WASHINGTON — Roger J. Stone Jr., a longtime informal adviser to President Trump who has spent decades plying the dark arts of scandal-mongering and dirty tricks to help influence American political campaigns, was arrested early Friday after an indictment was unsealed in the special counsel investigation.

Mr. Stone was charged with seven counts, including obstruction of an official proceeding, making false statements and witness tampering, according to the special counsel’s office.

Good morning, all!

More excellent news from Washington!

Follow up on a previous story:

Roger Stone's Legal Fund
"...George Stephanopoulos of ABC's "This Week" asked Roger if he would testify against The President, Roger was very clear: "There is no circumstance where I would testify against The President.."

Perhaps having Paul Manafort as a cellmate/prison husband will convice Woger to squeal??

Instead of taking bets - I'll encourage everyone to waste your money by sending it here:

I wonder what diversion the toad will come up with today?

Like so many other charges Mueller has brought, it seems most of these, at least, relate to things that occurred in the course of the investigation that relate to the investigation itself and not the subject of the investigation.

Lying to investigators seems to be the most common charge Mueller has brought. Corsi has been accused of it, and he's responded with a criminal complaint against the Mueller team for attempting to compel him to commit perjury under oath. Is this the tactic that the Mueller team has employed against everyone else?

Witness tampering.... Could that be doing something as innocuous as calling an associate to find out what's going on as soon as he got wind that that person appeared to give a statement that conflicted with Stone's recollections?

Wouldn't doubt it.

"innocuous"? What has been reported about the basis for this charge suggests the actions taken by Stone were far more dangerous. Especially since Credico has already testified to these facts. Roger Stone was indicted on a witness tampering charge for his alleged attempts to sway radio host Randy Credico's story before he testified to Congress — even tapping into language from mob movies and citing disgraced President Richard Nixon, who Stone once worked for.

Credico is identified as "Person 2" in the indictment — one of the people who was communicating with Stone about what Assange knew — his lawyer, Martin Stolar, confirmed to CNN.

Stone has claimed that Credico, a progressive New York political activist and radio host, served as his backchannel to WikiLeaks during the 2016 campaign. Credico has denied that he acted as an intermediary.

Over text message, Stone told Credico:

"'Stonewall it. Plead the fifth. Anything to save the plan' ... Richard Nixon," prosecutors said. Stone warned Credico he would get "indicted for perjury" because he could contradict Stone's testimony. "And if you turned over anything to the FBI you're a fool," Stone told Credico later via text.

Multiple times, Stone told him to do a "Frank Pentangeli," a reference to a "The Godfather: Part II" character who feigned innocence to Congress.

He also called him "a rat" and a "stoolie," prosecutors say. He threatened to take away Credico's dog — a fluffy white therapy pet named Bianca who even later went with Credico into his grand jury appearance — and told him "Prepare to die [expletive]," prosecutors wrote.

https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/roger-stone-mueller- indictment/h_44e55a498795f2bd7bc001f071a21b26 Elements of the Offense State statutes and federal law breakdown witness tampering in slightly different ways. It can vary from altering a witness' testimony no matter the means, to only criminalizing outright intimidation, coercion, or use of force. What is the same in all cases is that the government must prove all elements of witness tampering beyond a reasonable doubt for a conviction. Common elements include: Defendant attempted to make another person testify falsely, withhold testimony, or not testify or otherwise come forward with information. Defendant had reason to believe the other person was witness or may have relevant information. The information was relevant to a crime or civil action. An actual obstruction is not necessary as an element of proof. It is enough that the defendant performed the action to tamper with a witness. Unlawful Conduct Toward a Witness Witness tampering can take many forms, and will vary based on whether the proceeding is under state or federal law. It’s best not to think of prohibited actions as a narrow list, but any action that falls into the following categories: Physical Force: Using any type of physical force to keep a witness from testifying is prohibited, and commonly results in felony charges. Confinement is considered a use of force. Threatened Physical Force: Words, tone and gestures can combine such that threats of physical force constitute unlawful conduct. Shaking your fist at someone while saying you will knock them senseless if they testify against you, would likely qualify as witness tampering. Corrupt Persuasion: Prohibited behavior includes persuading a witness to change their testimony, and blackmailing or bribing a witness and attempts to keep a witness from testifying. https://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-charges/witness-tampering.html
