Love Thy Neighbor

Love Thy Neighbor

Leviticus 19:9-18

Introduction:

Mr. Rogers is a fixture in most people’s hearts with fond memories from Childhood...

The PBS Television show, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood ran for 4 decades and spoke to millions of viewers...

Mr Rogers would open the show with a song that he wrote...

Sing it with me:

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

by Fred Rogers

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,

A beautiful day for a neighbor.

Would you be mine?

Could you be mine?...

It’s a neighborly day in this beauty wood,

A neighborly day for a beauty.

Would you be mine?

Could you be mine?...

I’ve always wanted to have a neighbor just like you.

I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So, let’s make the most of this beautiful day.

Since we’re together we might as well say:

Would you be mine?

Could you be mine?

Won’t you be my neighbor?

Won’t you please,

Won’t you please?

Please won’t you be my neighbor?

2. Mr. Rogers passed away in 2003 of stomach cancer...

But Fred McFeeley Rogers, an Ordained Minister in the Prebyterian Church...

Understood the Biblical ideal of a neighbor...

Jesus said ". . . YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ "This is the great and foremost commandment. "The second is like it, ’YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ " (Matt. 22:37-39 NASB).

THIS IS QUOTED 9 TIMES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

What qualifies someone for a task? There is a story of the testing of a candidate for missions work:

One snowy morning at 5:00 a.m., a missionary candidate rang the bell at a missionary examiner’s home. Ushered into the office, he sat three hours past his appointment time waiting for his interview. At 8:00 A.M. a retired missionary appeared and began his questioning. “Can you spell?”

Rather mystified, the candidate answered, “Yes, sir.”

All right, spell “baker.”

“B-A-K-E-R.”

“Fine. Now, do you know anything about numbers?” the examiner continued.

“Yes, sir, something.”

“Please add two plus two.”

“Four,” replied the candidate.

“That’s fine,” said the examiner. “I believe you have passed. I’ll tell the board tomorrow.”

At the board meeting, the examiner reported on the interview. “He has all the qualifications for a fine missionary. First, I tested him on self-denial, making him arrive at my home at five in the morning. He left a warm bed on a snowy morning without any complaint. Second, I tested him on promptness. He arrived on time. Third, I examined him on patience. I made him wait three hours to see me. Fourth, I tested him on temper. He failed to show any anger or aggravation. Fifth, I tried his humility by asking him questions that a seven-year-old child could answer, and he showed no indignation. So you see, I believe the candidate meets the requirements. He will make the fine missionary we need.”

Spirit-given abilities are needed, but Spirit-produced fruit is more significant.

(Green, Michael P.: Illustrations for Biblical Preaching : Over 1500 Sermon Illustrations Arranged by Topic and Indexed Exhaustively. Revised edition of: The expositor’s illustration file. Grand Rapids : Baker Book House, 1989)

It is one thing to overcome the flesh and not do evil things, but quite something else to do good things. The legalist, like the Judaizers, might be able to boast that they are not outwardly guilty of adultery or murder (but see Matt. 5:21–32), but can anyone see the beautiful graces of the Spirit in his life? Negative goodness is not enough in a life; there must be positive qualities as well.

• This message of fruit would have spoke to the Galatians because it represented attitudes that control and dictate actions, rather than the actions themselves. Thus the believer’s manner of life flows from a genuine inner principle, not from adherence to an external law (Edgar H. Andrews: Free in Christ: The Message of Galatians. Evangelical Press. 1996, p. 298)

In the next few AM and PM Messages We are going to look at the Different Flavors of the Fruit of the Spirit. The Fruit is singular not plural. Its not I can chose what fruit I want to work on its all of them.

But how can I love my neighbor? Oddly enough, an Old Tes¬tament passage provides some of the best information in the Bible. According to this passage, I can love my neighbors by:

I. Making Provision for Their Needs (w. 9-10)

A. This involves a mind-set, a way of thinking

B. Note: no command to give, just to provide for them

II. Practicing Integrity in All My Relations (v. 11)

A. Encompasses lying, cheating, stealing

B. Lack of integrity = lack of love; I love myself more than another person and show it in this way

You loved "yukon" in special ways didn't you?

I loved the “special ways” that I effectively challenged you to prove your character assignation claim against Yukon.

Yes, the ways were very “special” to me – in that to this day, you have been unable to answer my call for proof of your malicious claim.

While you and the “forum antifa groupies” drove Yukon away, with your unrelenting harassment – you still never proved your claim.

And, you never will prove your claim, because you cannot.

What is wrong with you?

Where did he go, your indomitable Yukon?

With all his bluster, in the end he was weak and he slinked away in shame.

… drove Yukon away …

I said the “drove Yukon away” – Away from the forum.

Actually, I think maybe Stone banned him.

Let’s ask him: Stone, did you ban Yukon?

… Where did he go …

I have no idea.

