The subject of the song, Mony, was actually just a name on a building that Tommy James could see from his NYC apartment. The building belonged to the Mutual Of New York insurance company.

It's been remodeled a few times and the signage is no longer on the building but this is how the building looked when Tommy James saw it. This still is from the movie Midnight Cowboy. Wiki mentions the connection of the building to both the song and the movie.
