Starbucks to Lay Off 5% of Corporate Workforce

The coffee chain slims down as it aims to respond more quickly to consumer trends

Starbucks has said getting more customers in its doors remains its primary challenge.

Starbucks Corp. SBUX -0.74% is planning to lay off approximately 5% of its global corporate workforce as it seeks to become a more nimble company.

Jan Paul Koch

They are not police friendly and are against lawful CCW: what goes around comes around (a/k/a karma).

Michael Hall

Hold on a minute. These people were asking for a dollar to "save the world" a few years ago. Now they are laying people off? I mean you cant save your own staff but you are going to save the world? Right. Loopy, liberal, coffee thats awful.

Steven Mcdonald

Starbucks pulled open the door for competition, and propped it open with the significant decline in the quality of the store experience.

And I am not referencing the associates, who continue to be the best in the industry.

SBUX stores are terrible, smelly, dirty places where people come to hang out without any intent of buying anything. Most of what goes out of the stores in SF is the stuff that is stolen, on a daily and hourly basis.

In their attempt to help the homeless, support liberals and stand for almost nothing hard to stand for - they have become what they wanted - nothing.

Peet's is already way ahead, and there are others closing the gap quickly. SBUX needs new leadership - maybe even a DNA transplant.

Sell now, they are too stubborn to change.

Starbucks coffee tastes burnt to me. I don't like like it.

I don't care what their causes are or aren't. The Church could operate a coffee shop that went to the holiest of purposes. I still wouldn't go there if the coffee sucked. Sell me a product I like, and I'll buy it even if I don't care for your politics. Dunkin' Donuts has good coffee, so I buy it. Havana Club rum is made in Communist Cuba by the government. It's good. I'll buy it.

Taken over by Communists because the preceding right wing military dictatorship did not ensure that the people had jobs, housing and enough to eat. Some were very rich, some were literally in rags and starving. Under the Communists everybody has a job, a house and enough to eat. Under the right wing government that preceded it, there was neither education nor health care for the poor. Today, there is, and everybody in Cuba can read and write, and they have longer life expectancies than Americans.

The same thing was true in China. And in Vietnam. And in Russia, before their revolution.

People do not natively and instinctively want to be Communist. They want to be left alone, and to be able to rise in the world. But there is a basic level of security that is required for survival, and when traditional states allow the wealthy to progress to great wealth, leaving everybody else not just behind, but a substantial portion of the people literally ignorant, in rags and without food, people rebel to survive. They rebel, and they win too, because there are always more poor people in all such systems than rich ones.

Cuba could have avoided a Communist revolution and instead been like any other Western country. The rich and the better off would have had to agree, of their own volition, to redistribute SOME of their wealth downward, to feed, house, educate and medically care for everybody. That's not a small cost but a heavy one. The alternative is what happened.

This is what FDR understood, but the American Right does not. If you don't want Communism or National Socialism, you have to have democratic social welfare - HAVE TO. Modern industrial society has too many people concentrated in cities, where the effects of poverty and downturns and joblessness are too dire, too fast. Private wealth will not react fast enough to crises. Or rather, it could, but it won't, because in crisis private wealth is protecting itself, as is only natural. The state has to do it. When the state does it intelligently, as in Western Europe, the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, etc., you still have regulated free market capitalism and the opportunity to make great wealth, but everybody can read, nobody starves or dies in the street for want of care.

If you don't want Cuba, or China, or Russia, or Vietnam, or the Third Reich or Mussolini's Italy or Franco's Spain, you have to strike the balance that FDR struck. To avoid national socialism or communism you must have social welfare. All history has shown this.

The Right, particularly the American Right, stubbornly refuse to accept this. They have rejected that reality since 1932. Which is why they have never had real power since 1932, and can never advance their agenda other than at the cranky margins - generaily by cutting taxes but not services, so the deficit explodes, and then, like clockwork, about 6 years later the market collapses and people return the Left to power.

To avoid that, the Right has to sign onto the New Deal. That's the bottom line. Eisenhower did, and his was the greatest Presidency of the post-war era.

North Korea is an oppressive shithole.

Connecticut is appealing to me. So is Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and Michigan. Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, Iowa. These places are appealing.

Also France, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Austria, Luxembourg, Canada - very appealing.

Places with strong social welfare states and strong personal liberties: that is what appeals to me.

Places where things become weirdly leftist, like California - this does not appeal to me. Nor do places where people love the smack of police authority. Those are unappealing places also.

In other words, the places with the healthiest, smartest, longest-lived and most economically successful people in the world appeal to me. And I notice that all of them are social welfare states. They are not Communist, nor socialist paradises where everything is owned by the state. In fact, most of them are quite traditional: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Canada - half of my list of countries are constitutional monarchies with official established state religions!

The American states are places that are socially liberal - social liberalism means that people are free to be left alone. I approve of that - especially given that the American Right are such judgmental oppressive bastards - you can't even talk to these assholes with them swearing at you.

