Boeing to lay off 1,020, including in St. Louis St. Louis Business Journal - by Kelsey Volkmann

Boeing issued 60-day layoff notices Friday to 1,020 employees, including some in St. Louis.

Fewer than 100 local workers in Boeing's St. Louis-based Defense, Space & Security unit are affected, said Dan Beck, a Boeing spokesman.

Most of the affected employees work in information technology as part of Boeing’s Engineering, Operations & Technology unit in Washington State and California, he said. Their last day of work will be in April.

This is part of Chicago-based Boeing (NYSE: BA)'s plan to cut 10,000 jobs companywide, including about 1,000 in the defense unit.

Boeing’s Defense, Space & Security, led by Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg, is the second-largest employer in St. Louis with $33.7 billion in revenue in 2009 and 16,000 local workers.

Staggering list of layoffs you've noted the past 24 hours. Debunks this insane 'happy happy, joy joy' crap which like the laughable 'green shoots' stories from 10 months ago, falls short of reality.

That is why I'm doing it. You have Brian S posting all this crap about how great the economy is, yet the economy is only doing well for businesses which lay-off people.

This economy is a killer for the small business and the worker. The CEO, CFO, etc., are making out like bandits in Obama's new economy and it's insulting to say how things are improving given the facts on the ground..

There's always lay offs...

This CEO isn't, nor is my CFO, or my COO for that matter.

As for Brian S...I'm just waiting for his blood dancing related to deaths in Afghanistan. Throughout Bush's two terms he positively delighted in posting articles detailling them.

I guess cause its Owe-Bama they aren't quite as 'dead' huh?

Is it your contention that the employment outlook is good? What jobs are being created, real jobs, not government temporary jobs, for all these people losing their jobs?

Retail? teaching jobs? industrial jobs?

I'm all ears. Educate us!

Nope. But the conditions for emplyment are getting better. It's a lagging indicator.

That answered, is it YOUR contention that layoffs are only occurring now?

Oh, my bad! I found that Dollar General is expanding! Gee, let's see what wiki has to say about this store...

Although it has the word "dollar" in the name, Dollar General is not technically a dollar store because it has goods that are priced at more (or less) than a dollar. However, goods are usually sold at set price points of penny items and up to the range of 50 to 60 dollars, not counting phone cards and loadable store gift cards.

Dollar General typically serves communities that are too small for Wal-Marts. It competes in the dollar store format with national chains Family Dollar and Dollar Tree, regional chains such as Fred's in the southeast, and numerous independently owned stores.

There you go War. There is your "new economy." Now I think any work is good work, but as liberals told us for 20+ years, these aren't jobs you can support a family of 4 on. You can't pay off your mortgage on a $450,000 McMansion working here. You can't afford health insurance working at this place.

You expect some Boeing worker to be happy working at this Dollar Store??????

Obama's, and War's, new economy; we're all walmart greeters now.

Dollar General - Best Leveraging of the Recession in 2009

By Barbara Farfan, About.com Guide

Dollar General was best at leveraging a discount status for short-term recession sales and long-term success in 2009.(More about Dollar General’s bests below.) 7 of 9 Gallery Index Prev Next ""Barbara Farfan for About.com The public-turned-private retail chain, Dollar General, successfully went public again in 2009 with a successful IPO, and shortly thereafter announced that its year-to-date profits were up 296%.

Not to rest on its discount laurels, Dollar General worked diligently to expand its merchandise offerings by adding a private apparel line, discount toys, and lottery tickets to its merchandising mix. After opening 500 new stores in 2009 and 600 new stores in 2010, Dollar General should be well po

Of course not, but the Brian S "happy hour" runs against what we see in the real world.

He can post all the White House talking notes he wants, but the reality is far, far worse than is being reported.

I did. Bush and his clowns changed burger-flippers to "manufacturing". I said it loud and proud that that was bullcrap.

Maybe whatever "yous" you were referring to were just happy to see you finally able to land the drive through gig, war.

Neb...stop posting all this "conservative claptrap" scaremongering about the economic / employment outlook which is really ramping up now.

War's on top of it!!.....he's already noted the 2000 jobs Oracle will add from Sun Micro acquisition ....... Sun having been forced by the current regime's relentlessly socialistic regression to axe ~11K employees.

2000 job additions plus ~11000 job losses is good news any way you look at it:):)

Death to everybody who does not get outta my way.
