Cohen appeared in federal court in Manhattan Thursday where he entered a guilty plea for misstatements to Congress in closed-door testimony last year about his contacts with Russians during the presidential campaign. Cohen has now promised to “put family and country first” by cooperating with prosecutors, becoming perhaps the most pivotal public witness against his former boss. Cohen’s earlier plea deal with federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York implicated President Trump in campaign finance felonies. Since then, Cohen has spent more than 70 hours in interviews with Mueller's team. The questioning has focused on contacts with Russians by Trump associates during the campaign, Trump’s business ties to Russia, obstruction of justice and talk of possible pardons. “The potential significance of Cohen’s cooperation is immense, for most high- powered business people with complex business interests, having one’s personal attorney become a star witness for the prosecution is the worst possible legal nightmare."” said Kendall Coffey, a former United States Attorney in Florida. November 30, 2018 NPR falsely claimed that Donald Trump Jr.’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2017 conflicted with an account given by a former attorney for President Donald Trump. Here is NPR’s false write-up of that testimony: ‘But not in 2015 or 2016?’ Trump Jr. was asked. ‘Certainly not ’16,’ he said. ‘There was never a definitive end to it. It just died of deal fatigue.’ Trump’s account contrasts with the new version of events given by Cohen on Thursday in a guilty plea in federal court. In that new version, Cohen says the discussions with at least one Russian government official and others in Moscow continued through June 2016, well into Trump’s presidential campaign. In fact, Senate investigators were asking Trump Jr. about a series of efforts to develop property in Russia, going back several years. Dershowitz: I think the weakness of Mueller's substantive findings are suggested by the fact that he has to resort to false statement prosecutions. Which really shows that he didn't start with very much, that the very fact that he is conducting an investigation has created these crimes. These are not crimes that have been committed prior to his appointment. They are crimes that were committed as a result of his appointment, and that raises some questions about the role of special prosecutors in creating crimes, or creating opportunities for crimes to be committed. In the end, I don't think Muellere is going to come up with very much in terms of criminal conduct that existed before he was appointed, that is quite shocking.
“The problem is Mueller is straying away from his mandate to find crime, and he is now looking for political sin,” Dershowitz said to Hannity. “Building buildings in Moscow, using stolen material from [Julian] Assange — these are not crimes. He has no authority to be a roving commissioner to find political sins.
