When YouTube said earlier this year that it would “begin reducing recommendations of borderline content and content that could misinform users in harmful ways,” people praised the decision.

A certain ex-engineer called it a “historic victory” on Twitter and applauded the company for making such a move, possibly at a great expense to its business model. Which … ha. Among the types of videos YouTube said it would cut back on recommending was flat-Earth content. As in, videos peddling the idea that the Earth is not, as science has repeatedly proven, round. And while I’m all for quashing the spread of truly wrongheaded and potentially dangerous ideas, in the case of flat-Earth indoctrination, the damage has long since been done.

Researchers from Texas Tech University believe they’ve isolated YouTube videos as ground zero for the spread of flat-earth theories, The Guardian reports. Speaking with attendees at the biggest annual gathering of flat-Earthers both in 2017 and 2018, the research team found that people who fell into the world of the flat Earth were often those who were already spending time on YouTube watching other conspiracy videos (about 9/11, for example).

This feedback loop — where watching conspiracy videos leads to being shown more conspiracy videos, which in turn motivates creators to make more conspiracy content — was also cited by the above-mentioned ex-YouTube engineer. It’s that circle that has enabled flat-Earth content to thrive. Researchers said one of the most popular videos is a nearly two-hour-long piece that details myriad reasons why, if you’re smart enough to think beyond what has been crammed into your brain by society for your whole life, the Earth is so obviously flat.

Flat-Earthers might seem like a joke, but the jumps from “the Earth isn’t round” to “jet fuel can’t melt steel beams” to “science isn’t real” to “vaccines are harmful” are easy ones to make. (As noted by the TTU team and the ex-YouTube engineer, conspiracy theorists online tend not to buy into just one conspiracy.) Normalizing such ideas is dangerous.

In 2018, Logan Paul — the one who filmed the dead body, not the other one — was the keynote speaker at the second annual Flat Earth Conference in Denver, Colorado. Though he told a reporter at the event he does not actually believe the Earth is flat, Paul stood up in front of the audience and said he was “coming out of the flat-Earth closet” during a speech he was ostensibly paid to give.

Endorsing bogus theories in bad faith — but which are taken very seriously by others, and all the more so with the lending (or buying) of Paul’s name — makes Paul complicit in the spread of potentially dangerous flat-Earth nonsense and, more harrowingly, its co-ideologies. YouTube, with its years of doing the bare minimum to, well, do nothing to curb the spread of such ideas, is even more complicit. No amount of back-changes will right that.

Poster Comment:

HUH?? Which "people" "Praised the decision" -- and WHY?? ALL BS.

First of all, the "Logan Paul" mentioned in the article was exposed as an asset of the OPPOSITION. He was a mercenary, paid to pretend he was an advocate of FE, actually intending all along to make a mockery of Flat Earth theory. This is how feared Flat Earth theory now is, and how desperate these people are.

That said...

I wanted to post this "analysis" and lame attempt at damage-control and panic from a "respected" MSM source (aren't they all? HAH!.)

This reverse psychology, spin and messaging of this article and monopoly of the message is all they've got -- which is notably alarming, and patently false, presenting THE actual danger on several levels.

The argument is silly, hysterical panicky and intellectually dishonest. And still...it will actually be taken seriously. At face value.

Initially, we have the acknowledgement that YouTube/G00gle is "REDUCING," CENSORING, BANNING, AND OTHERWISE ELIMINATING what it terms as "borderline harmful" that "could mis-inform in many ways." (Meanwhile, ALL kinds of sick, twisted sexual/violence porno remains available online for FREE, and NOT considered "harmful" or "dangerous." But that's another story.)

"Misinformation" they say? Sorta like..."RUSSIA-GATE"?? "White-Privilege"?? "Toxic-Masculinity"? "Nothing-To-See-At-The-Las Vegas-Slaughter?")

Then there's the notion and hilarious attempt at portraying the false premise that Flat Earth theory is "dangerous." (How so? Really. Especially IF as claimed, it's so "kooky"?)

We also have NY Mag trying to conflate and convince its readers that Flat Earth as well as ANY and ALL "conspiracy Theories" like Vaccines (or Evolution, the 911 Operation, various gun-related mass shootings/proven theater like Sandy Hook, Chemtrails, Moon-Landings, or data that proves 0bama's lack of a Birth Cert) are "dangerous" and "harmful misinformation."

"Flat Earth -- REALLY?? Naah. No Sale. So what's really going on here?

How much integrity, credibility and commitment to the truth of ANY given subject is logically and honestly warranted when discussing the Mainstream Media? WHY should this article and analysis be trust TO ANY DEGREE??

