Washington (AFP) - Former Republican governor Mark Sanford announced Sunday he is entering the race for his party's presidential nomination, in a long-shot challenge to President Donald Trump.

Sanford, who would be the third Republican to mount a primary bid against Trump, said he had decided to run because of the "astounding" debt and deficits piled up during his presidency.

"I think as a Republican party we have lost our way," he said in an interview with "Fox News Sunday."

"The president has called himself the king of debt, has a familiarity and comfort level with debt that I think ultimately is leading us in the wrong direction."

Sanford's decision comes amid reports that Republican officials in some states, including his home state of South Carolina as well as Nevada and Arizona, are considering canceling their 2020 primaries.

Asked whether he really thought he could defeat Trump, Sanford replied: "I'm saying, you never know."

"I'm listing my goals, my primary goals to say let's go out and force, or try and create a conversation on that which is not being talked about in this presidential cycle," he said.

"The thing that has been lacking in this debate has been an earnest and real conversation on debt and deficits in government spending."

Sanford was governor of South Carolina from 2003 to 2011, and served two separate stints in the House of Representatives, but lost a party primary in 2018.

Also running against Trump for the Republican nomination are Joe Walsh, a former Tea Party firebrand who served a single term in Congress, and William Weld, a former Massachusetts governor.

How about your Argentine stripper you left your wife and children for? At one time I thought this simpleton was a Conservative.

Asked whether he really thought he could defeat Trump, Sanford replied: "I'm saying, you never know." Pretty sure we know. Get behind Sanford and go back to the Bushes.

Perhaps he can hook up with McCain's wife. She's much closer than Argentina and has a lot of money. Sanford was mistaken when he announced running as a Republican, but he will correct that and run as a well credentialed Democrat when he returns from his latest affair...in Buenos Aries.

I'm not sure Sanford comes off any worse compared to Trump's own well-known personal life with models and porn actresses and being a playboy (when single) and such. Trump's better at it and done it for more decades. And Trump was never hypocritical about his behavior; Sanford was. Some people will inevitably point out that Trump was more honest about who and what he was in his endless dalliances and serial marriages than Sanford who went missing for a few days during a minor crisis while saying he was incommunicado while hiking the Appalachian Trail but was actually in the arms of his Brazilian model/whore. When it became public, Sanford was driven from office in disgrace, his wife divorced him and his sons hated on him publicly for betraying their mother and their happy home. A few years later, Sanford managed a win as a GOP congressman and served there as expected, very conservative, very much a Tea Party type congressman which fit his district in SC quite well. Until Sanford started criticizing Trump and it all went downhill when Trump fired back. So Sanford, like Amash in MI,

Sanford is unemployed now. He's pictured at a big food fair in NYC. So what else does he have to do besides run for prez? Maybe someone like a Soros cut-out flunky offered him some money or promises of a sweet sinecure at a big think tank. And the NeverTrumpers will like him a lot more than a flakey Tea Party type like Walsh or that Masshole Weld - who is closer to the NeverTrump faction politically - but they know he could never win a single state or even mount a decent challenge. A poor record as Masshole governor who did nothing to build up his own party in the state (just like Mitt), he has no real prospects to win a single primary, not even with his fellow-Massholes.

Walsh and Weld are zero threat to Trump, an MSNBC joke really. Sanford, as a real pol who was a good governor in SC, is more of a threat than either. But there won't be that many primaries for Sanford to compete in.

With Gary Johnson saying he won't run for the LP nomination again in 2020, that leaves an opening for a fresh GOP pol to move over to the LP to cancel some protest votes that might otherwise go to a Dem nominee. Sanford was always something of a Religious Right candidate so he's a little prim for the LP types but he could attract a few more of those types than Johnson ever could. Johnson said he won't run as LP nominee again but he might change his mind. He did run as an LP candidate for Senate in 2018 and came in third in that race (incumbent Dem 54%, GOP challenger 31%, Johnson 15%).

Sanford may be declared as a GOP candidate but it is worth recalling that Johnson started the same way in 2011, running for the 2012 GOP nomination. Then in December 2011, he switched to LP and grabbed their nomination easily. So Sanford could simply be making a little pit stop in the GOP primary before switching up to his real goal, the Libertarian Party nomination. The LP seems to have learned that if you run a real politician as head of your party, you get more votes. But retail pols do at least know how to handle crowds, hammer a message, pay attention to local critical constituencies, etc. Most prior LP nominees - other than Ron Paul - just talk in general terms about libertarian principles which only gets you the votes you could have had without campaigning at all.

I'm not sure how much the remaining Koch brother will spend on the LP and its nominee in 2020. But the recent death of the other Koch may affect how much the last active Koch will spend on the Kochtopus and its pet party, the LP.

The electorate grows weary of watching re-runs of Donnell & Ruby

If it turns into a contest of which GOP candidate can grab the most puzzay, Sanford has a good shot at the WH.
