Once any person that has been relieved of duty of their former post, they maintain the security clearance for five years unless otherwise found to be incapable of responsible action. Once they have been relieved of a former duty, they can not have capability for renewed information unless a new duty post has provided a "need to know." And it takes administrative time to pull a security clearance. But no one is entitled to access to any level of classified material just beause he has a certain clearance. A clearance only makes one eligible to received an access authorization from the custodian of record for the information. An access authorization may be given up to the highest level for which one holds a security clearance, and a need to know. They should be talking about pulling access authorizations which can be done same day. The main thing, and a most important thing, you omitted is once you leave your job, you automatically lose your access to classified information. You are correct in that you do not automatically lose your security clearance. It may remain current if no incidents or flags are placed in your file. I don’t know where you got the five years from. You have two years to find yourself another cleared position, assuming that your background investigation hasn’t expired. What Trump is doing is mainly symbolic....it’s a “backhand to the face”. And a much needed one at that. But the lack of a security clearance will definitely affect their future employment potential. They will need to go through the lengthy process all over again. He is still actively receiving a paycheck and federal employee benefits working as the United States Deputy Attorney General in the Justice Department. Rosenstein has a clearance and an access authorization, and he signed off on that ridiculous FISA Warrant application. There is plentiful reason to pull his access authorization.
