The National Football League has done nothing to recover during the off season from it’s miserable popularity ratings that are now at the lowest ever. Rocked by the issues of players taking a knee during the playing of the National Anthem, overly long games, and scandalous players, just 35 percent say they have a favorable view of “America’s sport.” According to an Economist/YouGov poll taken May 27-29 another 47 percent have an “unfavorable” view of the NFL. What's more, only 15 percent called the NFL a "top interest," and 37 percent said that they are "Not at all interested" in the games. Many teams are already in early training camp and the season kicks off Thursday September 6 when the Atlanta Falcons play the 2018 Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles. The new approval ratings follow a trend that Secrets charted last year in polling provided exclusively by the Winston Group and pollster David Winston. In August of last year, Winston surveys put the approval rating of the NFL at 57 percent. In September, it had dropped to 44 percent favorable. YouGov’s poll did find support for the new NFL policy on taking a knee. Under that rule, players who protest will be fined, though they can now stay in the locker room instead. However, the public is still evenly split on the issue overall.

I'll stick with college football on occasion. More exciting sport IMO with more human error makes it interesting to me.

I think a lot of NFL fans have dropped out of the club and are going back to college football. What the drop in NFL popularity means is a tear in the social sports fabric. Whereas you had a pervasive following of NFL games, and they were the subject of innumerable casual conversations, social media posts and such, now a certain number of former NFL fans have "dropped out" of the NFL and that means it's no longer a conversation they want to be part of. The biggest hit to the NFL, IMO, is the toll taken on the social ubiquity of the NFL. Major damage, self-inflicted.
You know, it does take quite a bit of time to keep up with the NFL. Lots of people have added up how much time they spent at it (not even counting their fantasy football habit) and talk about what a huge timesuck it was.
The stress of your team losing, and what if they go to the super bowl, screaming at the owner and coaches. Guys running wrong routes and people missing blocks. Yep I am much better off and I do not think I will ever watch the game again. In fact I probably will never watch sports again. I do enjoy UFC and some boxing but its lost its shine.
If they really want to regain viewership, and sell more tickets, for more dollars, here is what they should try. Rename it to American Gladiators. Dump the ball. Give each player tire tools, log chains, malachite's, etc. Let them line up on the field and go at it. Last team with guys still standing wins. For the halftime, let Kapperdick out of a cage, and chase him down the field, let both teams beat him with ball bats. Finish him off with a chainsaw or double bit axe. People would pay big bucks to see all that blood, gore, guts dumped on the ground. Sponsors would pay big to televise it. The stadiums would sell a lot of beer. Viewership would go way up. Ticket prices would skyrocket This would certainly add a lot of excitement !! Wadda ya think Fred, would that boost the excitement and human error ? LOL !!!

Well, it is a commitment of literally thousands of hours of your life over a period of years. After decades of being a fan, maybe there are other things to do. I guess I'm saying that you usually get your fill of something after enough years of it. I find I'm just less interested in TV in recent years, even streaming commercial-free stuff. I watch a lot less than I used to and I just don't find even the stuff I do watch very compelling.
The NFL *was* Empire, a Religion, an Institution that wasn't even done growing as it infected and affected all facets of society. UNTIL this One Step Too Far. What the drop in NFL popularity means is a tear in the social sports fabric...A certain number of former NFL fans have "dropped out" of the NFL and that means it's no longer a conversation they want to be part of. The NFL wishes it was just a mere "tear in the social sports fabric" -- this was a fabric that was set ablaze in kerosene. The NFL and their chose stupidly. Long-time NFL fans were totally alienated by the attempting to recruit SJW-BLM sympathy. They overplayed their hand and presumed captive audiences would put up with it. There's no more putting Humpty-Dumpty back together. Don't expect the true extent of damage and alienation to be reported. As to College Football, what's really left to anticipate? Every year, every game, every play is basically the same as the next or previous year. The lack of sportsmanship and hot-dogging has infected College Football to a disturbing degree. And now IT is under the microscope. I believe what's happened in the NFL has gone as far as causing football fans to reassess why they're even watching these games to begin with. IT'S THE SAME OL' SAME OL'. (Only with Hot-Dogging at 11 on a scale of 1-10. NOT a fan.) College coaches had better keep their players in line and tread carefully. Any SJW-BLM displays will seriously dent that audience as well.

