Robert Forster, the handsome and omnipresent character actor who got a career resurgence and Oscar nomination for playing bail bondsman Max Cherry in Jackie Brown, died on Friday. He was 78.

Publicist Kathie Berlin said Forster died of brain cancer following a brief illness. He was at home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, including his four children and partner Denise Grayson.

Condolences poured in Friday night on social media. Bryan Cranston called Forster a “lovely man and a consummate actor” in a tweet. The two met on the 1980 film Alligator and then worked together again on the television show Breaking Bad and its spinoff film, El Camino, which launched Friday on Netflix.

“I never forgot how kind and generous he was to a young kid just starting out in Hollywood,” Cranston wrote.

His Jackie Brown co-star Samuel L. Jackson tweeted that Forster was “truly a class act/Actor!!”

A native of Rochester, New York, Forster quite literally stumbled into acting when in college, intending to be a lawyer, he followed a fellow female student he was trying to talk to into an auditorium where Bye Bye Birdie auditions were being held. He would be cast in that show, that fellow student would become his wife with whom he had three daughters, and it would start him on a new trajectory as an actor. A role in the 1965 Broadway production Mrs Dally Has a Lover put him on the radar of Darryl Zanuck, who signed him to a studio contract. He would soon make his film debut in the 1967 John Huston film Reflections in a Golden Eye, which starred Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor. Sign up to our Film Today email Read more

Forster would go on to star in Haskell Wexler’s documentary-style Chicago classic Medium Cool and the detective television series Banyon. It was an early high point that he would later say was the beginning of a “27-year slump”.

He worked consistently throughout the 1970s and 1980s in mostly forgettable B-movies — ultimately appearing in over 100 films, many out of necessity.

“I had four kids, I took any job I could get,” he said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune last year. “Every time it reached a lower level I thought I could tolerate, it dropped some more, and then some more. Near the end, I had no agent, no manager, no lawyer, no nothing. I was taking whatever fell through the cracks.”

It was Quentin Tarantino’s 1997 film Jackie Brown that put him back on the map. Tarantino created the role of Max Cherry with Forster in mind; the actor had unsuccessfully auditioned for a part in “Reservoir Dogs,” but the director promised not to forget him.

In an interview with Fandor last year, Forster recalled that when presented with the script for Jackie Brown, he told Tarantino, “I’m sure they’re not going to let you hire me.” Tarantino replied: “I hire anybody I want.”

“And that’s when I realised I was going to get another shot at a career,” Forster said. “He gave me a career back and the last 14 years have been fabulous.” Forster in Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool. Facebook Twitter Pinterest Forster in Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool. Photograph: RONALD GRANT

The performance opposite Pam Grier became one of the more heartwarming Hollywood comeback stories, earning him his first and only Academy award nomination. He ultimately lost the golden statuette to Robin Williams, who won that year for Good Will Hunting.

After Jackie Brown, he worked consistently and at a decidedly higher level than during the “slump”, appearing in films like David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, Me, Myself and Irene, The Descendants, Olympus Has Fallen, and What They Had, and in television shows like Breaking Bad and the Twin Peaks revival. He said he loved trying out comedy as Tim Allen’s father in Last Man Standing.

He’ll also appear later this year in the Steven Spielberg-produced Apple+ series Amazing Stories.

Even in his down days, Forster always considered himself lucky. “You learn to take whatever jobs there are and make the best you can out of whatever you’ve got. And anyone in any walk of life, if they can figure that out, has a lot better finish than those who cannot stand to take a picture that doesn’t pay you as much or isn’t as good as the last one,” he told IndieWire in 2011. “Attitude is everything.”

Forster is survived by his four children, four grandchildren and Grayson, his partner of 16 years.

Farewell Max Cherry !!!

RIP !!!

Well, it sounds like he ended up with kids and later a dude.

Anyway, I tried to recall him and couldn't so I looked at his filmography at Wiki and found I wasn't sure if I'd seen him in anything except the Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen films, both ridiculous movies, he played the same minor role of a crusty general in both flicks. And it wasn't too great because I can't recall him in either movie at all. He didn't star in any major TV series that I can see.

So my reaction is mostly: who?

Well, it sounds like he ended up with kids and later a dude.

