A student who contracted measles has infected 21 other people with ties to a Jewish school in New York City, according to health officials. The incident comes amid a measles outbreak in Brooklyn that has sickened more than 100 people.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene says 133 cases of measles have been reported since the outbreak began in October.

The majority of the people infected reside in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Borough Park and Williamsburg.

The first case reported was a child who was unvaccinated and contracted measles while on a trip to Israel, according to the health department.

In December, the health department issued a mandatory directive that schools in selected zip codes in Borough Park and Williamsburg exclude students who had not received the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccines.

But the Yeshiva Kehilath Yakov in Williamsburg "went out of compliance" and allowed an unvaccinated student with measles to attend school, according to the health department.

Twenty-one of the 87 confirmed measles cases in Williamsburg "are connected to" the school, the health department said. Yeshiva Kehilath Yakov is now "working with the health department to prevent further exposures," health department spokesman Michael Lanza told NBC News on Friday.

“The increase in measles cases in Orthodox Jewish communities of Brooklyn demonstrates the importance of getting children vaccinated on time to prevent measles and not put other children at risk,” acting Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot said in a statement.

The health department has been spreading the word about the MMR vaccine in Orthodox Jewish communities by reaching out to health care providers and schools, putting ads in newspapers and handing out literature, the department said.

"There has been an increase in vaccination rates in these communities since the Health Department announced the outbreak, but many more children should receive the MMR vaccine to stop measles transmission," according to the department.

Debates in the Orthodox Jewish community over vaccinations stem from Torah teachings that followers should not cause the body any damage since it is a gift from God.

Some see the small risks associated with vaccines and the risk of contracting diseases that have "been largely eliminated" as equal, and so subscribe to the Talmudic dictum that translates to “in some cases of doubt, better to sit and do nothing,” according to Rabbi Yehuda Shurpin, content editor for Chabad.org.

“It says in the Torah 'V'nishmartem Meod L'nafshoseichem,' that a person must guard their health,” Rabbi David Niederman of north Brooklyn said, according to a health department statement.

“It is abundantly clear on the necessity for parents to ensure that their children are vaccinated, especially from measles," he said.

Rabbi Avi Greenstein, executive director of the Boro Park Jewish Community Council, said "we need to take away the lesson of how important it is for every one of us to avail ourselves of modern medicine and not to trust in herd immunity, but rather to follow the vaccination schedule recommended by medical professionals to protect our families and our entire community.”

Measles causes fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and rashes and with complications, can cause swelling of the brain and death, according to the New York City Department of Health.

The virus is highly contagious and remains that way on surfaces for two hours. Symptoms usually don't present until 10 to 12 days after a person is exposed.

The New York City outbreak has not led to any deaths, but 10 people have been hospitalized, including one who was in the intensive care unit but has since recovered.

On the other side of the country, 71 measles cases have been confirmed in Clark County, Washington.

Biochemical Engineer Drops Bombshell Facts About Measles & The MMR Vaccine In Washington

What nobody is acknowledging is the fact that these outbreaks are happening in highly vaccinated populations. Vaccination coverage of MMR has not dropped, so why is the media saying that parents aren’t vaccinating and therefore measles is making a comeback? Washington State has a very high vaccination coverage for MRR.  See for yourself, here.

Furthermore, let’s not forget that hundreds of children have died from the measles vaccine. According to a MedAlerts search of the FDA Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) database as of 2/5/19, the cumulative raw count of adverse events from measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines alone was: 93,929 adverse events, 1,810 disabilities, 6,902 hospitalizations, and 463 deaths. What is even more disturbing about these numbers is that VAERS is a voluntary and passive reporting system that has been found to only capture 1% of adverse events.

These recent outbreaks happen overwhelmingly to those who were not vaccinated. For instance, that 6yo boy in Oregon whose parents never got him vaccinated for tetanus -- living on a farm -- and he got it. He spent 47 days in intensive care and suffered terribly.

ArsTechnica: Boy spent 47 agonizing days in ICU with tetanus. Parents still refuse vaccines

The MMR vaccine has been around since the Fifties. However, what we call MMR vaccine is not consistent over that period because they have improved it over time and changed its formulation. Many people who were vaccinated before 1960 did not get lifetime immunity from it, only immunity that lasted 10-15 years and then faded away, leaving them vulnerable as adults.

I have a somewhat personal stake in this because I've worried over the years that I never had a record as a child of receiving the mumps vaccination. So I worry that mumps could pop up and make me deathly ill or even kill me. Getting mumps or any of these childhood diseases is very serious in older adults.

So I was talking to a public health nurse recently and I finally took a flu shot, mostly because I'm afraid of the new late-season flu that has killed a number of people. It's a sudden-onset flu that hits like a ton of bricks in about an hour and has killed a number of people. The current season's flu vaccine doesn't protect against it directly but the vaccine grants limited immunity so you won't get sick with this latest and more nasty strain of flu. So I finally got a flu shot.

CBS Denver: A New, More Powerful Strain Of Flu Has Just Hit Colorado

So I was talking to the nurse about MMR and my lack of mumps vaccination and she conveyed that some of her supply of MMR will be expiring next week. It's still considered effective for anyone to use but these have short expiration periods and she'll have to throw it out and so she's willing to give me an MMR shot for free. So, being a total tightwad, I'm going to go down and get a free MMR shot early next week. And this will be the newer type of MMR vaccine, not the far less effective one that was used back in the Fifties when I was a baby and which is somewhat likely to no longer offer me any real protection, especially from measles.

So I guess we'll find out next week whether an MMR shot will make me autistic. If it kills me and I suddenly stop posting here at LF, you can always say, "I tried to warn that fool."

The problem with the typical paranoid schizophrenic government haters, is their inability to see how their choices (commonly referred to as their constitutional rights) effects or VICTIMIZES OTHERS.

I’m all for not being told or forced into vaccinations... as long as you move your Paultard asses to some jungle, outside of the USA... and there you can live like a caveman.

You might want to read that CBS Denver link that I posted above.

You don't usually have a late-season hardcore flu like this.

I live in Flu Central currently, more flu cases than anywhere else in CONUS. 3 people have died from the regular flu that has been around since Thanksgiving in a low-density area. Lots of others hospitalized, especially if they have other chronic health problems. You hear some stories of people coming down with it, going to bed, and not waking up the next morning. And some of the victims are otherwise healthy people in the prime of life, like in their thirties.