They are also the best educated people. I appreciate education, it makes for more creative and forward-looking people.

North Korea is a disgusting horror show. I'll take Connecticut, thanks.

You have said abortion is necessary without welfare. Jesus never said something so dumb.

Jesus taught from the Bible. You have in fact said that the Bible is not Gods word. You say you only believe the words attributed to Jesus. Jesus quoted from scripture and said it is all profitable. He said it is the word of God. You disagree. That is the spirit of antichrist. Since Christ used scripture that you dont think is gods word. That means you think CHrist is a liar.

I said faggot loving church. Because there are hundreds of articles about faggot stuff in the catholic church. THe pope even promotes these people. So that is accurate also.

Back to abortion. You did say it is necessary if no welfare. That is why you said you would vote for mass abortion activist Hillary Clinton instead of Cruz. Probably because Hillary supports your welfare theft scheme and Cruz doesn't. Meaning you are more pro abortion then anti thief.

You guys on the Right are one-note charlies. You have a certain approach to religion, which very much sounds like the Taliban. You hate my religion, and I think yours is a complete joke.

So, we can't talk about religion, because we each hold the other's in utter contempt. You think mine is full of Satan worshippers, and I think yours is full of mouth-breathing morons.

Obviously there is no common ground on religion.

So where IS there common ground, then? On economics? No. What, then?

On guns? Gun rights is one of those subjects I don't care about either way. So, my support for the Second Amendment, which has always been pretty stalwart, is PURELY a concession made to my political allies, people on the farther- Right, like you. I support a cause you care about because you care about it, and I expect reciprocation.

Funny thing I've noticed over the years from bosses and friends and acquaintances and co-religionists: people on the Left reciprocate. Even in bed. The farther on the Right, the less reciprocation.

You're some damaged people over there. I have had compassion for you, which is more than you deserve because you are so damaged you have damn little for anybody else.

But you know, when you get shit on every day by the same people, over the same things, and there is no reciprocation, it wears thin.

I've listened to you guys scream that I'm not a Christian so many times that I have started to use your vocabulary. You're right, I'm not a Christian, I'm a Catholic. YOU guys are Christians, and your religion is disgusting, hateful, ignorant and opposed to God. OF COURSE you never experience miracles like I have, why would God grant you people miracles? You spit on his people and despise them. You live in fear and misery and spite, just exactly as people who oppose God and are damned ought to live, given a just God.

You are idolators. I want nothing to do with your false religion and your stupid, selfish ideas.

When it comes to abortion, yep, that's too bad. I want to end it, and I speak realistically about what would be required to move enough of the electorate over to the side that would tolerate its ending. But you people farther to the Right are just retards. You have no capacity to negotiate with people, to compromise on anything. That is why you end up poor, marginalized, uneducated and clinging to your false miracles and your fellow ignoramuses in peeling little prayer houses where the pastor, who is better educated than all of you, is frequently fucking the best looking wives.

Whatever. You do you.

Abortion will never be abolished in this country, because you people are too stupid to be able to do anything to make it happen. And you attack people like me when we try to speak of what would be required.

Then we come to economics. You've decided that I'm a Communist, because I support social welfare. Once again, you demonstrate your poor education, and you demonstrate exactly why you people are not only not qualified to lead, but are never, ever allowed to.

According to you, I'm not a Christian. Ok. You have the word. I don't want to be anything like you.

According to you, I'm a Communist, Socialist, thief. Well, whatever you are, politically, I'm not. I thought I wanted to find common ground with people like you.

Now I just despise you. You are insuting, ignorant pricks. You live in relative poverty because you are stupid, and your stupid religion blocks your ability to actually get an education that will get you out of your shitholes. So rot there. I don't care.

The funny thing is that welfare is mostly spent on white "Christians" in rural states. That's where most of it goes. Then it goes to the black "Christians" in urban areas. You want to kill off that aid.

I've always stood there in the breach, but you know, I'm in the highest tax brackets, if you idiots actually succeed in killing off social welfare, I'll get richer and YOU will be the ones in poverty in your old age.

I used to care about you. But I've had enough of you shitheads. Yes, let's kill Social Security and Medicare - they are the most expensive. Or better, let's kill Social Security and Medicare for Republicans and Christians - the people who say they want to live without them. Then you can rely on your chaotic little churches and your Jimmy Swaggarts and Joel Osteens to help you out, because you have "faith" in them.

Go to it. I never considered voting Democrat before. But I have to say, having marinated in Right wing Republicans for all of these years, I find you to be vile people. You swear at me and curse me and call me names. I answer with humor.

You're a bunch of fucking immoral scumbags. I want nothing to do with you. I've come to my senses. I always stood on the same side as you, but really, I'm like a good person waking up in the German Army of 1944 and realizing that, actually, I think FDR's Americans on the other side are right, and my side is wrong and has been all along.

