'Uppity is' as 'uppity does' Russ Vaughn In the Obama proclaimed Age of Post-Racialism. Sarah Palin, addressing the Tea Party convention in Nashville, among other things, said this of The Messiah, "They know we're at war, and to win that war we need a commander in chief, not a professor of law standing at the lectern," Guess what folks? Those "post-racialists" that The One surrounds himself with reacted thusly: Charles J. Ogletree, founding and executive director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice, says he sees the "professor" label as a thinly veiled attack on Obama's race. Calling Obama "the professor" walks dangerously close to labeling him "uppity," a term with racial overtones that has surfaced in the political arena before, Ogletree said. Hoo boy...wait, boy, is that racist? One can never be too careful in these Post Racialist times, can one? Let's see now, I suppose if the professor has a PhD you could call him/her/it doctor, but sheez, everybody knows how uppity they are. I suppose if the professor were female you could say ma'am, but wait...didn't Barbara Boxer, another stalwart in The Age of Offense, just tell some military flunky four star that ma'am is a demeaning form of address? And to think of all those times my momma smacked me in the mouth for not callin' her and grandma and my Aunt Betty ma'am. Boy was she screwed up, huh? But I am truly thankful that all of my professors in Texas were so far behind the Post Racialist curve that none of them ever thought to give me a failing grade for using such an obviously racist and denigrating form of address as Professor. Truth be told, back then I probably pronounced it perfesser, know what I mean? And while I probably lacked the sophistication to have drawn much of a distinction between a thinly veiled attack and an all out, full-throttle, butt-kickin' back in those days, I don't think I really meant any harm. So please, clear this up for me, Mister Ogletree, Sir; is this middle-class American who believes everyone is equal under the law regardless of race or creed, a racist? Or are you just being a little too sensitive for common sense? I suppose some folks might call that uppity in these Post Racialist times, hmmm?
