Saturday Night Live opened with a Meet the Press sketch that teased Republican leadership over their unimpeachable support of Donald Trump, even as the president’s actions conflict with their own political beliefs.
For instance, all three GOP members – Beck Bennett’s Mitch McConnell, Kate McKinnon’s Lindsey Graham and Cicely Strong’s Susan Collins – were opposed to tariffs against China until Trump’s attempts to enforce them.
“When you have a president who is a financial genius and a business Jesus like Donald Trump, you just got to trust him,” McKinnon’s Graham said. “This man has lost a hundred times more money than I have ever made.”
Meet the Press host Chuck Todd, played by Kyle Mooney, then asked the question, “What would it take for any of you to lose your support for Donald Trump?” Even if Trump was Muslim, committed obstruction of justice and colluded with Russia and divorced Melania and married Stormy Daniels, his GOP brethren would continue to support him, the three Republicans agree.
The one hypothetical where they’d lose support for the president: If he helped pass Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal.
Donald Trump makes a comment about his current momentum at a campaign stop in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday.
"You know what else they say about my people? The polls, they say I have the most loyal people. Did you ever see that? Where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters, okay? It’s like incredible," Trump said.