And again -- IF you can explain YOUR own CT theory -- please advise the forum here as to ANY reason Flat Earth Theory OR ANY other aforementioned theories should be considered "dangerous" and "harmful". (OR...is the real "danger" that the MSM and GOVT Lies will no longer be believed??)

Like NY Magazine, are you and others REALLY saying: "I am a "victim" of "CTs!! They are traumatizing me. No other other opinions and theories about science, history, and...life itself should be aired!

By agreeing with YouTube and the same Mainstream Media that lies about EVERYTHING, aren't YOU "complicit"?

The Powers That Be are trying hard to restrict ALL investigations into any and ALL truth beyond the established "scientific and historical" narratives,

True.

I think it gets the attention it does from the general public because the flat earth movement, more than any other "alt" issue such as vaccines and 911, is proving just how incredibly gullible people can be. It is arguably demonstrating that freedom of speech must have limitations because there are no limits to what absurdities people will fall for.

No offense, but if ever there was an argument that freedom of speech and expression should be limited, the flat earth movement is making that argument better than any other issue contested by alt media sources. While 911 theories and vaccines injuries give people believing the mainstream narratives pause to suspect advocates are a bit loony, flat earth theory makes it a slam dunk to write off *anyone* who doesn't believe MSM. Arguably, flat earth theory promotion is destroying the credibility of anti-vaxxers and the 911 truth movement. If you are looking for a motive for a covert promotion of flat earth theory, that's certainly one.

I have wondered at the motivations of those who promote flat earth after watching a few of their videos promoting it (which I found completely absurd). I wondered if it was made by a post grad university student as an sociology experiment to see how far the theory could spread.

If people believing all manner of things because they hear about it on youtube, the solution is not to control the content, but to expand the critical thinking of the viewers.

Liberator, a number of times you've cited the perceived effort put forward to quash FE theory as a reason to give it credibility. To that I say it may all be part of the plan to draw attention to it. Bringing even negative attention to something will promote it, which is why people like AOC can win elections (and Fox News seems all to willing to put her on the front of their web page every other day, it seems).

So you really need to leave that publicity factor aside in deciding whether the earth is flat or not stick to the observable facts.

I've noticed there is some interest here in using geometry to debate Flattism. This is an excellent and entertaining look at the topic for those who managed to pass geometry. It is still quite good at illustrating the geometry if you're a bit rusty on your Euclid. Warning: it does have some rather withering British scorn aimed at various Flattard "theories". It also addresses direct air flights and airline routes, a point raised here by Pinguinite and others.

Two main, credible, Flat Earth proponents who through Scripture, Science, and Observations make their respective case for FE; Ron Skiba uses Scripture quite a bit on a number of other subjects as well:

Unless you commit to to exploring the cases many have (while ignoring the usual ubiquitous noise from the Gate Keepers of "Marble Earth," NASA Moon Landings, 911, Chemtrails, Vaccines, Evolution, and 0bama's Fake BC, then, the Gate Keepers and Shill have retained their house of cards and quicksand.

You should keep in mind and consider ALL of these "theories" are Secular/Luciferian and converge on one primary goal: DISCREDITING and MANIPULATING ALTERNATIVE TRUTHS and SYSTEMS, SCRIPTURE and GENESIS, a Supernatural God, His Savior/Son, His and Gospel and Miracles, the Heavenly/Hell Realm, Christian-Worldview (embraced until 500 years ago), and... His Creation and Purpose.

Quick Asides:

Q1: If the "Planet Earth" is spinning at 1000 MPH, then just HOW is NASA filming "stationary clouds" from "Outer Space"?

Q2: China claimed recent to land on the "far side of the Moon." And...sez it plans on establishing a Lunar "Camp" at its South Pole region. Do you believe any of it?

Q3: NASA just announce it "photographed" a "Black Hole." Timing is strange, don't you think? Moreover...do you believe IT?

This is so obviously flawed on at least a few fronts Liberator, but I'll focus on only one as if I do more than that, the strongest criticism will be lost in the shuffle.

In this model where the sun simply moves spins in a circle above the flat earth, the sun NEVER drops below the horizon or rise above it, as we see EVERY night and day. In fact, if the earth was flat and the sun did drop below the horizon, it would do so for the entire flat earth at virtually the SAME TIME which you've already agreed does not happen.

No offense, but a a first grader could grasp this reality. Literally. All it takes is a flashlight, a volley ball and a frisbee to do a simple demonstration.

In this model where the sun simply moves spins in a circle above the flat earth, the sun NEVER drops below the horizon or rise above it, as we see EVERY night and day.

