Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson take heat on remarks

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and televangelist Pat Robertson are being scolded for their comments in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake in Haiti that has killed tens of thousands, according to early estimates.

Critics from both the left and right are denouncing their remarks as insensitive to the disaster and attempts to score political points off human tragedy.

Speaking on his radio show Wednesday, Limbaugh said the earthquake has played into Obama’s hands, allowing the president to look “compassionate” and “humanitarian” while at the same time bolstering his standing in both the “light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country.”

He added: “We've already donated to Haiti. It’s called the U.S. income tax.”

Limbaugh’s comments were, in part, a riff on Sen. Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) much publicized remark in a new book that Obama was able to win the election because he is “light-skinned” and lacks a “Negro dialect.”

But regardless of the intended context, Limbaugh’s comments have been widely panned.

“They are deeply insensitive,” said conservative commentator Pat Buchanan on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“The president speaks for the country when he says we’re going to go in there,” he said. “You want your whole nation, and it’s very positive. And I think Rush’s comments were cynical.”

Sitting next to Buchanan on set, host Joe Scarborough called Limbaugh’s comments “deplorable.”

“The insensitivity is stunning,” said the former Republican congressman.

Liberal commentators also quickly jumped on Limbaugh.

“Limbaugh did not know when to just shut up,” said liberal commentator Keith Olbermann on his MSNBC show “Countdown.” “Today he blamed communism for the poverty of Haiti, blamed President Obama for holding a news conference the day after this cataclysm when he did not hold one after the failed half-assed terror attempt in Detroit.”

John Amato from the left-leaning website Crooks and Liars added that “with thousands of people dead already and as the suffering continues in Haiti, Limbaugh and his ilk only care about one thing: destroying Obama.”

The conservative media watchdog site Newsbusters stepped up to defend Limbaugh, saying his comments were not put in proper context, but very few others are backing the conservative firebrand’s latest controversial remarks.

There are those in the world who hate us ...

The question that you need to ask - and I know that you are honest and I trust your answer - are any of them justified?

Of course they are ... and after four short years of Obama ... the question you need to ask, is: Will there be any improvement?

The problem that you cite are minor...you say Black Panthers...I say Blackwater...where is their accountability? Haliburton PROFITING off of war...do you know what war profits used to be called?

A felony...

Your outrage, as justified as you believe it to be, is disproportional to your lack of outrage over other more egregious issues...

Sure US Dollars will be used to rebuild Haiti, and that is the way it should be … through CONTROLLED and ACCOUNTABLE methods … what will the effect for the effort be. Where will Haiti be one year from now? Corruption needs to be controlled … the money needs to go to the needy … not to rebuild the palatial estates of the corrupt politicians.

I am remembering something I was reading last December, around Pearl Harbor Day. It was discussing the sate of the US compared to the state of Japan after the war. The US spent I don't even remember how much money rebuilding Japan after the war. There were photos comparing Detroit to Tokyo. I think it's obvious that we have got to stop spending so much money rebuilding other countries while ours lies in shambles. My in-laws (not hubby's parents-it's complicated) are church people - the kids Grandpa is a minister and their grandma is a fine woman with many resources. They go to Haiti every year for several weeks, sometimes a full month, to help the people with food, clothing, whatever they need. They are scheduled to go out there next month and we're already collecting the necessary supplies to send with them. It is a wonderful thing that they do. Haiti is getting assistance and there are so many giving Americans that Haiti will get what it needs right now without have to spend even more US dollars that the US does not have.

I'm sad for the people of Haiti and we do what we can do, but let's face it. The US Government doesn't have the money to help them. They've already given bailout money to people who didn't need it and that money could've went to haiti - It just doesn't make any sense. US Gov helps the rich and helps the foreignors but does nothing for it's own people. Perhaps we're turning into Mexico much faster than I think. I don't know. That's just my two cents worth. Carry on.

We moved off topic … back to Rush …

Rush Limbaugh expounded on his comments today during a phone comment to a caller named "April". He said today he does not discourage donations to Haiti: "I did not say do not send donations to Haiti." He said he loves to "tweak" the media.

Right. So, what does the media and the liberal pundits do, they immediately turn that around with: “He didn't say donate to Haiti and he made a long statement that anyone would interpret as "don't donate to Haitian relief."

Anyone would interpret … interpret … Rush said: “I did not say do not send donations to Haiti” … I heard him say that to “April” … and then I read: “He didn't say donate to Haiti and he made a long statement that anyone would interpret as "don't donate to Haitian relief."

Interpret … That just makes me sick …

Both are terrbile ...

You see nothing wrong with a couple of guys in black uniforms (giving the appearance of LEOs) waving nightsticks in front of a predominately white voting area?

How about a couple of guys in Alambam dressed in white sheets doing the same.

Voter intimmidation is against the law ... they violated the law ... they were found guilty and then the case dropped ... do I think this is serious ... Hell, yea, I do!

What was the kid doing that had his arms blown off ... they do not use kids as direct support of their terrorists ... sure they do ... wake up!

It appears that telling the truth has now become a revolutionary act. Why, even Bill O’Reilly said he donates to the Haiti Health fund because this bypasses the government. Rush stated that money to Haiti is siphoned off he never said to not give to the Red Cross. He asked why you would go to whitehouse.gov to give to the RC … and that is a legit question … needing an answer.

I reviewed some material today and saw responses from Media Matters and the Huffington Post.

It is commonly accepted that Media Matters and the Huffington Post must have their demons, one of which is Limbaugh. And they will lie. This is a perfect example of both. I wouldn’t take too seriously a pack of liars who live in Fantasyland … I can’t take too seriously what any Lib says … however hard I try.

This should be right down you alley, war. I have read many of your posts to know this.

What in the Constitution makes it possible for Obama to take tax money and give it away, even in the event of a disaster?

Did not early Americans struggle with this as well?

Those people SHOULD be helped and they MUST be helped.

But I’m all for private donations, not government money … No way … it will just be stolen by the corrupt politicians there.

I see you had to go for now, I will wrap it up with this:

May there be a day when Americans go back to being Americans, then we will see the undo of Obama.

But as long as they are parasites voters who claim to be Americans and want something for nothing …
then Obama will always have voters.

No such thing as Obama voters having any “buyers remorse” … forget about that.

Next election he will promise them “free” anything they want again and once more they will vote for him.

Never ever bet against the stupidity of the idiots that call themselves “Liberals voters.”
