PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was shot and wounded and one of his friends was killed Wednesday in an attempted robbery, officials said. Officer Martin Campbell was wounded in the leg, WPVI-TV reported. He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was in serious condition.
A man resembling one suspect was shot in the same neighborhood three hours later in a confrontation with police and taken to the same hospital, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. His companion was arrested.
Investigators said Campbell and two friends were walking along a street in the Hunting Park neighborhood when they were approached by two men, at least one of them armed with a handgun. Lt. Frank Vanore, a police spokesman, said the gunman fired first at Campbell, hitting him in the leg, and then let off a second shot, which struck one of his friends in the head.
Both of the men fled on foot after the shooting.
Vanore said Campbell had a gun but did not use it.
Family members said the dead man was Rasheen Allen, an old friend of Campbell, the Inquirer said.
