Homey don't do tables well...mertz Champion two-year-old LOOKIN AT LUCKY (Smart Strike) is the favored individual horse, but Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia is confident that the mutuel field, or "all others," will again be the favored wagering interest in the opening pool of the 2010 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) that opens its three-day run on Friday. Battaglia has installed "all others," which consists of all three-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the pool's 23 individual betting interests, as the 5-2 morning line favorite for KDFW Pool 1. Champion Lookin at Lucky, who capped his championship two-year-old season with a victory in the CashCall Futurity (G1), is the favored individual horse at odds of 8-1. The three-day pool opens at noon (all times EST) on Friday and wagering will continue at racetracks, satellite wagering outlets and online through 6 p.m. on Sunday. Other individuals likely to attract solid Pool 1 support include Remsen (G2) winner BUDDY'S SAINT (Saint Liam), unbeaten San Rafael (G3) winner CONVEYANCE (Holy Bull), Holy Bull (G3) runner-up JACKSON BEND (Hear No Evil) and unbeaten Delta Jackpot (G3) winner RULE (Roman Ruler). Those horses are all listed at 12-1. Next in line at 15-1 come Hopeful (G1) winner DUBLIN (Afleet Alex), Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) third-place finisher NOBLE'S PROMISE (Cuvee), and Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) winner SUPER SAVER (Maria's Mon). Members of that trio are listed as 15-1 risks. The wager provides an opportunity for fans to wager weeks in advance on contenders for the Kentucky Derby -- which will be run at Churchill Downs on May 1 -- and often at odds that are more attractive than those they would receive on the day of the event. Exacta wagering, a popular addition to the Kentucky Derby Future Wager betting menu in 2009, is back for all three pools in 2010. The Derby Future bet is a $2 minimum "win" wager. The minimum wager for a straight exacta, which requires the bettor to select the Kentucky Derby's top two finishers in the exact order of finish, is $2, while the minimum for exacta boxes and wheels is $1. The "all others" interest has been the strong favorite in the opening pool during the previous 11 years of the Derby Future -- and that interest has been a winning wager in Pool 1 five times. It happened again in 2009 when Mine That Bird (Birdstone), a three-year-old that was not an individual betting interest in any of last year's three KDFW pools, rolled home at odds of 50-1 in the Kentucky Derby. Other horses that were members of the mutuel field but went on to win the "Run for the Roses" include Charismatic (1999), War Emblem (2002), Smarty Jones (2004) and Big Brown (2008). "While setting the mutuel field as the favorite in the opening pool of the Kentucky Derby Future wager is pretty much a given, it has gotten more difficult to assign odds to the individual horses," Battaglia said. "So many of those horses have raced extensively or exclusively on synthetic tracks, while the Derby is run on traditional dirt. That's still a relatively new wrinkle in Derby preparations, but it adds to the fun and the challenge of a making a successful choice in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager." Lookin at Lucky is one of four Pool 1 wagering interests trained by Bob Baffert, trainer of Kentucky Derby winners Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998) and War Emblem. The others are Conveyance, CONCORD POINT (Tapit) and TIZ CHROME (Tiznow). Todd Pletcher, who has yet to win a Kentucky Derby, also trains four of Pool 1's individual betting interests. His horses are Rule, Super Saver, ESKENDEREYA (Giant's Causeway) and AIKENITE (Yes It's True). Dubai-based VALE OF YORK (Ire) (Invincible Spirit), who handed Lookin at Lucky his only loss in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, is listed at 30-1 in KDFW Pool 1. The winning payouts in all KDFW wagering pools are determined by the odds in place at the conclusion of each respective pool. There are no scratches or refunds on any wagers made during the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks future pools. If it is determined during those pools that one of the individual horses has suffered an illness, injury or other circumstance that will prevent that horse from competing in either race, wagering on that betting interest will be suspended at that point. The individual horses in each pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager are selected by a three-member panel that includes Mike Watchmaker, national handicapper for Daily Racing Form; Brad Free, Daily Racing Form's Southern California correspondent; and John Asher of Churchill Downs. Name-wise I like Maximus Ruler and Uptowncharlybrown. I'll probably throw down $20 on those two and maybe a Ben Franklin on All Others. I've got a hunch I know who war likes unless he's a cat hater.

