December 11, 2018 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A group of archeologists and other scientists say they have discovered strong evidence that the region of the “Middle Ghor,” where the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are believed to have existed, were in fact destroyed by a meteor that exploded in the sky above, raining down superheated matter and raising temperatures to thousands of degrees, a theory that matches the account of the cities’ destruction contained in the Old Testament Book of Genesis.

According to the theory, the meteor exploded at low altitude with the force of a ten megaton atomic bomb at an altitude of about one kilometer over the northeast corner of the Dead Sea, and obliterated all of civilization in the 25-kilometer-wide circular plain that constitutes the “Middle Ghor.”

The researchers presented preliminary findings on the subject at this year’s annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research in November, and have been developing the theory since at least 2015. They state that the evidence from radiocarbon dating indicates that a group of civilizations flourished in the area for over two millennia, until approximately 1700 BC, when the mud-brick walls of the buildings in the region simultaneously disappeared and only the stone foundations remained.

At the same time, the pottery in the settlements was heated into glass in the space of milliseconds, according to the results of an analysis of the Zircon crystals formed in the process, indicating that they were briefly exposed to temperatures of approximately 4000 to 12000 degrees Celsius, comparable to the temperature of the surface of the sun.

The explosion rained down platinum as well as molten lava on the region, according to two of the archeologists, and this further confirms that a meteor was the source, given that platinum is found in higher concentrations in meteors than on earth.

Approximately 40,000 to 60,000 people living in the region were killed, and a 500-square kilometer area was rendered uninhabitable for 600 to 700 years, the researchers estimate. They believe that the area was stripped of its topsoil, and that salts from the nearby Dead Sea were spread over the land, destroying its fertility.

The settlements that were annihilated in the event include the principal excavation site, “Tall el-Hammam,” which the archeologists believe is the city of Sodom, whose destruction is recounted in the Book of Genesis, chapter 19. The approximate date of the annihilation also matches the time period corresponding to the event in Genesis, according to archeologists.

The research has been carried out by the Tall el-Hammam Excavation Project (TeHEP) by a team of scientists from various universities and scientific institutes, including New Mexico Tech, Northern Arizona University, North Carolina State University, Elizabeth City (NC) State University, DePaul University, Trinity Southwest University, and Los Alamos National Laboratories.

Close correlation with the Book of Genesis, chapter 19 Two archeologists involved in the Tall el-Hammam Excavation Project, Steven Collins and Phillip Silvia, wrote in a 2015 conference paper that “the physical evidence from Tall el-Hammam and neighboring sites exhibit signs of a highly destructive concussive and thermal event that one might expect from what is described in Genesis 19.”

“The soil/ash samples gathered from Tall el-Hammam contain evidence of top- soil destruction and sub-soil contamination with Dead Sea salts that would have prevented the cultivation of crops for many centuries following the event, which explains (in part, at least) the long occupational hiatus,” they add.

According to the ninth chapter of the Book of Genesis, verse 24, “The Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven,” a statement that matches well the high temperatures and superheated stones that would have rained from the sky in such an event.

The Hebrew word for “brimstone” is normally applied to sulfur, which is a stone that burns.

Genesis 19 also seems to describe the general devastation in the region, including the loss of plant life discovered by the archeologists, stating in verse 25, “And he destroyed these cities, and all the country about, all the inhabitants of the cities, and all things that spring from the earth.”

“The country about” is the Hebrew word “hakkikkar,” which refers to a plain seated between mountains, or a valley. Archeologists believe this area to be the Middle Ghor.

Genesis adds that Abraham “looked towards Sodom and Gomorrah, and the whole land of that country: and he saw the ashes rise up from the earth as the smoke of a furnace.”

Genesis and other books of the Bible state that Sodom was destroyed in retribution for the sexual perversion of the inhabitants, particularly their desire for sexual relations with the same sex, which the Scripture calls an “abomination.”

The New Testament Letter of Jude likens fires that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah to the “eternal fire” of hell.

“Sodom and Gomorrah, and the neighboring cities...having given themselves to fornication, and going after other flesh, were made an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire,” the letter states in chapter one.

Oh yeah? And how do these scientists explain the fact that when Lot's wife looked back, she turned to a pillar of salt? Huh? Huh? Meteors don't do that.

I take it that you are not a believer in God or the Bible. Ok. Correct me if I am mistaken.

When cataclysmic events happen and people don't understand why, which certainly happened in abundance during early civilization (but yes still happens even today) People naturally search for and invent explanations.

For example, the story of the great flood could have been a cataclysmic flooding of the Black Sea. That's not the whole world but would certainly seemed like it for the people there, and survivors could reasonably have invented the story of Noah, citing the reason for it as God's anger with humanity. It's even possible, and perhaps even likely that some survived that flood with their livestock by use of rafts or boats.

Legends are born this way, and the biblical Noah could reasonably be a derivation of that actual historic event, though embellished to include divine reasons for the flood and the inclusion of every animal on earth.

