Global engineering firm URS Corp. has informed the state it intends to lay off 134 employees in Birmingham starting mid-March, according to the Alabama State Dislocated Worker Unit.
California-based URS entered the Birmingham market in 2007 when it purchased Washington Group International and its locally founded general contractor subsidiary Rust Constructors.
The local office of URS said Rust Constructors would not be affected and referred further questions about the layoffs to its corporate office in California and Idaho. They did not return phone calls in time for press.
In a December filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, URS said it was discontinuing its Washington Division brand which Washington Group became after the 2007 acquisition and integrating it under the URS Corp. brand.