It works. Rather well.

It's a one-dimension model, not an up and running, working definitive 3D or VR model by Ron Skiba (who btw is a very thorough with his material.) Nor is it to scale or calculated and set up to address and resolve the visual you require in order to fully (or partially) understand it.

The inability to understand the abstract construct of FE is as I've maintained from the beginning, difficult to almost impossible to conceive or perceive. We are ALL conditioned to reject this.

In fact, if the earth was flat and the sun did drop below the horizon, it would do so for the entire flat earth at virtually the SAME TIME which you've already agreed does not happen.

Nope. I've already seen the conceptual visual you seem to need to envision.

If I come across one of the visual concepts that may satisfy your objections of the curse of time, I'll certainly remember to share it. If you aren't, NP just the same. New info is pouring in every day that reinforces FE. YouTube is deleting the material just as quickly, unfortunately. "Harmfil and "dangerous" obviously /s.

I've posted several "Mother Ship" links already as well as other links. If the subject continues to interest you to some degree, great. If not, it is what it is.

This is so obviously flawed on at least a few fronts Liberator...

It's possible some of the points, arguments, visuals, and explanations aren't sufficient...or not fully understood.

The FE concept itself is far LESS "flawed" than the whole "round-earth," "still-earth" traveling at 1000 MPH and all the other logic that must be suspended as well as NASA lies and "Scientifism's" presumed "Science" in order to believe IT.

The entire FE theory become more exciting and far more probable every day.

With all due respect...

No the timing is not strange.

On the heels of the Chinese Moon Landing?

Announcement "newly" discovered planets (NASA artist rendering of heavily pixalated photos) in a Solar System thousand of Light Years away? That there's a threat of a Space War?

The XSpace coordination with NASA? The sudden acceleration of aired ISS and NASA footage? (Jst when MANY people are questioning the credibility of NASA, its budget, just what its been doing for the last 50 years, the so-called Moon Landings and "lost" technology, the constant fake photos and artist renderings??

Why do you think it [Black Hole] is strange?

For a hundred different reasons. The least of which would be reinforcement of the "deeper space" and purely theoretical darker realm and "reality" OF such a thing (unproven) as a "Black Hole."

And then there is the CERN project that is related to it (the supposed access into inter-dimensional portals. Have you taking a look at the project?)

This is the Goddess status outside of CERN. BTW.

Funny.

Try expanding your sphere of knowledge beyond the usual MSM sources. Try NOT to GAS about embarrassment. Those people are ignorant as well. Most are. It's not fully your fault you're in a conceptual/informational/intellectual rut...

But frankly, there is NO excuse now that there's an explosion of new info and truth blowing up out there. THIS is exactly the reason for blatant heavy-handed censorship, bannings and de-monetization on YouTube. I'm out there; you're obviously not. Look -- I'm just the messenger. If you or others are curious and I've kick-started your journey in seeking greater truth, great. If not... great.

Correct. key-phrase: "SIMPLE DEMONSTRATION." The basic flashlight demonstration you described is but a conceptual springboard.

The further truth: A First-Grader is by far more apt to understand the FE concept were it conceptualized, illustrated, and covered via similar software... WITHOUT the well-established, Earth-is-Round indoctrination and religious-like dogma.

It's not a question of scale. Regardless if the sun is elevated off of the earth by a factor of 20% of the flat earth diameter or 10,000% of the FE diameter, this model that explains seasons clearly does not provide for the sun ever dropping below the horizon.

Let me complete the context and full thought, which I erroneously assumed was expressed based on my previous observations:

"The inability to understand the abstract construct of FE is as I've maintained from the beginning, difficult to almost impossible to conceive or perceive....AS A RESULT OF a Lifetime of mental imprinting, commercial & "educational" indoctrination, and ultimately for many -- an impenetrable wall of acceptance based on Cognitive Dissonance."

AS A RESULT OF a Lifetime of mental imprinting, commercial & "educational" indoctrination,

I would say what you describe is far more common in theological beliefs which are generally based on minimal observation of physical evidence and more on abstractions than is the case with conclusions about our physical world and universe which is -- or should be -- based on observation and subject to experimentation.

You call the global earth narrative a grand lie, pushed as a conspiracy.

Assuming the earth is flat, what motive would the PTB's have in pushing a global earth hoax? How would that help them achieve any particular devious result, and what would that result be?

IOW, what's the motive for pushing such a severe lie that would deviate so enormously from one another?

I'd still like to know where to point my telescope to observe another flat planet - for some reason, all the other ones seem to be roughly spherical.
Why are we so damn special?

