarian stance on stuff like this.

Who cares? The folks who saw "Reefer Madness" once and actually believed it...lol.

The only reason pot was demonized and made illegal was the Feds needed something to do for those who lost their jobs busting rum runners when Prohibition ended. Then, Big Beer and Big Liquor added their propaganda as they didn't want competition that folks could grow on their own. Plus, the DeeCeeSwamp likes to get their cut in sin taxes, and marijuana has the potential to evade the sin tax structure...MUD

Marijuanna shouldn't be legalized. The penalties should also be minimal like a hundred bucks or something. Unless you traffic it.

Sends the wrong message to be legal.

Shall we also Prohibit the sale and consumption of liquor, wine, and beer? Sends the wrong message to be legal.

Virginia decriminalized marijuana just about 13 months ago, so there has been a period where folks are wondering just what they are allowed to do in public. Last Fall, I was talking to a local police officer I know and asked him, "What EXACTLY is Richmond s policy regarding smoking dope in public?"

His response was, "Same as drinking alcohol... Don't Be Stupid!!"

As a libertarian, I gotta agree with him...as long as you ain't endangering yourself or others, it shouldn't matter to other folks if that "cigarette" someone is smoking contains nicotine, clove, CBD, or THC.

Que sera sera...no need to give our Federal police forces yet another excuse to arbitrarily arrest WeThePeople. If pot smokers are such a plague on society, let folks deal with it at the State or Local level.

I don't use it, and won't. I don't care if other people do. And I'm not going to care because you do.

I actively dislike smelling it. I actively dislike it when people are staggering around high. I think you're oppressive for caring and I actively dislike oppression.

I'm an equal opportunity hater.

Caffeine? Jesus fucking Christ. People who CARE in ANY WAY about CAFFEINE are fucking retards who need to be pushed out to sea on an ice floe.

I definitely know Stonerz who seem to go thru life in a half-conscious, THC-enhanced trance, but most folks I know treat pot just like mixed drinks or wine. While I drink a few beers here and there, I sorta left wine and liquor consumption a coupla decades ago.

To each his own, I reckon, but I don't think the Feds really have any role in enforcing individual marijuana consumption. Now, I do believe the Feds need to be guarding our borders to prevent the import of the nasty drugs like cocaine and fentanyl...MUD

Government is in the last resort the employment of armed men, of policemen, gendarmes, soldiers, prison guards, and hangmen.
The essential feature of government is the enforcement of its decrees by beating, killing, and imprisoning.
Those who are asking for more government interference are asking ultimately for more compulsion and less freedom.

I dislike beer and only drink wine when the misses buys a bottle. I like rum ok, but never buy that either, so my alcohol consumption usually consists of a margarita at a Mexican restaurant once month. I don't think there's anything wrong with alcohol, I just don't drink it because it has no draw for me. I don't think of alcohol as a moral issue.

I don't think there's anything wrong with tobacco, other than the obvious (it's not good for you), and that I really don't like it at all. I will tolerate a cigar once every few years, in the right social circumstances, but this is not something I ever do. Tobacco is not a moral issue.

There is nothing wrong with caffeine in any sense. It isn't a moral issue. That Mormons think it is makes them completely unserious persons, and exposes their religion itself as an absolute joke. Their God is such a nag that he worries about coffee. What a complete buffoon. Or rather, what a non-existent entity. The people who actually believe that crap are the buffoons. I drink two cups of coffee a day, in the morning. Unfortunately, it doesn't really do a thing for me. Other people get some sort of a buzz from it, I guess. I just find it to be a pleasantly warm, somewhat earthy cup of nothing.

Drugs are a moral issue for me, meaning that I don't like them. Pot stinks to high heaven, and it makes you stupid. I hate the smell of cigarettes, and I REALLY hate the smell of pot. I don't want it illegal, but I look down on everybody who makes a habit of using it. Using it once in awhile socially? I won't do that either - stinks too much and makes you stupid. But if people want to do that, I don't care.

In a similar vein, I don't care if they do heroin, and then fentanyl and die. Good riddance. I do not want to build up a big intrusive police force to save people from themselves, because that never happens. Instead, the police just become overmighty bastards. Many on the right are sympathetic to the police; I am not. They are overpaid thugs.

I don't want a large police force, and as far as I am concerned the hard core drug users can go die in a hole.

Went back and reread your post and was struck by how unique different cultures and different individuals are with respect to these various stimulants, and mood-altering substances. Wine was/is a sacred aspect of Christianity, but then the Prohibitionists waged a Holy War against all forms of alcohol 140 years ago.

And while I was always proud to be a Reagan conservative, I interpreted Nancy Reagan's iconic "Just Say No" campaign as supporting personal choice, not more excuses for government powers to Abuse WeThePeoplez God- given rights...MUD

To me, the religious obsessions with various substances are just people seeking to control the fun of other people. It never had anything to do with God. The fact that people belligerently insist that it does means, to me, that their God does not exist, but that they might need to be napalmed to keep them in their place - which is not telling me or anybody else what to do or not do because their imaginary friend tells them so. Fuck them.

As far as "Just say no" goes, I agree with the sentiment: Just say no. I always have. And I never felt like I missed out on anything on account of it. If I decided to say "Yes" once, or once in awhile, or every day, that is my own fucking business. I loathe the police presence on these issues every bit as much as I loathe the religious presence, and I would napalm the police who enforce these laws just the same as I would napalm the religious nuts. Fuck them all.