You've managed to do it! You've persuaded me that I am nothing like you, and that I have no reason to CARE any more about people like you. Go die in a hole.

Fifty percent taxes are to high. You seem to think that is to low.

I think that to pay for everything we need to pay for, a gross wealth tax of 2%, which amounts to an income tax rate of between 33 and 40%, plus a sales tax in the 7% range. We are deep in the hole.

But, once we have used the budget surplus to pay down, and eventually off, the national, state and municipal debt, and eliminated the $450 billion in debt interest we are paying, and once we've gotten the poor into health insurance that governs costs (and brought DOWN the overall cost of illness by about 25%), and reorganized the school system to provide more practical and better education with better discipline (reducing the overall burden of crime), that we will be able to reduce taxes to a permanent 25% income tax, 5% sales tax, 1% property tax (also touching securities portfolios), while maintaining about 50% excises on tobacco, alcohol and marijuana, we will be able to run our government on a permanent basis without debt, and will run a small surplus, year on year, which we can put to a rainy day fund, and perhaps even take money out of circulation, halting inflation.

This is all WITHOUT significant military cuts. The Left would gain money by cutting the military. Well, I believe that EVENTUALLY we could do that, but only once China and North Korea, Russia, Cuba and Venezuela, and Iran and the Muslims more generally, are brought within the world system. Bring all of that to a settlement, and the Pax Americana could be maintained on a third of the current cost, allowing us to cut that total tax burden down to the 18% range.

I also believe that, further out, if we get our education and criminal justice systems on the right track, that the actual numbers of poor people will decline precipitously, and the cost of social welfare will decline because of the lessening need for it.

Do that right, and we can probably get down to a 15% flat tax, 5% gross sales tax (on everything), 1% property tax (including securities and "fine art" and other tax dodges), and 50% excises on alcohol, tobacco and pot. I believe that the social welfare problem can actually be FIXED, by and large, in the long term, by educating and disciplining people out of the bad behaviors, and getting them employed in a burgeoning economy. Then the whole burden of the state, writ large, diminishes, and taxes can go down to a permanent level, along with police forces, armed forces, prison costs, welfare payments, food stamps - the whole kit 'n caboodle.

My eyes are focused on what to do to actually FIX the problems, so that we do not have the permanent poverty, the permanent crime, the permanent warfare, and permanently high taxes. I do not believe in socialism for the purpose of socialism. I believe in social welfare for the purpose of rehabilitating a significant portion of society so their kids and grandkids don't NEED social welfare. I believe in military expenditure and diplomatic action sufficient that we settle things and don't NEED as permanent expenditure as massive as it is.

And I think that if we find our budgetary issues and the issues that drive us towards expenditure and debt, once we've fixed ourselves and freed up tons of money that can be kept in people's pockets, that people who are secure will be generous with their time and excess wealth and help the rest of the world.

But as in any other war, the near-term prospects are blood, sweat and tears. You've got to defeat the enemy and end the war because the benefits can then flow.

I don't think that Republicans will ever accept the "for the duration" pain in the present, in part because the rich at the top don't want to give up anything (and, frankly, having poverty at the base of our society keeps their labor costs low, so they have an incentive to not solve the problems), and in part because the middle and working class, like you, don't believe it will ever end.

And THAT'S the part where the Right, acting through the Republicans, has to be disciplined. YOU take over the role of providing social welfare - admit we have to do it, but then do it intelligently, with the goal of preparing people so they don't NEED it anymore, rather than the Democrat goal of providing enough so that people become dependent, and then vote for them forever. The goals of the social welfare I advocate are different: my purpose is to get people off the streets, stabilized, and into education programs that will get them into JOBS, so they don't need welfare anymore. And I believe that the vast majority of the poor who currently collect it COULD be off the rolls IF our economy functioned better and the situation of the poor were not so precarious.

This is where I am coming from, and always will be coming from. I despise the Left because they speak of the poor, but seemed aimed at sealing them into ghettos like chickens on a farm, whom they pay to keep alive, and then who produce voting blocks that let the Democrat grandees, political and billionaire, continue to exploit them and live in grand style. In other words: the Democrat Plantation. It disgusts me.

But if Republicans still want to be on the battlefield at all, they MUST wrestle for the hearts and minds of those people: provide them social welfare, yes, but social welfare that aims at JOBS - even if they're government jobs at the end. Get the lump through the snake and things get better.

That would be useful information if I lived in Borneo and were a monkey hunter. I assume you mean it to be a metaphor for something in politics.

I see it as a metaphor for the working class and middle class Republican voter. Reagan first, then W, then Donald, put the rope on the coconut and the fruit into the coconut. The middle and working class voters grabbed the coconut and vote Republican, and are being pulled along, still voting for people who don't have their best interests at heart.
