Rankings of alcohol-fueled car crashes, death rates from alcoholic liver disease, number of DUI arrests and the frequency of binge-drinking make Fresno U.S.'s 'drunkest' city. Teetotalers may want to steer clear of Fresno, Calif.
The city was just awarded the dubious distinction of being the No. 1 “drunkest” city in the United States by Men’s Health magazine, as reported in USA Today.
The magazine will publish a list of 100 major cities in the March issue that range from “drunkest” to “least drunk.” The rankings were based on data like alcohol-fueled car crashes, death rates from alcoholic liver disease, number of DUI arrests and the frequency of binge-drinking in the past month.
The Big Apple ranked eighth among the “least drunk” cities in the nation, behind (in order) Boston, Yonkers, Rochester, Salt Lake City, Miami, Newark and Durham, N.C.
Fresno, with a population of about 500,000, is situated 200 miles north of Los Angeles. The median age is 29, and the number of bars within 15 miles is 106, according to HomeInsight.com.
By contrast, there is just one museum and just seven movie theaters within 15 miles, according to HomeInsight.com.
Other cities that ranked high on the “drunkest” list were Reno, at No. 2; Billings, Mont., (3); Riverside, Calif. (4); and Austin, Tex. (5). Of the 10 drunkest cities, three are in California and three are in Texas. And three of the least-drunk cities are in New York State.
