"Time to Get Rid of Income Tax!!" ""The cost of enforcing the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) is over $1 trillion a year," King said during a visit to Council Bluffs. "We're consuming 9 percent of our Gross National Product just with the IRS. It's time to get rid of income taxes, implode the entire thing." King's national tax on retail sales and services, also known as the Fair Tax, would mean that people would only pay a 23 percent consumption tax each time they purchased a new item or service, as opposed to paying 43 percent in taxes going to the federal government. "Everybody keeps the money they earn in their pockets," he said. What's more, the Fair Tax would provide a prepaid, monthly rebate for every registered household to cover the 23 percent consumption tax spent on necessities up to the federal poverty level, King said. In this manner, the Fair Tax completely untaxes the poor, he said. It would take a little money to administer this tax, King said, but 45 states already collect sales taxes so the mechanism is there to expand it nationally." If you have some time, would you please explain each of these three in more detail?" j-f: "I probably should have listed the three in reverse order, because it is from obedience that the other two derive. Obedience: Many believers, both Christian and Jew, see as one of the most significant events ever to take place in the history of mankind the revealing of His law to Moses in the form of the Ten Commandments. In all other matters, the Lord spoke through Moses, or one of His other prophets. But in making the Ten Commandments known, He Himself spoke. They represent the moral law of God, from His own lips. Those who claim that obedience to God implies that people have no free will, or that God is somehow tyrannical in nature, need to take a good look at those commandments (as well as the teachings of Christ which followed 1200 years after) and compare them to the unyielding ruthlessness embodied by the Koran, and the prescriptions of other holy books. Then I believe they need to ask themselves: (1) How can a civilized society survive without a universally-accepted moral law? (2) Upon whose word should we better base such moral law on than God's? (3) What within the Ten Commandments is unreasonable as regards what should be expected of a 'moral' society (i.e., can one actually believe that, by setting down those basic rules of living, God is somehow being overbearing or tyrannical? And, in following them, are we somehow diminishing our quality of life or serving as blind followers of a power-hungry Lord who allows us few choices in life?) My personal answers: (1) It can't. (2) There is no other. (3) Nothing (No. No.) Scripture describes the 'last days' of earth as being rife with what is called onnomaea, a form of lawlessness – meaning that mankind will turn its back on those commandments, claiming that they are 'too restrictive and controlling'. If one is to understand the teachings of the Scripture, there are basically two things that must be understood. One of them is the gospel of God (which has nothing to do with your question); the other is the law of God, to which we are expected to strive for obedience. In the Old Testament, God revealed three different types of law to His people: (1) civil law, by which a theocracy (as was early Zion/Israel) must be governed, and in which the only lawmaker is God. In a theocracy governed by scriptural civil law, the law always prescribes a physical punishment (financial remuneration, physical pain, or even death, in some instances) for lawbreaking. (2) ceremonial law, by which the people celebrated various religious ceremonies. These laws were simply foreshadowings of the coming of Christ, after which the Lord spoke anew through His Son. (3) moral law -- a reflection of the nature of God and what he expects of his children, represented by the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Christ. Arthur Pink -- virtually unknown and unappreciated until after his death – was a British itinerant preacher of the early 1900s who offered a wonderful description of the Ten Commandments: "The law of God expresses the mind of the Creator and is binding upon all rational creatures. It is God’s unchanging moral standard for regulating the conduct of all men. This law was impressed upon man’s moral nature from the beginning and though now fallen, still shows the work of it written in his heart. This law has never been repealed and in the very nature of things cannot be. For God to abrogate the moral law would be to plunge the whole universe in anarchy. Obedience to the law of God is man’s first duty." D. James Kennedy, pastor of Coral Ridge Ministries (whom I had the privilege of meeting about twelve years ago), has reflected: All of the various commandments of the Scriptures may be subsumed under one or another of the different Ten Commandments. They are a perfect standard of righteousness. The more I have studied them over the years, the more amazed I am that all things pertaining to the conduct of man's life and his relation with others and to God in this world are subsumed under these Ten 'Words'. Since civil law has been abrogated, and ceremonial law has been eclipsed by the coming of Christ, many people claim that God’s moral law is also malleable (I recall reading an article by Dr. Laura Schlessinger in which she lamented that the Ten Commandments have been denigrated into the being considered the 'Ten Suggestions'). God’s moral law has taken the place of original civil law in that it has laid the foundation for governments which seek to provide a moral base (America being the foremost example). The civil use of moral law allows nations to rely on God-given principles to form a system of laws that are righteous (i.e., upright, arising from a sense of perfect justice). Such a reliance on scriptural foundations for law is a far cry from a theocracy. But the more important function of His moral law is as a guidebook for living a righteous life. All human beings fall short of His guidelines, but He is forgiving, as long as we are consistently and sincerely seeking to live as Christ-like a life as possible. When Christ suffered the agony-filled passion and sacrificed His own life for our continuing sins, He also said that He would write His law upon our heart so that we would voluntarily want to keep it in remembrance of that sacrifice. And scripture is replete with (both Old, pre-Christ, and New Testament) leaders who embraced that desire and made it the litmus test for their life’s decisions: In Psalm 119:97, David proclaims, 'Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.'. 