Title: IBM: All current encryption methods will be broken "instantly" in 5 years' time

Head of IBM Research, Arvind Krishna, attended a panel discussion in San Francisco last week and shared his thoughts about quantum computing and current ancryption methods. Quantum computing, a concept developed since 1980s, has taken massive leaps forward during the past couple of years, as technologies have advanced. Quantum computing isn't a "holy grail" for all kinds of computer solutions, but it is a technology that is extremely powerful in handling massive, large numbers. The problem? All modern encryption techniques are based on large numbers, namely, large prime numbers.

According to Mr. Krishna, in just five years' time, the quantum computers will be able to break even the strongest, "military-grade" encryptions instantly. This includes the "most secure" versions of AES and more.

Now, luckily, there seems to be a solution. So-called Lattice-based cryptography already exists and is considered to be "quantum-computing- safe". Thus, Mr. Krishna suggests that "if you want to keep your data secret ten years from now, you should change your encryption technology".

This is very speculative. The state of the art in quantum computing is nowhere near this level. In addition, while theory tells us that quantum computing might be good at some parts of decryption, quantum computing by its nature is quite limited in what you can program it to do.

At this point, quantum computing is far more hype than reality. And there is no clear path forward yet. We are still in the infancy of quantum computing as a field.

Yeah. Quantum computers are right there with artificial intelligence and cold fusion. Do you really want a quantum computer?

Me: How much is 2+2?
Quantum Computer: 2+2=4. Probably.

That inspires confidence, huh, especially if you're navigating to Mars?

QC: "It depends on whether you're watching me or not."

I think any major transformations of technology from quantum computing are a decade or more in the future. And it does not have the kind of programming flexibility as a computing device in the same way as a traditional silicon CPU. Quantum computing will be a lot more like computing with GPUs on your high-end video card: insanely fast at certain types of operations but lousy at things like having a traditional CPU instruction set.

The early QC products will be extremely limited hardware, not any kind of general purpose computer.

Well, if the QC gets it wrong, we can always make plans to shut it down. Assuming it can't read lips.

Forbin never knew the danger.

I'm surprised anyone else still recalls that movie. I watched it again, a few years ago.

I was referring to HAL lip reading.

I never saw The Forbin Project. I saw War Games. Close enough?

You should see it. It has aged well. I'm a little surprised that no one has done a remake.
