Title: Trump revokes California's auto emissions standards waiver

(CNN) - President Donald Trump announced Wednesday he was revoking California's authority to set its own vehicle emission standards, the latest move in the Trump administration's ongoing fight with the Golden State and attempts to chip away at former President Barack Obama's environmental legacy.

"The Trump Administration is revoking California's Federal Waiver on emissions in order to produce far less expensive cars for the consumer, while at the same time making the cars substantially SAFER," Trump tweeted.

The President made the announcement while visiting California for fundraisers. He was in his hotel in Los Angeles when he sent the tweets.

California's waiver under the Clean Air Act allowed it to set standards tighter than the federal standards, which have been adopted by more than a dozen states and became the de-facto nationwide standard, because automakers do not design different sets of vehicles to meet different standards in different states.

The Trump administration has long been at odds with California, especially on environmental issues. Talks between California environmental regulators and the administration broke down earlier this year. Yet this summer, the state negotiated an agreement with several automakers to design cars to meet standards higher than those set by the federal government.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said on Tuesday the Trump administration "has abdicated its responsibility to the rest of the world on cutting emissions and fighting global warming" and is acting "on a political vendetta."

The state's attorney general threatened a lawsuit if the administration goes through with the plan.

Attorney General Xavier Becerra said at a news conference following the announcement that the administration's plan is "desperate."

The Trump administration is also working on replacing Obama-era federal vehicle-emission standards.

"This will lead to more production because of this pricing and safety advantage, and also due to the fact that older, highly polluting cars, will be replaced by new, extremely environmentally friendly cars," Trump wrote in an additional tweet. "There will be very little difference in emissions between the California Standard and the new U.S. Standard, but the cars will be far safer and much less expensive."

"Many more cars will be produced under the new and uniform standard, meaning significantly more JOBS, JOBS, JOBS! Automakers should seize this opportunity because without this alternative to California, you will be out of business," he added.

"We embrace federalism and the role of the states, but federalism does not mean that one state can dictate standards for the nation," Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler said Tuesday.

The Auto Alliance, an industry group that contends the Obama-era standards were unrealistic, said it would take a closer look at the Trump administration's approach.

"Automakers support year-over-year increases in fuel economy standards that align with marketplace realities, and we support one national program as the best path to preserve good auto jobs, keep new vehicles affordable for more Americans and avoid a marketplace with different standards," said Dave Schwietert, the group's interim CEO and president.

Jeff Alson, who spent four decades at the EPA including in the Office of Transportation and Air Quality, said "there is no legal basis" for revoking the waiver.

"If the courts allow this unprecedented reversal, and the Trump EPA massively rolls back the federal Clean Car Standards, then President Trump will have done more to destroy the planet than any other president in history," said Alson, who is now with the Environmental Protection Network, a group of former agency employees.

Poster Comment:

I missed this tidbit. Trump is really upsetting the Left Coast, wrecking their control of the Ninth Circus and now taking away their power over car design across the country. He needs to go after their fuel formulation scam too since it is mostly meaningless and is just used to drive fuel prices up.

I love nature and the environment. I am unpersuaded that the California standards protect nature or the environment enough, incrementally, to permit one one one one single state to set the environmental policy for the entire nation.

I applaud California's launch of public banks. That can be a good thing (if the th th th they are run as a tight ship, like North Dakota does it).

And I applaud President's Trump returning of federal control over federal environmental standards to the federal government elected by the American p people as a whole, where it belongs.

CA's banks will have some crooked Dem scam built-in. Guaranteed.

Like you, I do admire what ND did with their bank. Of course, no one ever paid any attention to it until the shale oil windfall of huge wealth filled the Bank of North Dakota's coffers to overflowing.

What's surprising is that the farm-labor coalition produced a state monopoly on banking in North Dakota instead of Wisconsin and Minnesota, neighboring states where the farm/labor parties were much stronger politically.

Well, it is interesting. And I don't recall any other posters at LF or LP ever having that problem.

Of course, you could put Boris out of business with this little quirk. And some LF readers might start to like it as a prose style. For instance, that 'weird weird weirdly wrong' is kind of a nice phrase to people who like poetic prose.

If we put up with Boris, your posts shouldn't bother us.

There are various hacks going on now of commercial routers along with the already known ones with tablets/phones and desktop computers.

You should be check whether it occurs across platforms (iOS/Android/Windows/Mac), whether it occurs in one location (connected to one network or router), whether it occurs when you use a certain keyboard (wired or Bluetooth), whether it happens when you use voice dictation.

As with wrenching on cars or a doctor diagnosing illness, it's a process of eliminating the source of your problem. I'd make more suggestions on this but you haven't provided much info on what platform, what input device, and what location/network you are using.

If it is a virus or malware, it's a badly written one to indicate its presence and make you suspicious.

I would cast a glance at LF itself which used to be unencrypted but Neil did force it to start using encrypted HTTPS networking a few years back and you are the only poster here who seems to have this problem. So it probably isn't LF.

Do you get this problem when you are writing emails or creating other documents?

Nope. Nowhere else. Just here at this site. Not sure whether it happens on both computers I use. I know it happens on this one. I will check on the other one.

It doesn't happen here on this computer, as far as I can tell.

It doesn't happen here on this computer, as far as I can tell.

Assuming that both machines are running a modern Windows OS (like Win10 or Win8.5) and that you keep them protected with antivirus and keep them updated, then it seems likely that one has a malware that causes extra words in internet posts.

I did a cursory search and don't find anything that causes this kind of stuttery behavior but I didn't search all that far. It is always possible that it could be a bad keyboard. I think it is unlikely (mostly because it stutters entire words) but if you can swap the keyboard out and test it, that would help eliminate the keyboard as a source of the problem. And people do report minor keyboard stuttering problems that are eliminated entirely by using another keyboard.

Don't use the affected computer for any sort of sensitive work product or for online purchases or stuff like online banking. If it is malware, you don't want to give them anything they want.

This is the other computer, that doesn't seem to do that. The only problem with this one is that the key for the last letter of the alphabet doesn't work, so I have to type "s" when I mean "s", as in "sebra", "soological park", sephyr, crased, and everything else from A to "S".

It's irritating.

I don't know what to say.

Buy a new keyboard, test it on both computers to see how it works. Don't overspend ($40+) or try to cheap out too much (under $10). You can find decent non-gaming keyboards for around $20-$30.

When you get a new keyboard, plug it into your stuttery computer and see if it stops that problem for you.

I still don't have a theory as to why it only affects LF and no other apps or websites.

I blame it on the California emissions standards.
