Leon Haughton told The Washington Post that he was stopped at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on December 29.

  • He said he was jailed after US Customs and Border Protection agents on December 29 alleged that the three jars of honey he had brought back from Jamaica were actually meth.
  • He remained in jail for 82 days even though state and federal lab tests determined the honey was actually honey.
  • Haughton, a Jamaican native and green card holder with no prior convictions, told The Post that this was the first time he had been stopped by customs in the 10 years he had been traveling back and forth to visit his mother.

A Maryland man spent nearly three months in jail after US Customs and Border Protection agents at Baltimore's airport thought honey he had brought back from a trip to Jamaica was liquid meth.

Leon Haughton told The Washington Post that he was jailed for 82 days after officials at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport alleged that the three jars of honey were actually meth on December 29.

Twenty days after his arrest, a state police lab determined that the honey, which he bought at a roadside stand in Jamaica, was in fact honey, not methamphetamine. And so the felony drug charges were dropped. But he remained in jail because, as a green card holder, the felony charges had triggered an immigration detainer.

He wasn't released until charges were dropped entirely when a federal lab test confirmed there were no drugs in the honey.

Haughton, a Jamaican native and green card holder with no prior convictions, told The Post that this was the first time he had been stopped by customs in the 10 years he had been traveling back and forth to visit his mother.

Charging documents seen by The Post said that prior to Haughton's arrest, officers told Haughton that the honey bottles, which were clear, had gold-colored screw tops, and were labeled "honey," tested positive for methamphetamine.

The felony drug counts were dropped to misdemeanors on January 23, after lab tests first detected no drugs in the honey. But because an immigration detainer was triggered because of his green card status, Haughton remained in jail on misdemeanor charges instead of being granted bail.

Haughton's lawyer, Terry Morris, tried to contact US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to lift the detainer, but the government was in the midst of a shutdown and he was unable to reach anyone.

Haughton was finally released from jail on March 21, after 82 days spending incarcerated, when a federal test determined the bottles were in fact filled with honey.

Now he's trying to put his life back together. After losing his job while in jail, he is now working as a bread truck driver.

"I'm scared to even travel right now," Haughton told The Post. "You're innocent, and you can end up in jail."

Another "victory" in the War on Drugs.

The statists here should be thrilled!

"If you've done nothing wrong, then you have nothing to fear from cops", right guys?

Government is in the last resort the employment of armed men, of policemen, gendarmes, soldiers, prison guards, and hangmen.
The essential feature of government is the enforcement of its decrees by beating, killing, and imprisoning.
Those who are asking for more government interference are asking ultimately for more compulsion and less freedom.

I'm not a statist. I think that the man needs to be compensated from Deckards tax dollars. If he lives in the right state.

“Haughton, a Jamaican native and green card holder“

I don’t want my tax dollars paying a non American citizen, for anything. You think Jamaica would pay you, if you were falsely arrested, while visiting there?

We need to protect out borders. A non-America that travels here more than ten times, from a known drug shithole country? I expect our border agents to give MY REPUBLIC the benefit of the doubt and I personally don’t feel that a NON-AMERICAN deserves the same constitutional rights, as a citizen. He doesn’t like it, he can stay in fucking Jamaica.

I don’t want my tax dollars paying a non American citizen, for anything.

A green card, known officially as a Permanent Residence Card (PRC), is a document issued to immigrants under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), bestowing the rights, benefits, and privileges of permanently residing in the United States.

Individuals with green cards are known as Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) or green card holders.

There are an estimated 13.2 million green card holders of whom 8.9 million are eligible for citizenship of the United States.

Approximately 65,000 of them serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Government is in the last resort the employment of armed men, of policemen, gendarmes, soldiers, prison guards, and hangmen.

Since you pinged me to your post,I am assuming you think I am a Drug Warrior.

I'm not. IMHO,possession, but the sales, should be legalized for all drugs.

I restrict "free sales with no restrictions" because poisons are also drugs, and there are some people out there that care only for profit, and who better to sell poison to than someone who will never be able to testify against you?

If people knowingly want to destroy their minds and health, that's their business as long as taxpayers aren't required to subsidize their lifestyle or medical care.

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

1) They are still guests... a good guest will show the homeowner UNDERSTANDING, while visiting... or they can fucking go back from where they came from.

2) We shouldn’t have non-Americans in our military... and now I’m Glad TRUMP is not gonna allow them to squat little foreign bastards out, and anchor baby them into citizens.

You LIBERALterians are just as fucking filthy libtarded, as those intolerant asshole Democrats. Always have been, always will be. That’s why you kooks were evicted by the Wheelchair RINO.

So...bringing in honey is not being a "good guest"?

I guess by UNDERSTANDING you mean they should understand that they can be falsely arrested for carrying drugs when they really aren't?

Got it - they get the message that Amerika cares little about justice.

ABSOLUTELY. Had this person been an American, I’d say the persons constitutional rights out- TRUMP national security and safety... but a non-American can KISS MY FUCKING ASS... and if you don’t like that, you can KISS MY FUCKING ASS, TOO.
