There are now as many Americans who claim no religion as there are evangelicals and Catholics, a survey finds

For the first time "No Religion" has topped a survey of Americans' religious identity, according to a new analysis by a political scientist. The non-religious edged out Catholics and evangelicals in the long-running General Social Survey.

Ryan Burge, a political scientist at Eastern Illinois University and a Baptist pastor, found that 23.1% of Americans now claim no religion.

Catholics came in at 23.0%, and evangelicals were at 22.5%.

The three groups remain within the margin of error of each other though, making it a statistical tie. Over 2,000 people were interviewed in person for the survey.

A growing number of Americans reject organized religion

"Religious nones," as they are called by researchers, are a diverse group made up of atheists, agnostics, the spiritual, and those who are no specific organized religion in particular. A rejection of organized religion is the common thread they share.

"It is the first time we have seen this. The same questions have been asked for 44 years," Burge told CNN.

The meteoric rise of religious nones began in the early 1990s and has grown 266% since 1991, he said.

Burge estimates that 'No Religion' will be the largest group outright in four to six years.

The reasons why the numbers exploded

Experts still debate the factors behind this wave of Americans declaring no religion.

One reason could be the internet, says Nick Fish, the president of American Atheists. It provides a place for nonbelievers to find each other.

"The ease of access to the internet helped build communities where they didn't feel alone," he says.

Robyn Blumner, executive director of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science, sees the change as a generational trend driven by millennials.

"We are seeing the rise of a generation of Americans who are hungry for facts and curious about the world," she says.

They are an underrepresented group

Whatever the causes, the non-religious represent a growing constituency. Yet this demographic is greatly underrepresented in Washington's halls of power. There is not a single open atheist amid the most diverse Congress in history, according to a Pew study.

The Congressional Freethought Caucus's 10 members try to represent non-theist interests while protecting the secular character of government.

"This growing group of Americans can feel like there is at least some people in Congress who believe they matter." says the co-chair and founder, Rep. Jared Huffman of California.

HUH??

What "Reason" would a hard-core Atheist seek in a Universe made of Everything, Made by No One, for NO reason, and NO purpose?

The "generation" spoken about by Robyn ("Science-is-our-god!") Blummer demonstrates the same narcissism of her contemporaries and Richard Dawkins, lovers of selves, seeking to be their own "god." They seek anything BUT "Reason." Ergo, they will follow the rest of the un-wise and un-humble over the cliff into the pit of Hell.

It's a shame -- Truth abounds Everywhere. Unfortunately....Misery is the handmaiden of Hubris and Vanity.

The Narrow Way

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it."

Matthew, 7:13-14 New King James Version (NKJV)

George Carlin. Funny. Right quite a bit. But totally missed the most important mark in his sad life.

George Carlin is now on the OUTSIDE looking into Heaven. For all Eternity.

"Religion" is NOT The Gospel. The doctrine of Jesus Christ was NOT about "Religion" either.

I guess Carlin didn't get it. And neither do far too many :-(

There are more Godless Americans than Christians ... found that 23.1% of Americans now claim no religion.

Ah. So the author thinks that if you claim no religion you don't believe in God. What an asshole.

"The Pew Religious Landscape survey reported that as of 2014, 22.8% of the U.S. population is religiously unaffiliated, atheists made up 3.1% and agnostics made up 4% of the U.S. population."

Godless Americans? 3.1%.

AND ALSO...

The author is not only dishonest, a fake, and an A-hole, he's advancing his propaganda/agenda under the guise of "political scientist" while calling himself a "Baptist pastor."

"Scientist" I can believe.

This guy is as much a "Baptist pastor" as I am a "RCC pope."

Notice they include those who are agnostic, who are just "spiritual", or who don't identify as a member of an organized religious group.

I don't think people are any more irreligious than they have been since the Sixties. They're just being more honest about their lack of connection to organized religion. And they have no interest in letting organized religions persuade them to join up.

Yep. 3% atheist, 97% believe in God. This is not news.

Perception is everything.

Because of repetition, it was reported in a Poll that people believe 23% of the population is "Gay."

Best Propaganda = Repetition Ad Nauseam

Correction: There are more godless Christians than those who believe in God. I actually overheard somebody yesterday state they don't read the papers nor watch the news and presume the world to be a beautiful place and everything is just rosy. In these dangerous times we live in, we cannot afford to be innocent because non are righteous and all have sinned. With this said, we cannot deny that the end is near and that nothing is as it seems. We are living in the calm before the storm and in for a nightmare of a rude awakening.

There are more godless Christians than those who believe in God.

This sez more about labels and an expressed "I inherited my religion" than anything else.

I actually overheard somebody yesterday state they don't read the papers nor watch the news and presume the world to be a beautiful place and everything is just rosy. In these dangerous times we live in, we cannot afford to be innocent because non are righteous and all have sinned.

Don't they say, "Ignorant is Bliss"?

Bliss is costly. Ignorance of (God's) Law is no justification for not following the Law. Nor should ignorance be projected as some kind of "innocence."

No one is innocent as you note; we are ALL Guilty.

We are living in the calm before the storm and in for a nightmare of a rude awakening.

"Calm" is relative. The sense "out there" seems to one of measured anticipation of Something Big. Like..."A Rude Awakening."

Folks need to open their heart to the truth. "Thieves in the night" isn't a drawn out process.
