During a time in which many Americans find themselves traveling across the country, loosening their belts by another notch, and perfecting their personal Black Friday wishlists, one Texas couple got the week off to an impressively selfless start that left one local waitress feeling like she was dreaming.
Denny’s waitress Adrianna Edwards walks seven miles to work and seven miles home again for every shift she works at the restaurant.
“I have bills to pay,” she explained. “I’ve got to eat. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.”
While enjoying breakfast on Tuesday morning in Galveston, Texas, a couple Edwards was serving had a chance to hear the story of her lengthy commute—and the fact that she has been saving up to buy a car. That morning, Edwards was kind enough to give the woman some extra ice cream.
After finishing their meal and leaving the restaurant, the couple went to nearby Classic Galveston Auto Group on Broadway Street where they purchased a car. Mere hours after leaving Denny’s, the pair returned with the keys to surprise Edwards with a 2011 Nissan Sentra along with a note, instantly transforming the waitresses five hour walk to a quick 30 minute commute by car.
The couple who gave Edwards the car wishes to remain anonymous. The woman explained:
“I gave her a note that said, ‘I know it’s Thanksgiving, but I said, ‘Merry Christmas,’ and that, hopefully, someday she’ll just pay it forward.”
She added that Edwards “teared up, which made me happy that she was so moved by that.”
The waitress will now be able to begin college earlier than she had planned.
“I still feel like I’m dreaming. Every two hours, I come look out my window and see if there’s still a car there.
When I see somebody in need, I’ll probably be more likely to help them out (and) to do everything that I can to help them out.”
