The thing that perplexes me is that it is obvious the ball first the ground in foul territory. Shouldn't that had made the play dead?

Okay I found this:

INFIELD GROUND BALLS

Ground balls that bound between home and first, or home and third are a little tricky. The ball is not ruled fair or foul, until the ball comes to a stop, is touched by a fielder, or goes past first or third base.

The ball may zig-zag, back-and-forth, between fair and foul ground an unlimited number of times. The ruling of fair or foul is not made until the ball finally comes to a stop, or is touched, or goes past first or third base.

I don't think I've ever seen an infield ball go foul and then come back fair without it being touched. That's why I wasn't even aware of the rule.

The ball must have hit first in fair territory before going foul and then back in again,.

I've seen that happen with bunts down the line where they go fair then foul then fair again.

Did you see the Reds score 7 in the top of the 9th to beat Cleveland 7-4 last night??

No. Had to hurt. But at least it wasn't by a single run. Houston has been winning by every imaginable way. It's the one team I despise (even more than the Sawx.)

I can't watch any highlights after a bad Yankee loss. Like last night to the pathetic O's.

Blasphemy!

I have always been a Houston fan, even when they were terrible back way back into their NL days.

It's mostly because I grew up in Louisisana and that was the closest team around.

Cleveland's starting rotation is very good the pen sux and needs to be upgraded if they plan to go anywhere in the playoffs.

Reds started the season horribly 3-18 and fired the head coach, they have turned it around since they hired Riggleman as the interim manager. They are about 10-12 games over .500 since he took over. They have a lot of young players some of them are excelling at the plate and the starters are slowly learning what it means to be a major league pitcher. They could be a playoff contending team next year if things go right and they bolster the pen during the winter. Am planning to attend a late season game or 2 when the weather cools off and they call up some of the minor league players, Nick Senzel being one of them. But if they trade Scooter Gennett before the trade deadline for a starter I will get a chance to see him sooner since he will be Gennett's replacement. Right now they are losing 11-0 and look like a "A" team even though they beat Cleveland the last 2 nights, typical young team good one night sux the next.

That's pretty easy when the organization has only had one really good player in franchise history

It appears Cleveland is getting some revenge. They are up 17-0 in the 4th.

It ended up being 19-4 and doesn't surprise me cause every team gets blown out a couple of times a year. The Reds young pitching staff caused this to happen but that's all part of the learning process. Go home drink a beer or 2 go to sleep and wake up refreshed and have no recollection of what happened last night other than what pitches you don't want to throw again. lol A short memory is key to the learning process, dwelling on how embarrassed you feel will only hold you back.

No. Had to hurt. But at least it wasn't by a single run.

Two years ago the Rangers won almost 40 games by one run and ended up making the playoffs, now they lose by 4 or more and are rebuilding (emptied out the farm system for pitching that got them nowhere)... lol A few years ago that was the Astros M.O. cause they were a young team, now they've grown up some and know how to win the close ones on a regular basis. If they are smart and don't empty the farm system trying to win it all now they will be a team to be reckoned with for awhile. If they are dumb 3 years from now they'll be rebuilding again.

Well the mind does gather cobwebs over the years, so I'll recall this the best I can.

I remember a game in 1989 when the Reds scored 16 runs in the first inning against the Astros. The Astros were in strong contention at the time. The Reds batted around twice and then some, and the only batter the pitcher could out get was the Reds pitcher. Even he got a hit the second time around.

The pitcher (I don't recall who it was) didn't seem to be throwing bad pitches, but the batters were hitting everything "where they ain't."

It didn't matter. The Astros faded badly down the stretch as they always did at that time.

I don't think I've ever seen an infield ball go foul and then come back fair without it being touched. That's why I wasn't even aware of the rule.

I have coaching Little League baseball. Last season I was standing in the hole of the 1B dugout when my #7 man hit a chopper which went down the 1B lime first in foul territory and then hit the chalk on the second bounce then followed the chalk line towards first slowly. Ump made no call so the kid kept running towards 1B and was safe as the pitcher and first baseman thought it was foul and did not move. Then when the pitcher grabbed the ball and moved towards home to argue with the ump I sent my player to 2B swiping that bag, and when the pitcher turned around throwing towards 2nd (3B coach had our player make a huge turn at second to bait the throw) we sent the kid on third home for the run.

I love "little ball."

I think from that same year, I remember a Reds loss better. This was when Pete Rose was in the thick of his gambling scandal. I was also betting a lot on sports those days. The Reds were playing the Montreal Expos, and there were good odds on betting the Reds. I bet a HUGE sum on them. The Reds were leading 5-1 going into the bottom of the 9th and they sent John Franco out to close the game. I'm thinking, "I've got this won."

So I left that book where the game was on TV, to go to check out possible bets on something else. They had sports tickers going and I looked up and it said, (At Montreal, 3 run HR by Aleu. Current score Cincinnati 5 Montreal 4 , 0 out.) I'm thinking, Oh crap.

So I run back to where the game is on TV, and I see another man is already on base for the Expos. They sacrifice him to second. That was the only out of the inning for the Reds. The next man up was a weak hitter who still managed to slam the ball out of the park.

I guess a lot of other people who must have bet the same way I did muttering because Franco wasn't replaced, "Pete Rose must have bet on the Expos."

Reds lose 19-4

Reds had Thursday off after that pounding by Cleveland they came back last night and beat up St Louis 9-1, looks like Riggleman got them to forget the embarrassment and move on. Highlight of the game defensively was Hamilton climbing the CF wall robbing Matt Carpenter of a HR, his head was over the top of the wall.

https://www.mlb.com/cut4/billy-hamiltons-best-catches-in-2018/c-281771398

Looks like Matt Harvey is slowly but surely getting his act together on the mound and in the clubhouse and is having a positive impact on the team, they were 8-27 when they traded Mesoraco for him. Am curious if they will try to trade him at the deadline or hold onto him? Maybe the better question is will anybody even enquire knowing his history of bad behavior in NY??

Franco was usually pretty reliable late in the game so that was unusual.