… your indomitable Yukon …

Once again, it is easy to see that you have a problem with clarity.

You first describe Yukon as “indomitable” – when means he was “impossible to subdue or defeat.”

And then you say later:

With all his bluster, in the end he was weak and he slinked away in shame.

Which is it?

Was Yukon “impossible to subdue or defeat.” – or was Yukon “weak and [and had to] slink away in shame.?”

Make up your mind !!!

Why do you continue to have such a great problem with clarity in your posts?

The wise shall inherit glory, But shame shall be the legacy of fools.

How is this tied to anything – ANYTHING – in the discussion?

Clarity – CLARITY ???

Who has the “wisdom” and who carries “shame?”

I think you may have been breathing bovine manure much too long.

Perhaps you should stow your defiant belligerence and start wearing a mask.

Just saying …

Was Yukon “impossible to subdue or defeat.”

Yukon defeated himself. I was there. I saw the whole thing.

After the "incident" he was a hot mess.

Too bad he didn't get to hear your sermon "Love Thy Neighbor". It would have turned him from his path of self-destruction.

If you mean--will there be a choice?--yes, he can choose to accept the mark, or refuse it. To accept it will mean the loss of his soul for eternity. To refuse it will mean his physical death, but if he refuses for Christ's sake, he will be counted as a Tribulation Saint.

We are presently watching the whole world being funneled down to a decision: Christ, or Anti-Christ.

Best to make that choice NOW rather than wait, and be FORCED into a decision.

The Bible says: Choose THIS DAY whom you will serve...the god of this world, or the Lord of All

To make the choice, I think he should know if the mark is applied by a hot branding iron, a tattoo, an acid-on-skin engraving – or another means.

To accept it will mean the loss of his soul for eternity.

Wow, that sounds terrible – when added on to the application pain.

To refuse it will mean his physical death, but if he refuses for Christ's sake, he will be counted as a Tribulation Saint.

“Saint BorisY.”

That does have a good ring to it.

You like that, Boris?

How about a “none of the above” decision.

Since there are Christians who would say that this beast in John’s vision has already come and gone. It happened when —

Hitler caused hundreds of thousands of Jews and countless others to be marked and murdered.

I call to your attention that Thomas R. Schreiner - a Southern Baptist theologian – said there are actually three beasts.

Will Boris have a choice of the three, or will that be predetermined?

I am suddenly reminded that some Christians believe Christ’s return is imminent – but have thought this since apostolic times.

So, we may be wasting times discussing something again that Christians thought since apostolic times.

Be tthat as it may, let us proceed to you next point

We are presently watching the whole world being funneled down to a decision: Christ, or Anti-Christ.

Oops - What Does the Bible Say About Fear Mongers?

There are …

60 Bible Verses about Fear Mongers.

Perhaps now is the time for you to carefully review each of those, when you say …

Best to make that choice NOW rather than wait, and be FORCED into a decision.

The Bible says: Choose THIS DAY whom you will serve...the god of this world, or the Lord of All

Yea, and the Bible has a …100 Bible Verses about Making Choices.

So, thank you very much – but no thanks – I will pick my own choice of Bible verses about making a choice and not go with the one choice you again “cherry picked” for justification.

Furthermore,

If the basis of being a Christian is fear of everlasting torment(hell) and the reward of blissful immortality.... Doesn't that point to selfish intentions? I always ask Christians how would they feel knowing that most of their friends and families will be tormented for eternity whist they party away.....no one answered .... Well with any compelling argument... Can anyone answer?*

The question is not …

Whom will you choose?

… as posed by you.

The correct question is

What do I choose?

I grew up in the Southern Baptist tradition and the version of Christianity I learned was very much as you say...based in fear, guilt and shame. It never made sense to me that I could go to “heaven” if I prayed a prayer but my friends would go to “hell” because they weren’t “saved” by my efforts of evangelism. I thought it was very manipulative, shame based and an empty faith. I left that tradition in college.

Also, like your question, I had too many questions that couldn’t be answered even by the leaders of the Southern Baptist tradition. I was shamed for asking questions and not having enough faith to believe. The tradition I grew up in made it seem like it was their way or the highway, that if I didn’t believe exactly like they did without doubts that I wasn’t a true “Christian” and I would go to hell too. I had to come to accept that if their theology was in fact the one and only way to be Christian then I just wasn’t a Christian. When I finally accepted this (with help from loving friends and a good therapist) I can’t tell you the amount of peace and freedom that washed over me. I learned how not to live in fear.

Not sure what I’m trying to say other than I’m not sure you’ll get an answer to your question from people who actually believe the way you described.

