on june 6th there was a massive beach party in the normandy region in france, people coming from everywhere to party and have a good time. there was also a boat show and even an airshow and fireworks with lots of special effects.
Ours might be the very last generation to even care that young...kids...--REAL "heroes" -- stormed these beaches on D-Day and laid it all on the line for future generations. Yes, without ever fully living.
If modern Hollywood did nothing else, at least Spielberg made 'Saving Private Ryan'. The shocking opening beach scene (filmed documentary-style) reminded us of the horror and sacrifice that was made.
'Band of Brothers' was also great (for those who may have missed it, produced by both Spielberg and Tom Hanks.)
My prayers are that the Lord granted mercy in His eyes.

Congrats on your imagination. Seriously a very humorous way to describe the day !!

You are most likely correct. I have instilled the history to my kids, so at least they will remember.
Saving Private Ryan ( Tom Hanks BEST movie ! ) and Band of Brothers are two of my most favorite WWII movies. Although I still place The Longest Day with them ! Great movies !!!

I had the good fortune to serve with some of those men, -- 12_years later, in the summer of '55_the 11th Airborne Division was scheduled to rotate to Germany, so many of the officers and men who had stayed in the army after the war got themselves transferred to the 11th to go along.. -- Germany was a prime duty assignment..
To us young recruits, these guys were old men, but in reality most were still in their early 30's, senior NCO's or mid grade regimental officers.. Although in my company, we had a Pvt Williams, who had a little drinking/fighting problem. -- He also had a CIB, and a Bronze Star, earned in Normandy and Holland.. Good guy, but best avoided when he had a snoot full.
Those were great years for me and I was lucky to spend two years stationed in Munich..

You are indeed fortunate to have met and known such men. I am younger than you, and did not get to serve with such men. I did however have the honor to meet WWII vets, friends of my father. They told me many stories that I will never forget. They did not tell the stories in a braggadocios way. But they told it in a historical way. Some were funny, some were sad, and some were downright heart breaking. I am glad I got to meet such men, and to have received their history lessons. I will always hold those men in very high regard.
Also, two guys I went to school with, their father landed at Normandy. Met their mother in France and brought her home. She was fascinating. She and their father told some stories I will never forget. She truely hated the Nazis, was a part of the underground from her early teens. Very fine lady !!
I have tried to instill in my children what those of that generation did for us, to learn the lessons of that time, and to honor their memories !!!

One of my mother's cousins was a MP in Berlin after the war,and met a young German Jewish woman who lost her whole family in the war,as well as all the family property. She was living in a displaced persons camp where he worked when he met her,and they got married. When his enlistment was up they both moved back to the US,hoping to live a peaceful lower middle-class life because he had no real education or job skills.
Then in the mid-50's or so,the titles to her family property in Berlin and other areas in Western Germany were given to her as the sole-surviving member of her family. I think he was surprised to discover he had married a woman who had several million dollars worth of property in 1950's dollars. She sold every single bit of it through a lawyer without even going there to look at it. She had all of Germany she wanted.
They ended up owning race horses and traveling the circuit for the rest of their lives. She had been operated on while in "the camp" and couldn't have children,so they really didn't have any reason to try to be thrifty.
Very nice woman,but very quiet.
In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.
We should all remember what occurred 74 years ago, today !! 6 June, 1944
Put down your I-Pads and remember all the young Americans that on that day, had their lives and future hopes & dreams extinguished !! Pray for them !!

A great thread. Yes we should indeed commemorate the day that we and 3 other nations unleashed 200 million horses on the antiChrist and the third of the Earth aligned with him (i.e., the 6th trumpet prophecy). my Dad served in that war and many of his friends. May God bless them.
And for what its worth, I served in the Viet Nam War (which we would have won if we had staged a D-Day type of invasion of North Viet Nams' atheist bastards). But very few of our leaders today, except for Trump, have any balls.
My prayers are that the Lord granted mercy in His eyes.
The real mercy was granted by Hitler and Rommel. Hitler believed the invasion wouuld occue at Calais, not Normandy. Rommel was certain it was to be at Normandy but would not disregard his orders not to move his panzers and troops there. If he had, the allies would have been slaughtered.

From the end of the war, till I enlisted in early '55, we had many family get- togethers, weddings, funerals, etc. --- At one time I had nearly 100 first cousins, most older, from both sides, so I grew up hearing about their war experiences..
Probably the worse was about my cousin Frank, who was in the 8th, shot down over Berlin in late '43, and spent the rest of the war in a PW camp, and got out weighing about 80 pounds.. -- He didn't like to talk about it much..
Why are you so aggressive with tpaine? This poster is AWESOME when he decides post his perspectives. And unlike you he does not "push" a perspective. He demonstrates serious leadership skills by "pulling" a perspective.
Then again, you ------ live in Kookifornia. --- lol
Not really.. I live in the Sierra's of Northern California where we fight against the statists of the left coast.. -- And the idiot right wing statists, - like you...
Well, tpaine, I admire the fact that you (and your family) have defended our great nation, and that you are still kicking at 81. And at 71, I am right behind you.
But let me ask you, in your previous post are you saying (inferring) you are against both the left coast politicians and the rightist politicians at the same time? That's pretty much like trying to walk a tight rope.
I consider myself as a constitutionalist libertarian, opposing leftists of all stripes, and --- Statists of the right.
Right-wing statists are authoritarian, and love big government, just like the progressives....
Well, the word libertarian scares me a little bit, if your talking about Ron Paul (who lives down the street from me and I sometimes campaigned with him in local races but not for President). But I definitely don't like leftists of any stripe, and I will have to think about "right-wing statists." Not real sure what you mean by that.

Statism, and Statists, are an old political division.. --- They are people who love State, local, and fed governments, the bigger the better..
To modern day eyes, most of the founders would be considered the libertarians of their day. -- Their primary goal was to have freedom for the individual..

Well I will have to along with the idea of limited government to some extent. According to the Bible, the only purpose of a king (or President whatever) is to defend and protect the Church (as with the King and Queen of England, even to this day). For the President to do anything more is wrong (or at least un- Biblical).
My problem with Ron Paul, and most libertarians, is that they dont even want to do that (in the name of keeping taxes low). I for one am not falling for that far out and very dangerous idea. If Ron Paul were to have been elected President, the US would be ruled by ISIS by now, and most Christians would be dead.
