President Donald Trump is out of options, according to Richard Painter, the former chief ethics attorney for President George W. Bush. “It’s quite clear his goose is cooked here,” he said Wednesday on MSNBC. He said Trump has just one way out to protect himself and his family: a comprehensive plea deal to federal and state charges in exchange for his resignation. “Donald Trump is in serious trouble. His lawyers ought to be telling him to negotiate a plea deal,” Painter said. “Get him out of the White House. Have him resign, plead guilty to lower charges and let’s move on as a country.” Poster Comment: Maybe he'll do it before the Democrats settle in on January 3rd...... The republican brand won't survive all the investigations that will dominate the 116th Congress....

It's only sailed because Republicans, even Trump, do not seem to know how to fight. They seem to be afraid of fighting. Democrats are not. One thing I observed in years of litigation was that the when you had a party whom you knew would always settle, whom you knew was afraid of going into court, of fighting toe to toe in front of a jury and possibly fail (but also possibly win) - when you faced opponents like that, you went after them hammer and tongs, you went for the jugular, you went for blood, and you could generally extract settlements out of them four, five, six, ten times what any jury was ever really likely to award. When people are afraid to fight and you know it, and you're willing to fight and they know it, you always win. They always back down, back away, "turn the other cheek", submit. And you take them to the cleaners. The Presidency has so much power, and the Congress and even the Courts have so little direct enforcement power, that it amazes me that Nixon resigned. He was a wimp. It amazes me that Trump has let what is happening to him go on and on and on. He has had the power to stop a great deal of the nonsense all along. Sure, he'd have to go dark and vicious like the Clintons, like LBJ, like the Obamas. SO WHAT? Politics is a dirty business. And his enemies are coming out of the woodwork with everything they have. The failure to public crush a few like bugs meant they are not deterred. Now they are more brazen. In business, there is a financial goal at the end of the parley and the games, but in politics, the ultimate goal is power itself, the power to command, to impose your will and compel money and labor to be spent on what YOU, the leader, commands, and NOT on what your opponents command. Trump has been bluff and shot some zingers, but he has not fought very hard against the attackers at all. This has been a mistake. I hope Trump changes his path, or he will be neutered by his aggressive foes, and a one term President, to be succeeded by Democrat rule.
I don't really care for labels, I find them divisive and counter-productive. I'm not now, nor have I ever been a member of the Democrat Party. I was a member of the Republican party once, but I severed that relationship some years ago. I prefer ideas to ideology and an open mind to the limitations of being part of a rigidly defined "group". If this fits your definition of "independent" I'm good with that.
