NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — President Donald Trump has offered his condolences to the family of late country music and southern rock legend Charlie Daniels.Daniels' widow, Hazel, and son, Charlie Daniels Jr. thanked the president in the caption of a photo of his letter addressed to Mrs. Daniels shared on The Charlie Daniels Band's official Facebook account.
"Mr. President, we are honored that you would think of us in our time of grieving. Thank you so much, Donald J. Trump," the caption read.
President Trump's letter to Mrs. Daniels said he "was saddened to learn of the loss of your beloved husband, Charlie, and send my deepest condolences."
"Charlie will forever be remembered as a true American patriot, and his contributions to country music will be celebrated for generations. He inspired many Americans with his unyielding support of our brave men and women in uniform. Your husband reminded us that we must honor those who have sacrificed so much to defend our freedoms. our great Nation depends on artists like Charlie who promote love of country He will be greatly missed.
"During this difficult time, the First Lady and I send our prayers to you, your family, and all who loved Charlie. May his music continue to reverberate in the hearts of countless Americans."
Daniels, a member of the Grand Ole Opry and a Country Music Hall of Famer, died last Monday at the age of 83.
Absolute Publicity, Inc. said Daniels passed away at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage after doctors say he suffered a stroke.
His body was escorted by Mt. Juliet Police officers to Sellars Funeral Home along Mt. Juliet Rd. Monday afternoon. Fans lined the streets and paid their respects.
Daniels has raised helped raise millions for veterans through his own efforts and partnerships over the years. He also established a Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center at Middle Tennessee State University.
"Charlie’s love of life and country was radiant and inspiring. And we at MTSU shall work every day to sustain and extend his legacy through the good works of the Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center," MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee said. "Charlie will live on, not only through his music but also through the lives lifted through his generosity."
"An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor, and a true road warrior, Daniels parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children, and others in need.," his representatives said. "The Charlie Daniels Band has long populated radio with memorable hits and his signature song, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia."
