He says he will not allow the federal government to come in and take the guns away. What about state government?
Good point. We are talking about state law here. Now it seems to me that if the citizens of Virginia, through their elected representatives, wish to regulate firearms by banning "assault-style" weapons they have every right to. Don't look to the second amendment for help. That only protects handguns in the home for self-defense.
And the forum gun-grabber chimes in.
Government is in the last resort the employment of armed men, of policemen, gendarmes, soldiers, prison guards, and hangmen. If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck... Et cetera.
Yes the price of democracy and states rights. Seem to remember another case of states rights in that place, very bloody
What LAW. Cite the law. You know better than that. A Remington 700 in the woods should work well for the zombie apocolypse.

The essential feature of government is the enforcement of its decrees by beating, killing, and imprisoning.
Those who are asking for more government interference are asking ultimately for more compulsion and less freedom.
