Republicans Object to Biden Taking Credit for Success in Iraq By Mike Emanuel - FOXNews.com

Republicans say Vice President Biden can't claim success for Iraq after opposing the troop surge.

print email share recommend (8) AP

Jan. 21: President Obama and Vice President Biden acknowledge mayors before a White House address. As senators, Barack Obama and Joe Biden both opposed the troop surge in Iraq -- and Biden even wanted to divide the country into three sections.

But as vice president, Biden is taking credit for success in Iraq.

"I am very optimistic about Iraq," he said. "I mean, this could be one of the great achievements of this administration."

But Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, a member of the Armed Services Committee, said you cannot oppose the surge and then claim it for your legacy.

"When Joe Biden was in the Senate and Obama was in the Senate, they authored and were the chief architect of the resolution opposing the surge," he said.

The vice president also took credit for the troop drawdown.

"You're going to see 90,000 American troops come marching home by the end of the summer," he said. "You're going to see a stable government in Iraq that is actually moving toward a representative government."

But the drawdown was negotiated in the Status of Forces Agreement before the Obama administration took office.

"The reduction in U.S. forces that is under way right now is in fact important and it's largely the continuation of the policy that President Bush had set in place when he negotiated the drawdown schedule with Prime Minister Maliki at the end of 2008," Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institution told Fox News.

In fact, the agreement called for having U.S. troops out of Iraqi cities by June 30, 2009, and all U.S. combat troops out by the end of 2011.

"The timetable for withdrawing those troops had been worked on for a long time, way preceding this administration coming into power, and that timetable really centered on success in Iraq," said Col. Bill Cowan, a Fox News contributor. "That success starting really after the surge that was implemented by the previous administration."

At the White House, the day after the vice president's remarks, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked how the administration could take credit for Iraq.

"Well, putting what was broken back together and getting our troops home, which we intend to do in August of this year," he said, adding that Obama helped provide critical "political pressure" on Iraq policy before taking office.

Experts, noting a peaceful transfer of power is a key step for a young democracy, suggest another major test for Iraq is coming up March 7, when provincial elections are scheduled to be held.

So let's see, Obama is supposed to be blamed for everything that has happened on his watch, even though he inherited a mess, but it's wrong for him to claim success for a policy he's manged for over a year now?

What do you expect from people who were claiming that everything bad that happened from 2001 onward was Clinton's fault?

I’ll see what I can do about posting a more current pic, if you really want one.

"When Joe Biden was in the Senate and Obama was in the Senate, they authored and were the chief architect of the resolution opposing the surge," he said.

I was against the 'surge' in the wake of the 2006 mid term asskicking. I simply didn't believe Bush would change the ROE, and as such it was a mistake.

Bush, to his credit, changed the ROE, and in the end has been vindicated on that one.

Bottom line is we won the war in Iraq, and the Middle East is a bit better because of the removal of Saddam and his punk son's greasy and queasy. And the side benefits are beginning to tell in Iran, witness whats taken place there in the past 18 months.

This is just another example of why Biden was known for decades as 'The Dumbest Man in the Senate'. His track record since the early 1970's is a stunning display of being flat out wrong on just about every single issue you care to mention. Basically, he's Chris Dodd without the ability to shut up.

Norm Coleman garnered that honor most recently but previous to him it was Inhofe and then before him that guy from Indiana...WTF was his name...was VP once...looks like Inhofe is back to being it tho...

As the article notes, this was in place long before Owe-Bama was sworn in as President.

As this article notes, Owe-Bama and Biden voted against the surge.

And as we've seen for the past 13 months, Owe-Bama blames Bush for every single ill he can conceive on 'the last eight years prior to our administration'.

Sorry, GO65, neither Owe-Bama nor you can have it both ways.

Owe-Bama and Biden's votes, and comments related to the surge that won in Iraq are well documented. As I noted previously, I was against the surge in the wake of the 06 mid term asskicking. I'm sure you recall that from LP.

I was wrong, just as Owe-Bama and Biden were wrong.

The difference is I admit I was wrong. They are trying to claim CREDIT for something they desperately tried to STOP.

Lie.

The resolution failed cloture and was never voted upon...and the article notes no such thing...

You mean like the economic collapse you keep blaming on Obama?

Let's see if I've got this straight:

- Bush leaves Obama with an economic mess - Obama's fault

- Bush leaves Obama with a relatively stable and improving Iraq - Bush gets credit.

So the bottom line is that anything bad is Obama's fault, anything good is because of Bush.

Got it.

Honestly, GO65, according to the RAT-Media, you've got it skewed 180 degrees...din'tcha know EVERYTHING is Bush's fault?! Sheeesh, please try and keep up, my friend.

Fact is, Senator Obama supported every bit of spending Bush signed into law, and Obama has doubled down on Dubyuh's spending insanity, simply making a bad situation worse. C'mon, man, you gotta admit, Obama's made a bad situation far worse with his anti-business, pro-lazyRATpeckerhead policies. As much as you obviously HATE Dubyuh, is it beyond yer ability to admit that Obama's fiscal policies are very much WORSE than Bush's (which were admittedly inexcusable)?

I'm just testing you to see if you knee-jerkedly respond with trite Media propoganda or have the ability to rationally assess the situation. Please answer accordingly...MUD

"...it's wrong for [Biden] to claim success for a policy he's managed for over a year now"

I totally agree...Biden and Obama were opart of the seditious RAT cadre that actively sought to LOSE the Warin Iraq (Harry Reid and others actually testified that "THE WAR IS LOST!!"

And now these same RAT scumbags wanna point to the Liberation of Iraq as one of their defining achievements? LOL...it must suck to be an Obamabot when you haveta repeatedly and incessently defend the indefensible...MUD

BTW...can you explain how Biden has "successfully managed" the Liberation of Iraq? It's my impression that we're allowing the military to complete the process Bush had already set in motion.

FYI: Owe-Bama voted Aye on EVERY SPENDING BILL from 2005 forward.

And then doubled the federal deficit in his first six months in the Whitehouse.

He doubled the deficit, you can pretend otherwise if you wish. You only get one vote...allegedly.

He doubled the deficit

Thursday, January 8, 2009 CBO: Seeing Stars? ($1.2 Trillion Deficit Edition)

Willem Buiter is being proven right even sooner than he probably expected. The CBO provided a simply atrocious (but I imagine not surprising if you are up on such matters) report that the Federal budget deficit will come in just shy of $1.2 trillion, and that before any stimulus related deficits are added in, which are now expected to be $775 billion.

And it appears the CBO is working with pretty optimistic assumptions, so the budget gap ex Obama programs is likely to have been larger:

The budget watchdog warned that without policy changes such as a large stimulus, the economy would contract by 2.2 per cent in 2009, unemployment would peak at 9.2 per cent in 2010, house prices would fall a further 14 per cent and the economy would not return to its potential output until 2015.

I’ll see what I can do about posting a more current pic, if you really want one.
