A New York resident has developed a bacterial infection after drinking raw milk that likely came from a farm in Pennsylvania, the New York Department of Health announced this week.

The resident, who has not been identified, was infected with RB51 -- a strain of the Brucella abortus bacteria, according to New York health officials -- after he or she drank raw milk that officials believe came from the Miller's Biodiversity Farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. On its website, Miller's says it's a “private food club” that “allows its members access to buying food directly from farms and other vendors, bypassing the supermarket.”

The farm has been quarantined by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA). This means it’s barred from selling any of its products made from raw cow’s milk while officials continue to investigate.

That said, pasteurized dairy products from the farm “have been deemed safe,” the PDA said in a statement.

“Consumers who purchased unpasteurized cow’s milk or dairy products from Miller’s Biodiversity Farm in Lancaster County should immediately discard those products,” the PDA added.

Raw, unpasteurized milk can contain bacteria that can cause brucellosis, and a variety of other harmful diseases, such as listeriosis, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, typhoid fever and tuberculosis, according to the New York Department of Health. Milk is pasteurized -- heated to a certain temperature -- to kill any harmful bacteria.

Specifically, symptoms of brucellosis include fever, sweats, weight loss, fatigue, joint pain and headache, among other signs.

“Symptoms may appear up to six months after exposure. In severe cases, infections of the bones, joints, reproductive organs, central nervous system or lining of the heart may occur. The infection also can cause fetal loss in pregnant women,” the New York Department of Health explained.

The New Yorker infected with RB51 is “doing well” the health department said, noting he or she is the “third individual infected with RB51 due to raw milk consumption confirmed in the United States in the last two years.” The other two lived in Texas and New Jersey, respectively, and were diagnosed in 2017, the health department said.

"Raw milk products can contain harmful bacteria which can pose serious health risks. Pasteurization standards are in place to protect the public from diseases which are transmitted in raw milk and dairy products,” New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker said in a statement. “It is critical for New Yorkers to understand the dangers of these products and avoid their consumption."

I agree with your ideals on this subject, only for this reason. Because I know for a fact that people that get sick from unregulated food, will inevitably cost tax payers tax money to fund medical expenses or unpaid hospital bills. I will say this though, if we just let people die of sickness, that can’t fund their own health care, then I’d not be on your side. Let the fools snort pounds of heroin, drink sewage, who gives a shit what they eat or drink AS LONG AS THEY AREN’T VICTIMIZING THE POPULACE.

That’s the rub, the Paultards won’t acknowledge how an unregulated anarchist society victimizes others in a libtard minded, soon to be socialist society.

that can’t fund their own health care

That can't or won't?

What about those who buy a second car rather than health insurance? Take a trip to Europe? Dine out every evening?

Many young, healthy people think they don't need health insurance -- partly because people like you will take care of them anyways.

We have Medicare for the elderly and Medicaid for the truly needy. They rest can purchase insurance, pay cash (or work out a payment plan for services) or do without.

We're not socialists. Not yet.

Get ready, it’s coming. Every time and old conservative dies, a snowflake is born. Each new generation is being indoctrinated into socialism and PUSSIFIED, via education, MSM and Hollywood.

It’s impossible to stop the socialist train.

We will never make people that make poor choices suffer for those choices... so we will always be victimized by poor life choices. The only reason I support drug laws and federal food regulations.

Three people have gotten sick from raw milk... over a 2 year period ... throughout the USA. Oh the humanity!!!

I don't know what percentage of the US population is into raw milk, but it's obviously big enough to have made news a number of times, so a 3rd person nationwide in 2 years getting sick from raw milk -- even assuming that's how the person got infected -- is really a non-news issue. And if raw milk does have benefits then it may well be that they outweigh the risks.

And it's not like the regulated food market is totally safe either. How many times have people gotten sick or even died on foods that DO go through regulated channels? It's rather frequent.

I've never had any myself, but for those who prefer it and know the risks, more power to them.

Because I know for a fact that people that get sick from unregulated food, will inevitably cost tax payers tax money to fund medical expenses or unpaid hospital bills.

What about the people who get sick on regulated food? By some measures, Americans eat some of the most unhealthy food in the world. We have Monstanto making GMO crops of all types, and a lot is tainted with glyphosate, which is argued to be cancer causing. We got huge amounts of white sugar being consumed, which is not good stuff. Most of the US diet is industrialized and processed. And of course cigarettes are regulated but obviously that's perhaps the worst of all.

I agree with you that the gov should not be using tax money to take care of people who suffer ill-health from their life style decisions. But if so, why is it okay for tax money instead be used to take care of people who consume the myriads of other **regulated** foods?

Truth is, if Americans stopped trusting the FDA as an authority about what they should and should not eat then everyone would be better off and the health industry would have a lot less to do.

I would be willing to bet that the average raw milk consumer is far healthier than the average American, not necessarily for consuming raw milk, but because they are probably aware of all of this and have very high quality diets.

We can’t save everyone... doesn’t mean you can’t regulate the stupid.

Like I said earlier, I personally don’t give two shits if 2 million millennials die from eating Tide Laundry Pods as a challenge... as long as no person smart enough NOT to eat them is victimized one PENNY.

We need more stupid and weak to die... we’ve been circumvententing Mother Nature’s natural selection, by trying to save all of the stupid, slow and weak for far to long.

* Child Seats * Fire retardant clothing * Batting helmets * Cancer warnings

We will someday suffer nature’s wrath for our compassions. He or she dumb enough to drink milk with cow shit mixed in, deserves to be removed from the gene pool.

Yeah! Good point!

And, what was it -- two illegal children died at the border? In how many years?

Pffft! Call me when it's 2,000. Right?

I was shocked when I found out that wheat was sprayed with glyphosate to "ripen" it. It was sprayed to kill the plant and so the harvest could be planned to the day instead of waiting. Now how do you think that gets "washed off" before going into breads and flour? Answer is, it does not and cannot be removed. We are ingesting it.

THIS IS A TAG LINE...Exercising rights is only radical to two people, Tyrants and Slaves. Which are YOU? Our ignorance has driven us into slavery and we do not recognize it.