In the same way, perhaps there was indeed a meteor blast in the region which had effects as described. The biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah could have been invented after the fact, with, again, a divine explanation of anger over sexual deviancy ascribed to the the event as the cause. (Something which may or may not have had any truth to it).

No it says worldwide flood. Do you think a black sea flood would last for 40 days and nights. No it wouldn't.

Yes people to look for explanations. That is how they came up with the bizarre disproved theory of evolution.

You have to think Jesus is a liar to not believe in the flood. Or someone would have to believe that Jesus didn't say what the Bible says he said about the flood.

No it says worldwide flood. Do you think a black sea flood would last for 40 days and nights. No it wouldn't.

I didn't suggest that every detail mentioned in the bible must have a factual origin. Only that the general story of Noah could have a factual origin. What suggest is that a flooding of the Black Sea provided that inspiration for the story, and that details such as it covering the whole planet could have reasonably been added even without being factually true.

Yes people to look for explanations. That is how they came up with the bizarre disproved theory of evolution.

Indeed, the idea of evolution -- before it was a formal theory -- was no doubt inspired by someone's (Darwin's) search for the explanation of the origin of life.

You have to think Jesus is a liar to not believe in the flood. Or someone would have to believe that Jesus didn't say what the Bible says he said about the flood.

The first part isn't true. If I told someone you said something and someone didn't believe it as untrue, it could EITHER be because you said something untrue, OR I misreported what you said. Since Jesus is not walking the earth today and all we know about him is what's recorded in the Bible, one might simply question the Biblical accuracy of what he said without suggesting Jesus was a liar.

Maybe a man called Jesus really did walk the earth doing miracles and speaking great wisdom long ago. If so, and the bible misrecords what actually happened and what he actually said, then not believing the bible would not infer the the man ever lied.

To cast a doubter's perspective of unbelief as calling Jesus a liar is not necessarily accurate, and serves more to disenfranchise you, if you are trying to convince them the bible is accurate. So you should be moer mindful of the second possibility you cited, which will in fact be the case 99.9% of the time you talk to people.

I do consider myself open-minded. I did watch about half of the other video but find the idea that Pangea split the continents apart to their present distances in mere months or so during the flood far short of credible.

For people who believe the earth is a mere 6000 years old, I would ask them why the earth & universe must be far younger than it is large. That is, if the universe is so incomprehensibly large, why can it not be just as incomprehensibly old?

Under the Newton model, as I term it, the universe and earth can be many billions of years old, evolution can be the means by which life progresses, we can be descended from apes, and yet at the same time, God can exist and we can be children of His, with spiritual immortality. And it doesn't matter if our academic knowledge about theology is correct or not. If God would not condemn someone for all eternity because they did not understand physics, why would he do so for their not understanding theology?

Everything works even better than it does under the Christian model. There is full spiritual accountability, endless patience. Complete free will. Life is fair no matter what happens. Seriously, if God had a choice of how spiritual law works I can't imagine how or why he would have chosen the biblical version of things seeing how most all of his kids would end up being cast into a lake of fire. In all seriousness, it doesn't make sense.

I seldom engage folks on matters of "god"

Everyone has their own "self" to reconcile with whatever they decide to believe.

We can all find a way to defend whatever we wish, if we try hard enough and are willing to justify our behavior.

the Newton model, as I term it,

I am interested in your "Newton Model" I would like to explore further what it suggests....

At 30 thousand feet, it seems to be a bit similar to my personal creed.

I recommend Dr Newton's book: "Journey of Souls".

There are interviews of him on youtube which are easy to find and also interesting.

In a nutshell, our humanity is only a minor part of our identity, contrary to what most major faiths assume. We do not *have* souls. Instead, we *are* souls, which define the greatest part of who and what we are. This in contrast to the assumption by Christianity and other faiths that the soul is simply a left-over afterglow of a human life consisting of merely a consciousness and nothing more. Under the Newton model, the soul defines the greatest part of who and what we are, and is immortal.

What we as souls *have* are human bodies, so that paradigm is flipped on its head. Essentially our human bodies are only rental units that are disposed of at human life's end, after which we return to the spirit world for a respite and then return for another run on earth. According to Newton, who's specialty was past-life and between life regression via hypnosis, reincarnation is a real phenomenon which serves the specific purpose of spiritual growth until we eventually progress to the point where further human incarnations are no longer significantly beneficial.

Soulmates are real, lives are chosen by souls who know in advance the general circumstances of it (male / female, rich / poor, etc) which is why one cannot rightly complain about the circumstances we are born into, no matter how severe. And the harder the circumstances, the stronger the potential for growth.

We do carry memories, including phobias, but also sometimes certain skills from one life to the next, but they are rooted in the sub-conscious level and are unrelated to physical memories contained in the brain, which is why hypnosis is required to access them. It also could explain child prodigies who are exceptionally skilled with things such as piano and golf.

The whole book is available for download here for free. Personally I found it both fascinating and credible on multiple levels, including both theological and scientific, and I also found the presented model to corroborate well my own personal observations in life.
