Taylor Pugh, also known as Tater Tot, plans to eventually cut his hair and donate it to charity that makes wigs for those with cancer. Last month, Tater Tot's parents received a letter from Floyd Elementary School's principal, threatening to suspend him if his hair wasn't cut. Tater Tot was suspended when his parents ignored the threat. When he returned after his suspension, his hair was longer than before. At that point, school officials decided to put him in an isolated environment, or "modified in-school suspension." Tater Tot's father, Delton Pugh, doesn't think that his child should be punished for something that's not hurting his education. He also said that many males in the district have hair longer than Tater Tot's hair. However, the school district is known for enforcing its dress code, as earlier this year a seventh grader was sent home for wearing black "skinny pants." His parents are now home schooling him. "We expect students ... to adhere to the code of conduct." said Ian Halperin, spokesperson for the Mesquite Independent School District.