Can you imagine that Storm Cat is now producing Quarterhorses because they can be AI'd? I haven't seen the others run other than Lucky and I like Smart Strike as a sire. He seems to be one of the best of the later Mr Prospector's. I loved Mr Prospector but then I loved all the Raise a Natives. They were fast and pretty. You never seem to hear from the Majestic Prince's or Exclusive Native's anymore though.

I looked up his pedigree, he should be a nice colt. Seattle Slews made good runners and he's the leading sire from the Bold Ruler line now. Doesn't your colt have a cross to Northern Dancer too? That's been a good nick, unless it's through Nijinsky. He threw a large percentage of crazy horses.
I have no idea, but I'm sure Doc owns a part of whatever syndicate is selling his semen. Did you know the first Secretariat colt was out of an Appy mare?

Seattle Slew... Excuse me if I get distracted I love old TB trivia. I looked the pedigree up again on Equineline, besides Seattle Slew on the topside he has Mr Prospector twice in the fourth generation (once through Forty Niner) and goes back to Northern Dancer twice in the fifth (once through Storm Cat). Your colt should be a good looker.
Holy cow Hugo looks like Robert Reiccccchhhhh's black brother! Avoid the KY Derby Futures Pool, it's a fools betting game. Too many horses don't even make it to the starting line, worse they had two pools last year that I checked. I don't think they give you a refund or another horse if your pick doesn't run. Damn Ladbroke took my bet on a horse that was later scratched and placed it on the favorite, a horse I was betting against because I knew it wouldn't win and didn't. Got my refund and guess who doesn't do business with them anymore. Losers. It's like betting a favorite to show and hope he makes you .20 on a $2 bet. Real bettors don't make stupid wagers.
Gambling is the one vice I only tried once and never did it again. I figured out right away that I would be a bad loser and a worse winner.

It's all fun, Gump. What's the matter, you never picked a lucky one? Yes, early on luck has a lot to do with it. I read about a horse man who threw down $200 on Funny Cide, and, don't hold me to this but he won $36,000...or thereabouts.
I lost ten bucks tonight when my Louisville Cardinals got their asses handed to them by St. John's. I bet in moderation.
My normal bet is a beer or a buck or two. Friendly bets.
I did OK at the track for awhile, sat next to a bookie and ex-track hound back in MI when they had racetracks. Tried to tell him to take the "vigorish" and stop gambling but he didn't listen. Lost a bet he booked on a 7-team baseball bet that looked like a sure thing, the guy placing the bet picked all the losers and guess what, they all won! He had a bunch of credit card debt before this and then had to payoff the mob and their super high interest rates. He was talking about how he wasn't in deep enough to get a leg or an arm broken but he was in real trouble. This guy went to the track at 4 AM and did his own clocking on workouts, the stuff they put in the DRF is partially faked. I missed a great bet, I had two 12-1 shots and a 20-1 shot at the big race in Arlington, IL and didn't place the bet. $6 trifecta paid $2K+. Did OK in '79 and a couple of years later, missed some big money, made pennies, then worked too hard and couldn't follow the local stuff. Didn't cash a ticket for years, but when you don't bet often or go to the track that's what happens. I tend to avoid favorites, they only win 34% of the time and the odds are low. Better Bet, name of a book I read and some of Andy Beyer's say make the value bet. I've read Steven Crist's book "Exotic Betting" and I swing for the fences with dimes. It's fun, no way like the bookie above I'd try to support my family by betting on horses. There are calculators available to tell you how much an exotic will cost. At ten cents you can do a bunch with $12. That's 120 bets, how many will win? Usually I just bet on one horse to win, the exotics have a bigger take at the tracks and I prefer the low take states like KY.
I believe that person you are mocking in that photo actually rode Seattle Slew, although it was in his later races not the triple crown wins.
I won $5 today when my team beat Syracuse in hoops. I'll collect it tomorrow.
