I'm sure a physics whiz will correct this humble engineer if I'm wrong; at the South Pole the pendulum would rotate in 1 day as well, but in the opposite direction.
Exactly. What if the world was flat and spinning like a record? Maybe even tumbling through space, also. Would the pendulum behave the same? Hell, I certainly couldn't tell you one way or the other.
Well, toilets flush in the opposite direction. So if you put the pendulum in a toilet, then it would get clogged.
So all the raw sewage comes UP out of the pipes and into the bathroom? Good grief... that'd be one heckuva stinking mess...
Which is why so few people live south of the equator.

I've seen pendulum installations (Griffith Park Observatory in L.A. as I recall) where vertical dowels are set up around the perimeter of the arc each day and are knocked down in sequence by the pendulum, making the rotation obvious.