1 John 5:2 reads: 'This is how we love the children of God: by loving God, and carrying out His commands.' Christ Himself said, 'If you love me, you will obey what I command.' (John 14:15). And, unlike the warnings contained in the Koran, He does not command that we are not to take members of other religions as friends, that we are to confiscate their land and mutilate and kill non-believers, that we are to be ruthlessly violent in the achievement of religious objectives, that we are to believe that violence begets glory … The Bible, instead, focuses on the fact that man enjoys free will. That his choices are his own. The Lord lays out before him a well-lit path, defined simply by an acknowledgement of, and respect for, his creator, an awe of how wonderfully he is made, and a set of (common sense) rules by which he should live in peace, without inflicting pain or injustice on his fellow man. That such a loving roadmap could be interpreted as 'enslavement' (especially when envisioned alongside the violent, life- cheapening, tyrannical sacraments of Islam) is beyond my comprehension. Peace: As good an example of the peace described throughout scripture is embodied in the life of David. When he was feeling deeply distressed he did five things: (1) He asked God for relief and mercy (Ps. 7:1) David ends Psalm 7 with the personal assurance: 'I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.' If one believes scripture to be the inspired word of God, one also realizes that worry and lack of peace of mind are the results of we humans wanting to find solutions to problems without seeking God’s strength, guidance and wisdom. I carry an old, worn, yellowed hand-written piece of paper in my wallet. Have been carrying it with me for about forty years (it's found a home in probably ten different wallets :). I wrote it as a reminder to myself after enduring a particularly harrowing experience at the age of sixteen, and it has provided indescribable comfort and strength to me countless times over the intervening years: Let not your heart be troubled … do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own … Trust in the Lord of all our tomorrows to provide optimism for the future and strength for today. Over the years, each time I was successful in truly taking those words to heart, times of distress have been invariably transformed into times of inner peace. That is not to say that all situations were resolved to my liking. Far from it. But rather that I was led to recognize those aspects of the situation that were within my power to control, exhaust those avenues, and then rest assured that whatever remained should be left in His capable hands. And … conversely … when confronted by a major trial, when I have looked to my own resources alone, and allowed my human weaknesses (and, more often, my feminine proclivities) to rule the day, that magnificent inner peace was always lacking, no matter the outcome. Always. One of the most personally meaningful pieces of scripture I have ever studied is this one, pertinent here, written by Paul to the Philippians: 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.' 'Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable. – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.' Love: Love is possibly the most discussed topic in the New Testament. And most of Christ's teachings center around it. Possibly the best-known examples: 'Love your enemies … do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.' (Mat 5:44) 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' (Mat 19:19) 'Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellow man has fulfilled the law.' (Rom 13:8) 'You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.' (Gal 5:13) 'Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children, and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us' … (Eph 5:1) 'But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him.' (1Jn 2:5) 'Let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.' (1Jn 3:18) 'No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.' (1Jn 4:12) 'As the father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my father’s commands and remain in his love. My command is this: love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.' (Jn 5:9-13) Note that none of these verses (nor any other) restrict love to fellow believers, let alone charging us to over-run and destroy non- believers. The divergence between the Biblical view of man's respect and love for his fellow man, and the categorization as contained in the Koran of man’s worth (and right to live, and make his own choices) depending on his acceptance of Islamic teaching, is glaring. If you consult a Bible concordance and look up the word 'love,' you will find page after page of references by the Biblical writers (especially Christ and Paul) to infinite examples of (1) God's love for us, as well as (2) Christ's teachings on the ultimate importance of loving one another – even our enemies (again, the polar opposite of Islamic belief). One of the reasons I so adore Robert E. Lee is that he is a sterling example of a man who took these scriptural teachings to heart, and lived them every moment of his daily walk. I remember reading, in various sources, an account of a soldier who was surprised when he heard Lee speak in glowing terms about a fellow officer. The soldier, hearing this, commented to Lee, 'Sir, do you know that the man of whom you speak so highly is one of your worst enemies and that he never passes up an opportunity to slander you?' 'Yes,' Lee replied. 'But I was asked for my opinion of him, not his of me. I have no control over that and cannot allow it to disparage my view of him.' That kind of behavior was typical of Lee, and was the reason that he stood so tall among his peers – revered by his men, and honored even by those against whom he was called to fight. Lee was a devout Christian, who studied the Bible, prayed regularly, and professed to have come by whatever strength and wisdom he had through the Lord's love, guidance and direction. That kind of deep and rare scripturally-inspired spirituality is always discernible, by friend and foe alike – and is often accompanied by comments of the sort, 'He is somehow different.' Lee surely was. Biblical laws and teachings, which – if boiled down to the simplest terms -- serve only to allow mankind to acknowledge and give thanks to its Creator, and live together in harmony according to laws which He has handed down for that express purpose, respecting the lives and individual rights of others. They do not seek to threaten or coerce other religions. They do not seek to subjugate men to the wiles of a vicious and jealous god. They do not remove man's free will. They see human life as precious, and human liberty as a God-given treasure. As for you statement that Some Americans are going to vote against George W. Bush because they actually are "all worked up" on his statements to the effect that he is following the words of God as they have come to him. These folks are worried and see a vote for John Kerry as being a vote to maintain their individual liberty, and for some, their individual relationship with God. Just my own opinion: Even though I disagree with many of George Bush's decisions, I do believe he is a religious man. A Christian, by definition, takes his deeply held concerns to the Lord in prayer, in the hopes that the Lord will offer wisdom and guidance. To assert that President Bush's admitting that he did exactly that is frightening equates to discerning something ominous in the fact that our President is a practicing Christian. Bush did not say that God ordered him to force his religion on anyone. He did not say that his actions have a motivation that is specific to one religion to the exclusion of all others. He merely said that he seeks the Lord’s guidance (as did George Washington and Robert E. Lee, according to their writings, many times a day, each and every day). If we have come to a point in this country in which the citizenry is alarmed by such behavior, the character of the today’s citizenry bears no resemblance to the citizenry of Washington's or Lee's day, when such a reliance on Divine Providence was the norm.