I’m now a practicing Episcopalian. As some have mentioned, the focus isn’t so much on the afterlife, but on the life we live here and now. Finding ways we can love others and bring “heaven” to earth. I find it much more practical and fulfilling. When you focus so much on the afterlife of “heaven” and “hell” and who’s in and who’s out, it leads to a lot of judging others, feeling superior, the responsibility of “saving” everyone else...and it’s really hard to genuinely love and respect others, especially those who are different than yourself, when your entire focus and motives are convincing the other person they are wrong and you have the answers they need to save them.

I didn’t write that. A person using the pen name Theslayer1938 wrote that.

While my father was an Assembly of God preacher, he permitted me from the earliest time in my childhood that I can remember, to go to the Baptist church because I wanted to be with my friends. And I went there until the day I joined the Air Force and started jumping all over this “Wonderful World.” [Cue: Louis].

I may not agree with what Theslayer1938 wrote, I can however understand the feeling he is expressing and his reasoning behind that. Can you? [Please don’t’ force me to look up a 100 versus of “understanding others” in the Bible].

This brings me back to …

What do I choose?

I did not choose some other denomination like Theslayer1938 did. I have the Bible that my father gave to me, the day I left to serve our nation in uniform, laying in front of me and next to the computer screen. I pick it up often and after always reading the inscription he wrote for me to remember – I hoose to believe what I conclude to believe – This Christian will forever continue believe what he chooses to believe – and will never let you force your own cersions of Christian beliefs on me.

Can I get an “Amen” on that.

Probably not from you – But maybe from Boris, and others should.

Freedom of religion to me also means freedom from others trying to force their channeled individual religious beliefs on me.

Am I crystal clear on this?

In His name …

My brothers are hell bound. At least one is for sure. He's a fine upstanding law-and-order conservative Republican. But he has chosen to disbelieve that Christ is God. He's trusting in his good character to out weigh his bad character. I love him, but I've come to terms with my family's eternal decisions. Who knows. Maybe the rising terror of antichrist tyrants will scare them into faith in Christ (as God has designed it to do).

The Episcopalians sound like a good match for you, Gatlin. Wannabe Christians, liberal as hell in both politics and theology (Yep, that's you). Homosexuality celebrated in their church and clergy (you again). Extreme displays of pomp and religiosity (you).

Now pick up that Bible your Dad left you and turn to Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

If you want to discuss salvation with me...let's start with this simple verse. [Try not to ramble like you usually do. My time is limited. Thanks.]

The Episcopalians sound like a good match for you, Gatlin.

What sounds good for me is what I want and not what you think.

Wannabe Christians, liberal as hell in both politics and theology (Yep, that's you).

You don’t know that. It’s merely a characterization thought you pulled out of your ass in your attempt to use it as a slam because I don’t agree with things – actually most everything – you preach and try to shove down my throat.

Homosexuality celebrated in their church and clergy (you again).

You have never asked me about my position on homosexuality and I have never expressed it – so again, you don’t know that.

And again – stop pulling suppositions out of your ass.

You want to know something – ask.

Oh, but that is not “YOUR” Christian way.

Your Christian way is to prejudge people and conclude them to be what you want hem to be.

Am I right – or am I right?

Of course, I am.

Extreme displays of pomp and religiosity (you).

Religiosity: “A strong religious feeling or belief.”

Yep, that’s me. But I am not single-minded and totally absorbed with it, as you always are.

And, I don’t go around trying to shove it down everyone’s throat like you do all the time.

Pomp: “A show of magnificence.”

Yep, that’s me.

Now pick up that Bible your Dad left you and turn to Ephesians 2:8-9

No !!!

If you want to discuss salvation with me...let's start with this simple verse.

I don’t want to.

let's start with this …

Let us start with a subject of my choice.

I will let you know when I am ready.

My time is limited.

That’s not the only thing limited with you.

But that’s a different subject for another time.

Thanks

For What?

Did you get your morning bovine manure fumes inhalation fix?

Now pick up that Bible your Dad left you and turn to Ephesians 2:8-9 No,

If you want to discuss salvation with me...let's start with this simple verse. I don’t want to.

I just returned from the barn...only to find you are acting like my lead cow. Today, she decided it was her day to be milked...her way. What a disaster. First, she pooped in the milking stall, just to let me know she's gonna be difficult today. When I cleaned that up and tried to proceed, she would not move her head so I could drop in her favorite bucket of grain, molasses and warm water. Just like you, she said, "No". All I could do was stand and hold the bucket until she decided, "Maybe I'll give in a little". Then, Gatlin, she would not move from her feed position to her milking position. Nothing would convince her. She just said, "I don't want to".

Game on. I looped her leg rope on her hind leg, yanked with my might, a 1000 lbs resting on that leg, wouldn't budge, reached over, pushed a stick between her toes, leg lifted...and she moved into position. Whew. Even then she held her head haughtily up in the bars and rolled her eyes back at me with that smug look of defiance. (Tonight, she'll be just like a kitten)

Now, do you think after all that resistance from her, that I feel the least inclined to deal with your childlike stubbornness? No sir, I don't.
