According to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, one of his deputies was busted by his own department during an undercover investigation into child sex.

Derek Vandenham, 34, was allegedly “communicating to have sex with a 15-year-old” when officers arrested him. Lott claims that Vandenham was “working on-duty in [Lott’s] car” when he was taken into custody last week.

“That was something that made me sick to my stomach to know that one of my deputies that I trusted and that we put out here in this community was one of these monsters,” Lott said regarding the incident. Since his arrest, Vandenham has been let go from the force.

The investigation, called Operation Relentless Guardian, involved police disguising themselves as underage teens and talking to suspects online. When officers discovered they were talking to Vandenham, they alerted Lott who told them to continue speaking with him. In order to catch Vandenham, investigators switched the location of where they were sending other suspects.

The sting operation resulted in the arrest of four other men, some of whom allegedly traveled hundreds of miles across state lines to meet with who they assumed were underage girls. These men stand accused of soliciting sex from minors, sending nude photos, and sexual exploitation.

“This is probably one of the most frustrating occasions I think I’ve had, one of the most disgusting things that I’ve been having to deal with is have a deputy do something like this,” Lott told reporters later.

Following his arrest, Vandenham was charged with second-degree attempted criminal conduct with a minor and solicitation of a minor. Judge Mildred Rita Metts set Vandenham’s bond at $10,000 with the stipulation that he cannot access the internet for anything other than work or school-related activities. As of now, Vandenham is still in jail.

I like how Deputy Dawg was soliticing for child sex while sitting in the car with his own sheriff during a molester sting operation! The sheriff used his professional police skills to arrest the child molester sitting only 2 feet away from him. That sheriff really deserves an award, for irony if nothing else. (1 image)

Alleged Pedophile Cop Caught by His Own Department in South Carolina.
Meanwhile in other more salient news …
… a a massive online pedophile ring was busted by cops.

Five Americans among 184 people arrested; 230 abused children taken to safety.

An Internet pedophile ring with up to 70,000 members — thought to be the world's largest —has been uncovered by police, a security official said Wednesday.

The European police agency Europol said in a statement that "Operation Rescue" had identified 670 suspects and that 230 abused children in 30 countries had been taken to safety. More children are expected to be found, Europol said.

It said that so far 184 people had been arrested and investigations in some countries were continuing. Most of those detained are suspected of direct involvement in sexually abusing children.

They include teachers, police officers and scout leaders, AP reported. One Spaniard who worked at summer youth camps is suspected of abusing some 100 children over five years.

Europol director Rob Wainwright said Wednesday the ring, which communicated using an Internet forum, was "probably the largest online pedophile network in the world."

"Arrests so far have been made in Georgia and Connecticut. ICE continues to pursue the leads provided by Europol," she added.

The website was shut down following the three-year investigation, Europol said.

"The website operated from a server based in the Netherlands and, at its height, boasted up to 70,000 members worldwide," it added.

"It attempted to operate as a 'discussion–only' forum where people could share their sexual interest in young boys without committing any specific offences, thus operating 'below the radar' of police attention," Europol said.

"Having made contact on the site, some members would move to more private channels, such as email, to exchange and share illegal images and films of children being abused. Computers seized from those arrested have harvested huge quantities of child abuse images and videos," it added.

Police infiltrated site
The Europol statement said U.K. and Australian police infiltrated the site to identify the members who posed the greatest danger to children. Police also sometimes posed as children online as part of the investigation.

The statement said Europol analysts had cracked the security features of a key computer server at the center of the network which uncovered the identities of suspected child sex offenders.

And, after his arrest, the forum's Dutch administrator helped police break encryption measures that shielded users' identities, allowing police to begin their covert investigations.

"Europol subsequently issued over 4,000 intelligence reports to police authorities in over 30 countries in Europe and elsewhere, which has led to the arrests of suspects and the safeguarding of children," Europol said.

Wainwright said he was proud of the "exceptional work of our experts in helping police authorities around the world to record these groundbreaking results."

"The safeguarding of so many vulnerable children is particularly rewarding and demonstrates the commitment of our agency to make Europe a safer place for its citizens," he added.

The investigation was led by Britain's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center.

Peter Davies, of the center, said there would be more arrests as the investigations continue.

"Those who have been members of the site can expect a knock on the door in the very near future," he said.

In Britain, police said, the children involved were aged between 7 and 14.

Australian Federal Police commander Grant Edwards said suspects arrested in Australia ranged in age from 19 to 84 and used the Internet to "prey on children with anonymity, with subterfuge and with camouflage."

Children, Edwards said, "should be able to use the Internet safely, without fear of being approached or groomed by these online predators."

Great Job –LE – Great Job!

Three years it took them to find the info to bust 70,000 pedophiles operating in the open? That's a "Great Job"?

It is Interpol so it is pretty much a joke. Our own FBI isn't always so swift but they probably would have rolled up this operation in a few months, not years.

Hell, YEA. that definitely is a GREAT JOB - busting 70,000 pedophiles operating in the open.

That works out to 64 pedophiles per day - WONDERFUL

You seem to always be too quick to “jump the gun” and your constant urge for expediency reminds me of a story I once heard.

Perhaps you haven’t heard it so, I will share it with you …

A young bull and an old bull are at the top of a hill.

There are hundreds of cows grazing below. The young bull says, "Let's run down there and fuck a cow!"

The old bull says, "No, let's walk down and fuck them all."

If they had grabbed up a few pedophiles early on, then there is no reason to expect the others would go undetected.

Besides …

Investigative tasks relate to identifying physical evidence, gathering information, evidence collection, evidence protection, witness interviewing, and suspect interviewing and interrogation. These are essential tasks that must be learned and practiced with a high degree of skill to feed the maximum amount of accurate information into the investigative thinking process. Criminal investigation is aimed at collecting, validating, and preserving information in support of the investigative thinking process. Accordingly, it is important to learn to do these evidence collection tasks well.
“It is far better to do the job correctly than it is to do the job so quickly and perhaps be incorrectly performed” ~ Gatlin, The Almighty [with my gracious thanks to Deckard for the title].

It is Interpol so it is pretty much a joke.
It is no joke for me – I find nothing to laugh about.

Great Job –Interpol – Great Job!

Salute,

184 arrested out of 70,000. An arrest rate of 0.25% among a known target population. By comparison, Elizabeth Warren is considered 0.1% Cherokee, about half the arrest rate you're so impressed with.

Put down those pom-poms already.

If they had grabbed up a few pedophiles early on, then there is no reason to expect the others would go undetected.

You're just making excuses. No way the FBI would have needed 3 years for a sloppy pedo ring like that. It was based in Amsterdam, not exactly a hotbed of server security since almost everything is legal anyway and they turn away from doing much investigation of pedos and bestial types. Lots of hardcore stuff is very open there.

Great Job –Interpol – Great Job!

Can't you reserve your worship and adulation only for American cops? Did you have to go international? You're getting to be a police slut, handing out attaboys to any Pedro or Pierre that takes your fancy after some puny arrests.

Besides, it's the EU and they don't punish anyone very harshly. The worst perps they've uncovered are unlikely to serve more than a year or two. Most them will pay fines or get a few months in jail. The EU is very lax and don't want to pay for prisons.
