Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., who sits on the committee, said a lawyer for Ramirez told committee staff she would not speak to them about her allegation that Kavanaugh flashed his naked groin in her face during an alcohol-laden party their freshman year. Ramirez made the accusation in a blockbuster Sunday night New Yorker story. “Our counsel repeatedly tried to reach him,” Kennedy said of Ramirez's lawyer. “They finally did reach him, and he said we are not issuing a statement. Well in a normal world! -If- it is perjury or made to a federal official. Statements made to newspapers do not violate perjury laws or 18 USC 1001 on false statements. Statements made to your Congressional Representative, or to your attorney are safe, as are statements forwarded by your Representative. False statements about a nomination made directly to a Senator (Feinstein) with jurisdiction to act upon the nomination may fall within 18 USC 1001. When they say Kavanaugh gave his statement under penalty of felony, this is what they are referring to. It is the law which snagged Martha Stewart for an unsworn false statement to federal agents. A defamatory unsworn statement can certainly get your sued for slander or libel, but usually it is a tort (a civil wrong) and not a crime. The "Ford" letter appears to have been drafted by an attorney with delivery effected by the attorney to Rep. Eshoo. The unredacted copy of the letter, as released by Feinstein, shows no signature of Dr. Ford. It shows her name, by itself, typewritten. To indicate a signature, it should appear "/s/ Christine Blasey". Rep. Eshoo had her staff hand carry the letter to Sen. Feinstein.
