Title: How Trump May Finally Kill the WTO

GENEVA—In an ornate stone palace on the shores of Lake Geneva, just a stone’s throw from the Quai Wilson and the Palais des Nations, the Trump administration is waging its latest battle against the international order that the United States helped to build.

At issue is the fate of a little-known part of a little-understood institution: the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization. As soon as Wednesday, if U.S. President Donald Trump continues his administration’s yearslong campaign of obstruction, the WTO’s ability to resolve trade disputes between countries—pretty much its most important function—will likely be paralyzed. That means that the go-it-alone unilateralism that has characterized the Trump administration’s approach to trade could soon spread far and wide, essentially turning back the clock to a time when trade rivalries between nations were settled not with legal arguments but with tariff walls, trade barriers, and beggar-thy-neighbor protectionism. “When you listen to the rhetoric from the Trump administration, they argue that the United States is better off in a power-based, law of the jungle system,” said Jennifer Hillman, the senior fellow for trade at the Council on Foreign Relations. “I think the last three years have shown how wrong that is.”

The specific battle between the United States and the other members of the WTO centers on the seven judges of the Appellate Body, who ultimately decide appeals on trade complaints between nations. At least three judges are needed to hear an appeal. But with the Trump administration systematically blocking the naming of any new judges since it took office, no new justices have replaced those whose terms expired. On Wednesday, barring an unlikely eleventh-hour breakthrough, two of the last three judges will leave, and the Appellate Body will be down to one. Soon after, the wheels of trade justice will grind to a halt, with essentially no way to ultimately resolve big trade disputes like the yearslong battle between Airbus and Boeing.

“We’re getting to a point where we could soon prove a counterfactual,” said Keith Rockwell, the director of external relations at the World Trade Organization. “We have the WTO essentially because of economic nationalism, and the lessons of the Smoot-Hawley tariffs, and all those destructive policies.”

What would happen if the WTO didn’t exist?

We'd negotiate trade agreements with each country individually. Which is what Trump is doing. If the WTO worked, there would be no need for us to impose tariffs on other countries.

...or go to war with them.

And that would be bad for bidness.

There is no need to impose tariffs. Tariffs are a blunt instrument that harms your own as much as it harms your opponent

No you are wrong. It helps your domestic manufacturing.

We should have tariffs on every good that makes them more expensive then buying American. We may pay a tiny bit more but it is more than made up in jobs and less welfare. America first second and third. Dominate.

In theory. In practice, China is eating the tariffs to maintain their prices while our treasury grows by the tens of billions.

This presupposes you have products someone in your economy wants to buy at an inflated price. What has happened is idiocy. You export your industries and claim imports are hurting local manufactures. So you impose tariffs to raise the prices of imports thinking you will revive the industries that have gone. What happens is your people are taxed for buying cheaper imports reducing their buying power. Only an Idiot would think this is sound economic policy, but wait, this is the policy of the Idiot in Chief

It is not an inflated price. It is the price of doing business.

Lets see Trump put taxes on Aluminum for foreigners. More Americans working. No one noticed any difference in price. More Americans working.

Australia shouldn't bus Chinese shit they should produce themselves.

If you had an idiot like Trump running your country. Maybe you would produce more and not be so poor.

Not sure what you mean I suspect a typo.

Like yourselves we don't have a market for overpriced goods. We send raw materials to China and they ship back finished goods. We would like it to be otherwise but we long ago learned our market is small and protectionism didn't work. Cheer up we still buy shit from you

Idiots like Trump have attempted to run our country, but we have a balanced budget something the idiots who run your country cannot achieve. We produce things the world wants and we produce things we want also although the list is shrinking. our system of government allows us to get rid of an unpopular leader, you should try it some time

Yes many lovely places here although the bush fires are making life difficult, but there are other things here, top line education, good weather, and I don't know anyone who really care how you vote
