House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is this years Profile in Courage Award recipient, it was announced Sunday.
The award, which has been called the Nobel Prize for public figures, was bestowed on the California Democrat for her work in passing the Affordable Care Act and helping her party to retake the House majority during the midterm elections, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation said in a news release.
She will be recognized for putting the national interest above her partys interest to expand access to health care for all Americans and then, against a wave of political attacks, leading the effort to retake the majority and elect the most diverse Congress in our nations history, the foundation said.
Former Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy praised Pelosi as the most important woman in American political history.
A congresswoman since 1987, Pelosi is the only woman to ever serve as speaker.
Shell be presented with the award by Kennedy, the only surviving child of former President John F. Kennedy, and her son Jack Schlossberg at a ceremony May 19.
Other recipients of the award include former presidents Barack Obama, George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford.