C'mon, using a telescope is downright Satanic.

I think you'll find that the vast majority of Flat Earthers think that the Flat Earth is the entire universe. The sun and the moon are special cases, the other planets and the stars are kind of an illusion set in the sky of Flat Earth.

Flat Earth = Flat Universe. And Flat Universe isn't just geocentric; it's all there is. And you're in league with the Devil if you believe anything else.

You call the global earth narrative a grand lie, pushed as a conspiracy.

A flat earther's greatest fear is sphere itself!

Nah, I didn't think of it but it seemed apropos.

Assuming the earth is flat, what motive would the PTB's have in pushing a global earth hoax?

I'd like to know how a magnetic field is generated in a flat earth.

Oh wait - I found the answer!

Do Flat Earthers have their own explanation for the Earth’s magnetic field?

Tsk, tsk, why it's so obvious! For all you nonbelievers there is a simple explanation.

I suppose you have never heard of radial magnetism.

How is there a magnetic field? Magnets can't be unipolar

While it's true that unipolar magnets can't exist, this isn't a problem for the Flat Earth. This is because ring magnets, which are shaped like (you guessed it!) a flat disk, are capable of having radial magnetization. In a radial magnet, one magnetic pole is at the center and other other is at all points on the edge of the magnet. A magnet like this can be found in loudspeakers, and perfectly replicates what is found on the Earth.[1]

See I told you there's a perfect explanation. If you take a round disk magnet the North pole is in the middle of it and the magnetic lines radiate out from the middle to form the South pole on the edge of the magnet, simple physics.

It's hilarious reading this shit, I think 90% don't believe a word of it but like to goad others into preposterous non-sensical crap, and they fucking fall for it.

I can't believe I'm even wasting my time responding to this.

Government is in the last resort the employment of armed men, of policemen, gendarmes, soldiers, prison guards, and hangmen.
The essential feature of government is the enforcement of its decrees by beating, killing, and imprisoning.
Those who are asking for more government interference are asking ultimately for more compulsion and less freedom.

The sun and the moon are special cases, the other planets and the stars are kind of an illusion set in the sky of Flat Earth

Orwell said pretty much the same thing in "1984".

Winston: "But the whole universe is outside us. Look at the stars! Some of them are a million light-years away. They are out of our reach forever."

"What are the stars?" said O'Brien indifferently. "They are bits of fire a few kilometers away. We could reach them if we wanted to. Or we could blot them out. The earth is the center of the universe. The sun and the stars go round it."

Think of how useful it is to certain elements in power to have a citizenry so ignorant.

As George Carlin pointed out, think of how stupid the average person is then realize that half the population is dumber than that.

It is encouraging that the Youboob debunkers of Flat Earth get a lot more views (and ad money) than the hard-pressed Flat Earthers themselves. Some of these people resort to begging for gas money, or car parts, or to get their Flatearthmobile (the Truth Bus) running, or to buy another crapmobile and pay off some tickets and pay for registration/insurance on a new crapmobile, then money to go to the Denver Flat Earth convention, and then going anyway without any money and, eventually, a call from jail in Denver. Watch this fine specimen's videos. He actually published this stuff:

The Flat Earth tribe is a sad sad little bunch. That guy and his wife are like something from the old American Gothic painting.

You what absolutely amuses me? The absolute agony and heartburn "CTs!!!" and the truth spilling out have ALWAYS caused you. Your reaction to Flat Earth has been...THE best.

The biggest truth: You've been a shill for uber-Statist policy, opposing any and every theory that exposes and indicts your Masonic system. Come on -- we know what you are, who you are. You didn't really believe your diversions fooled many, did you?

The capacity of the human mind to believe things that are not true is enormously underrated. As children, we are fully indoctrinated to believe what our parents tell us. Even when children rebel from parents, it's in the context of what they were taught to believe.

It's the reason why geographic regions are full of people that often adhere to one religious faith over another. It's why people have their various political ideologies as well. We see it right here on LF and most other political forums.

Most info children are indoctrinated with teaches them to survive, not just physically but also socially, so it's beneficial. But much of it is based upon beliefs that are in error. Supposedly people believed at one time in our history that tomatoes were poisonous. They are not, of course, but as the story goes, plates in the day were often made of lead, and tomato acid would dissolve the lead which would be ingested causing lead poisoning, so they blamed the tomatoes. While it was not true, until they f igured out it was the plates and not the tomatoes, avoiding tomatoes was a wise thing to do, even though the perceived reason for avoiding them was incorrect.

