Hamas militants helped British lawyers secure an arrest warrant against former Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni, it emerged today. The Palestinian terrorist organisation admitted providing information to sympathisers who last month handed the information to Westminster Magistrates Court.
Ms Livni, who was a cabinet minister during the Israeli offensive in Gaza that started last year, was forced to cancel a trip to London last week.
A diplomatic incident was averted only after Ms Livni, now Opposition Leader, was alerted to the warrant and pulled out of a speaking engagement at the last minute.
The incident was a major embarrassment for Gordon Brown, who phoned the Israeli MP last week to offer his apologies.
But the disclosure that Hamas legal experts are briefing pro-Palestinian lawyers investigating alleged war crimes is certain to deepen his embarrassment.
Diya al-Madhun, a judge who heads the Hamas committee, admitted his organisation had helped in the Livni case.
He told the Daily Telegraph: We provide documents, reports and evidence of crimes to all international bodies aiding the Palestinian people in bringing Israeli civilian and military leaders to trial and issuing warrants for their arrest.
