The Miami Herald is endorsing a congressional candidate who claims to have communicated with aliens throughout her life and says extraterrestrials once visited her.

The newspaper on Sunday endorsed Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, who is running as a Republican for Rep. Ileana Carmen Ros-Lehtinen’s (R-Fla.) seat in the Republican primary for Florida’s 27th Congressional District. The newspaper called her “a strong candidate in the race with plausible conservative ideas.”

Rodriguez Aguilera said in a 2009 television interview that she boarded a spaceship occupied by aliens when she was 7.

“I went in. There were some round seats that were there, and some quartz rocks that controlled the ship — not like airplanes,” Rodriguez said in the interview. She said she was visited by three large, blonde beings.

In a separate interview with the Herald last year, she said she joins “the majority of Americans who believe that there must be intelligent life in the billions of planets and galaxies in the universe.”

The newspaper’s editorial board acknowledged in its endorsement that Rodriguez Aguilera “is an unusual candidate,” but agreed with her assessment that her past comments about aliens aren’t an issue in the race.

“Her bona fides as a former elected official, and now a businesswoman who spends time in other countries training women to run for office are solid,” the editorial board wrote.

Having never encountered a biological extraterrestrial, I have no basis in experience to say that they exist. I have only logic to persuade me that they may exist or may not. By my best reasoning, from logic, they do not, at all, anywhere, but I could well be wrong.

This woman claims she was taken aboard a spaceship by aliens. There are several possibilities here

(1) From my own experience with demons, it's possible that she encountered spirits and was deluded by them into believing that she had been taken into their spacecraft - or perhaps they said nothing of the kind to her, but she assumed they were space aliens as opposed to demons. I have not read her report of what happened to her, but this is certainly possible. She would pass repeated lie detector tests.

(2) She was taken into a spacecraft by biological space aliens, and is accurately reporting what happened to her. She would pass repeated lie detector tests.

(3) She is delusional and believes that she was taken into up, but was not really. She would pass a lie detector test because her memories are real of an event that occurred only within her own senses. She would pass repeated lie detector tests.

(4) She was lying when she originally told the story, but has told it so many times that she has come to believe it herself, and to create the mental images and false memories sufficient to pass an initial lie detector test, but on cross examination she would fail later tests.

(5) She was lying when she originally told the story and is still lying and knows it.

So, those are the possibilities: It's true, something truly happened but she misinterpreted the facts of it, it not true but she has come to believe it, or it has always been a fraud and she knows it. Truth. Delusion. Fraud. Those are the possibilities.

Given the very worst case: knowledgable fraud, the question I have is: what harm? It is not exactly a lucrative field, lying about aliens. A person takes a hit to her reputation for that. She might not win the election. If she wins the election and takes office, knowledgeable of the fraud, how would she be any different from any other politician? They all lie to obtain office. And in office they lie to keep it. A lie about aliens seems inert and harmless compared to the usual lies of politicians about law, money and regulations.

It doesn't make any difference to me, this aliens business. If we are going to hold poilitical candidates to a standard of pure honesty, no incumbents would be re-elected. And she MAY be telling the truth - how do I know? Nobody KNOWS. People can only surmise.

The existence or non-existence of aliens has no bearing on politics, so her real belief or faked belief in them really is irrelevant, to me.