It's not a question of intelligence or stupidity, but what we are taught to believe and what we choose to believe. And for me it's the reason why God judging us on what we actually believe within our human capacity makes no sense at all. It's not what we believe, but what we do with what we believe. I know it's probably criticized as "relativism" in religious circles, but those critics readily admit it's what is in the heart that matters.

Well, you know me - I'm one of the biggest CT freaks on the site, but...

...But...I'm sure TooObvious wil find it in his Masonic heart to absolve you.

Let me understand this exercise of mental contortionism:

SOMEHOW you concede NASA is bull-crap and the Van Allen Radiation Belt is a yuge problem, BUT we somehow still "Landed a space craft the Moon"?

Somehow you believe 911 was BS, Chemtrails are a GOVT conspiracy, Climate Change is also baloney, GOVT False Flags are routine...but SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY, photoshopped/CGI pix of "Earth" and all the planets and Milky Ways from gazillions of miles are "proven"?

Is it also "proven" that we have a working, functioning *credible* Mainstream Media devoted to Truth? Same question of the School System and colleges? What of the credibility of "Science"?

Is "Evolution" also "Truth"? OR is "Creation"? One of them is a lie. The same cult of "Science" that claims "Evolution" (an actual "CT") = "Truth also insists that the Earth = "Globe."

The hardest thing for most people is to fully commit. Either we're being programmed and lied to. OR...We're not. Which is it?

There's no straddling the fence on this one.

For an obedient Gate-Keeper like TooObvious, obfuscation and diversion in the name of a US GOVT gone full-rogue and full-theater -- is his quest, job, his religion.

Our Institutions have been and are still lying. Plain and simple. They don't half-hijack institutions. They hijack *entire* institutions and with them, ideas and truth.

What doesn't bother me: People who can't understand, are unable to understand Flat Earth.

What is bothersome:

People who give ANY credence to the same Institutions who lie about everything.

As the State/GOVT/Institutions lie, via their MSM, NASA, the UN, and "The Sciences" with respect to, say, Gender, Evolution, and "Outer Space" -- THEIR select "Truth," which ostensibly are nothing but "Conspiracy Theories," YOUR "Truth", *their "Truth" is die-cast. Many from birth.

“The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.”

Far more provocative a thought than the forum deserves.

This single, "simple" assertion could well warrant its own post and thread...

But because the concept will give too many here a migraine, cause a panic, or cause someone's statist overlords to demand he change the subject, it won't.

;-)

A flat Earth is needlessly complicated...

And therein lies is one major truth on the matter.

...doesn't work within the physics that God gave us the brains to understand.

Nnnnnn....naw. Not true at all. On either count. Of course, IMHO.

The "physics" of "Round Earth" is especially not "proven"; Just as the "physics" that determine the "age" of rocks/fossils, dinosaurs, Universe isn't.

Theories or "Evidence" /= "Proof."

Theories are just that. Whether Globe/Flat Earth, "Evolution"; "Outer Space"; alleged "global shape" of planets.

"Evidence" is based on consensus of value. Such as, your paper $20 bill is "evidence" of a value -- but it requires consensus, doesn't it? But it is not "proof" of value.

Oooh -- a chart and diagram and everything!! Even an official name: "radial magnetism." So it must be true!!

THIS is pure theory. What makes this particular source valid, ergo "scientific" dogma?

NOT PROVEN. NO ONE KNOWS THE NATURE/SOURCE OF "MAGNETISM."

But...if it satisfies YOUR "scientific" curiosity, it'll do. And THAT is all that matters.

THIS is quite a conspiracy theory. (And now TooObvious is taking his third cold shower of the day.)

Hmmm... Let's float the Mother of All CTs -- FLAT EARTH -- A conspiracy so unbelievable, that it will serve as THE counter conspiracy theory that manages to wipe out ALL OTHER "CTs"!! Brilliant!! It'll work like a charm...

...because NASA and it's photos, Moon Landing and "lost technology to return there" are credible, "Evolution" from Apes is actually how it all happened because all the Science school books claim it to be the truth.

Guys...come on.

I have just now scooped my brain out like a melon. And filled the space with "Moon Rock," aka Petrified Wood.

Carlin was more than a comedian - he was a wise man whose take on politics was spot on. For example:

"The limits of debate in this country are established before the debate even begins, and everyone else is marginalised and made to seem as either a communist, a kook, some sort of disloyal person or a conspiracy theorist - Something that shouldn't even be entertained for a minute that powerful people might get together and have a plan. DOESN'T HAPPEN. You're a kook and a conspiracy buff"

Bill Hicks was another politically aware comedian.

Both these guys were full-blown conspiracy theorists, or in other words - always questioning the official narrative.