By most metrics the NFL "entertainment value" has fallen off a cliff. This IS the sports version of Titanic, except the NFL doesn't realize or accept it. No PR stunt or change in policy will fix this gaping iceberg hole. Why not? Part of the waning interest may be tsunami of Latin players replacing Americans; Rapid turnover of rosters, impeding continuity and familiarity; Astronomical costs to attend games (compared to comfy cable MLB package); Too many pitching changes, loooong games; Too few Day Games and playoff games; watered down competition. Nolu, I believe a YUGE part of the growth and continuity of spectator sports is in passing it down to the next generation OR circles of friends bonding over their "teams". To a substantial degree, MLB has been affected. But the NFL is absolutely demolishing the foundation and nexus of that basis. The NBA is breaking attendance records every year. Yep. Millions of men have re-discovered Sundays by jettisoning NFL games. Blessing in disguise if you ask me. Like the end of good, listenable pop music (the late 1980s), the SJW culture-captains and elites are (purposely) managing to kill another American tradition and mainstay: The NFL.
Lol...I can see you've put some deep consideration to "Stoner-Ball". It'd be considered "too cruel" and "mean" to use Kaepernick by the liberal Tee-Bee execs. So instead, they'd use popular conservatives. The Romans pretty much beat you to the punch with their "Release-The-Lions!" Colosseum "games" back when. Unfortunately had they their druthers, they'd force conservatives to be the subjects of your version "Stoner-Ball". CNN and MSNBC would broadcast a new batch of "Trumpsters" 24/7.
Hank Jr., 2017 Dal@Ariz It just ain't the same. They got Hank Jr. back and even screwed that up. You left out Thursday. They may have given people NFL fatigue. Also, Sunday featured the early game, the late game, and Sunday Night Football. That's more like 10½ hours. And there isn't but about 15 minutes of football in a game of football. Someone, perhaps NFL Sunday Ticket, ran all the plays of a game in a show lasting 30 minutes. The NFL added commercial timeouts and such until games started running to about 4 hours. Then they did rules changes to shorten the games. Basically, they found ways to keep the game clock running and not lose commercial time. To what do you theorize are the reason(s)? Baseball is just too slow for the younger generation. They seem to prefer things like mindless movies proceeding from action scene to action scene. And the older generation had their intelligence insulted by juiced baseballs and juiced players beating the home run records of Maris and Ruth. They probably lost a bunch of viewers, but made quick money, when they moved to pay channels on cable. I am certain that your observation is correct. The NFL is not drawing the younger audience. When kids grow up neither playing nor watching a sport, it tends to not do well. As the older generation dies off, they will not be replaced by a younger generation. I have no idea what the NFL can do to reclaim departed fans, or to stop continued erosion of support. When people leave for a year or two, they have discovered something else to do. That's hard to believe or understand. There's not much difference between the hate-'tudes of NBA and NFL socially or politically. Moreover from what I've seen of the NBA, there's little team work to admire. No sportsmanship. Many of its players are unlikable narcissists and thugs. The kids do not need a big field to play or practice. You do not need too much space to hang a hoop, and the only thing mandatory is a basketball which does not cost much. The NBA is very well suited to TV coverage. While the NBA players may share attitudes with the NFL miscreants, they do not share in-uniform behavior. They do not kneel for the anthem, or hide in their locker room. Commissioner Adam Silver made it quickly clear that such would not be tolerated. It was not an appeal to patriotism but business sense. Anyone could see what was happening to the NFL business. NBA management took full advantage of the situation to attract more business. While football and baseball are faltering, the NBA has set a new all-time attendance record four years in a row. I'm not a major fan of roundball, but have to admire what NBA management has accomplished in recent years. - - - - - - - - - - Observations about elsewhere around the world. In much of the world, the kids grow up playing soccer (football to them). Everything shuts down when the national team plays. It creates a rabid fandom that is passed down through generations. I have never been a fan of ice hockey but it seems rather like soccer on ice with the rules of hockey being similar to the offside rule in soccer. In the UK, everyone grows up throwing darts. It does not cost much for equipment, you can hang a board at home, and compete in leagues just about everywhere. They fill arenas for events like the World Championship, the World Matchplay, and the Premier League. It is a televised sport over there. It is another one of those things passed down through generations.
MLB game is getting boring because a lot of hitters are trying to elevate the ball ⚾️ more to hit HRs. Hitting a HR might be exciting to some fans but it comes with a cost, fewer stolen bases, fewer strategic moves, fewer exciting rallies and batters striking out at astronomical rates with batting averages right about the Mendoza Line. You also have starting pitchers that can barely control one pitch much less the 3 it takes to be an effective starter, consequently they're trying to throw the one they can halfway control thru the catcher, umpire and the backstop.