Apparently none of his marriages lasted very long: Forster is survived by his four children, four grandchildren and Grayson....

The last kid was born in 1972, so did he decide to go homo after that like Bruce Jenner did, but not to the same extreme? Or was he queer the entire time?

Well, the article does say "Forster is survived by his four children, four grandchildren and Grayson, his partner of 16 years." Wiki doesn't say his status one way or the other. Grayson sounds like a man's name, at least to me.

Checking after you asked, I found after a search some references to a Denise Grayson, including her attending awards shows like this one include pictures of them.

I also thought that because he was in that weird Brando movie. He was the young guy that kept prancing around naked, riding horses naked, etc. Back then, such roles nearly always went to gay actors. When I saw it years ago, I was very surprised an actor like Brando would take that role. However, it was an era when you'd see Richard Burton in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and in Equus. There was a lot more variety of movie content back in the Sixties than there is today, in some ways at least.

Saw Forster in a movie recently. Small Town Crimes with John Hawkes. Movie started out pretty good and then fell completely apart about half way in.

Ah, I only saw the second mention of her at the end of the article. I somehow skimmed over the first mention entirely.

I did the same thing. Then I remembered seeing him in some films and he didn't strike me as gay. Who would have thunk it...an actor who isn't gay.

If you saw him prance in that Brando movie, you'd have thought he was gay too.

I looked again and thought I recalled that Banyon series. It was on NBC in 1972-73 and he starred in it as a gumshoe (detective) back in the Thirties.

I might dimly recall seeing an episode or two, maybe on cable re-runs back in the Eighties.

It was, of course, a Quinn Martin production.

As long as y'all are discussing "Actors who are not gay but if you watched them in this role you'd think twice", what's with that Hugh Jackman bloke in any of those movies he appears in where suddenly someone starts singing for no earthly reason? He looks as gay as a candle in the wind in those and the Oscar awards.

You must be thinking of Les Misérables...yeah it was miserable.

Otherwise Jackman starred in The Prestige, an excellent film. And he played Wolverine in the X-Men series.

Yes it was...as I recall, around that same time period there was another similar movie about a 19th century magician, but I can't think of what it was offhand.

The Prestige was better - adding Tesla and his futuristic technology was a nice touch.

Personally, I think Nikola Tesla was either working on it, or he could have actually transported cats, hats and people.

Too bad most of his research was seized by the Feds right after he died IIRC.

BTW there's a new movie coming out, Tesla vs Edison, apparently filmed in 2017 but just now being released.

I checked the reviews ( yeah, they had a few) at IMDB. Looks like pretty much everyone agrees that the movie falls dismally short on actual historical facts.

I think I'll pass on that one.

Was it The Illusionist with Ed Norton? (I didn't see this movie)

David Bowie multi tasking as an actor is always good!

he could have actually transported cats, hats and people

Even though I grew up watching Star Trek, and even though technology has proven me wrong time and again, I just can't get my head around transported material objects. I do pity his early test subjects!

his research was seized by the Feds right after he died

I need to do more reading on this.

everyone agrees that the movie falls dismally short on actual historical facts.

Hollywood is on a mission to destroy everything in their path. Entertainment is off the menu. They are currently laying siege to the white nerdy culture ie. Star Wars, Marvel Comics movies, etc. Edit: an they obviously don't care how much money they lose doing it.

I think Jackie Brown is one of Tarantino's best, surpassing many of his others including the most recent - all the more impressive because it's one of his first bigtime films. I've watched it 4 or 5 times and still think so.

If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and do so.

Thanks for the tip; if it's done even fairly well, I'll see it because the story fascinates me.

And I liked The Prestige quite a bit as well; the other magician movie released at almost the same time, weirdly enough, was The Illusionist with Ed Norton, also a very good film and a great actor. Have both on Blu-ray along with many hundreds of other great films, so cut the cable entirely 6 years ago with zero regrets.

I can't think of a bad film with Ed Norton in it, as a matter of fact.

I'll second that, great conspiracy movie too, lots of twists, nefarious puppet masters, switching identities. The older replicant babe from Bladerunner was in that too, Johanna something.

Just dug out a bunch of VHS tapes after I moved, think I might have that one.

I have seen that movie in the bargain bins. Next time I see one, will buy it as a backup to one we have.
